Warcraft Trailer: So What Do You Think?

WarCraft movie logo

The Warcraft trailer was met with great fanfare at BlizzCon 2015. Attendees went wild over the clip, released at the show by Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures. Naturally, a high level of enthusiasm was expected at BlizzCon, as the show if full of ardent Blizzard fans. I’m curious to hear what you think of the trailer. The clip is embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

What do you think of the costumes and special effects? How about the story? Kindly share your feelings (like a Care Bear) on the Warcraft trailer in the comments section. For now, here are some random (and probably silly) observations on the Warcraft trailer (with convenient timestamps!).

00:13 — The eagles from The Lord of the Rings have defected to the world of Warcraft (see what I did there?). Tired of taking orders from senile wizards and providing Uber service to hobbits, the eagles are moving onto bigger and better things in the Warcraft movie.

00:16: Phallic towers are mandatory in fantasy films…but you already knew that.

00:23: There’s your hero, Anduin Lothar played by Travis Fimmel.

00:28: When orcs attack….

00:37: I spy a racist white lord.

00:40: The orc story is explained. See, they’re not bad. Their makeup and CG just makes them look that way. Also, there’s your other hero — Durotan, played by Toby Kebbell.

00:47: You know orcs are badass when they’re completely comfortable with canine creatures that dwarf them.

01:02: Ah, that’s what Paula Patton has been up to since divorcing Robin Thicke. Is it weird that I think she makes a sexy orc?

01:15: The heroes meet! Obviously this is the part where they come to respect and understand one another…which is followed by the part where their people think they’re nuts and the warring continues. I learned this in college in Hackneyed Contrivance Plots 101.

01:24: See, a white man is behind all the trouble.

01:44: Blatant Moses ripoff! *snicker*

01:48: Climactic battle looks climactic.

01:55: Anduin pulls a Legolas.

  1. I don’t like the Lothar look. I also wish they’d have gone with the story from Warcraft 2 if they were going to start before WoW. Durotan is cool but blizzard created a better story in WoD recently. This trailer took me from a must see to a maybe rent. I’m just not interested in Warcraft if there aren’t Death Knights, Paladins, Dragons, and the undead scourge.

      1. I like it in the sense that it looks like a movie I will enjoy making fun of in an MST3K kinda way. As for the content, the starting point makes sense as a launching point. It’s an easy-to-understand plot. If the movie is successful, they can go in more interesting directions.

  2. I know next to nothing about Warcraft, but I couldn’t help thinking about Lord of the Rings the whole time. Good observation about the griffin/eagle thing.

I was curious about the movie before, but now that I’ve watched the trailer, I feel that I have seen the whole movie. So, thank you for saving me $22.00.

Your points seem spot on, including the painfully obvious, hackneyed plot point you mention at 1:15.

I’ll watch this movie when it comes out on Netflix or FX.

  4. I’m really looking forward to watching this movie. I’ve never played the games, although the world of warcraft itself has always been interesting to me. Regardless, this trailer still looked cool enough to pique my interest and I know there is a lot of history to the franchise and stories, which is something that a lot of fantasy movies tend to lack. For example, LoTR has a very complete world and history which translated to the movies and increased their quality. The wave of fantasy movies which followed in an attempt to emulate LoTR’s success had poorly thought out plots and world’s which also affected (negatively) those movies. With as good as this movie looks so far I’m confident that the world and story will be equally good.

  5. I think the LOTR “defections” go beyond the Eagles. Seems like blizzard took a Tolkien fan fiction piece and applied it to the world of warcraft(no pun intended). Maybe I’m unaware of a game that already has but I’m looking forward to a game’s story line having the same fusion of cgi and real actors/plots.
