Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Golden State Warriors’ impressive/surprising winning streak, the 12/12/12 concert for Hurricane Sandy victims, or General David Petraeus being named Barbara Walters most fascinating person of 2012, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
I purposely delayed the “Best Movie” column until I could see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Now that that’s out of the way, I can safely say that The Avengers was my favorite movie of the year. While I understand that some people prefer The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie deviates too much from the comic books that several aspects of it bothered me. The Avengers doesn’t have the ambition of The Dark Knight Rises; it doesn’t try to be a comic-book movie that’s also trying to be a great film. It’s big, loud fun that’s true to the comics.
The fight scenes and special effects were fantastic. Robert Downey, Jr. had some great scene-stealing lines throughout the movie. Scarlett Johansson is always nice to stare at, especially when she’s wearing skintight leather. There were even some mark-out moments, like seeing Hulk transform for the first time or watching the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier take to the skies. The Avengers rocked as a summer blockbuster and totally satisfied my inner comic-book fanboy.
How about you? What was your favorite movie of the year?
It’s not fair for me to form an solid opinion yet. There are still alot I have yet to see that I want to see. Like Argo for example. Les Miserable and Django Unchained aren’t even out yet. Both of them look promising too.
That said, Avengers was stellar. I also really really liked Prometheus and Savages. Trouble with the Curve is one I’m biased toward. Chronicle was done pretty well. I thought 21 Jump Street was hilarious.
I gotta sit this out.
Really anxious for Django Unchained as well. Havent seen Argo yet either, but that should be very good.
My favorites this year, that I have seen, were Cloud Atlas and Taken 2.
This was me again, Im a complete tool.
The Man With Iron Fists was pretty damn cool too.
I haven’t seen either Cloud Atlas or Taken 2 yet. I will for sure though. I heard too many bad things about Cloud Atlas to not give it my own viewing and see for myself. Until it got panned, I had no interest… funny6 how that works.
Lol mystery solved.
Sure it’s fair. Just base it one what you’ve seen. It’s all about YOUR favorite.
I struggle to pick a top favorite with any art as it is. Films are extra tough for me.
Cloud Atlas and Taken 2.
Django Unchained will be there too.
Dont know why this posted as “guest”.
I am waffling between Lincoln and SkyFall. Batman was great and it being superb wasn’t unexpected. I was really blown away by the new Bond movie.
In the end I go with Lincoln. Daniel Day Lewis is great.
Errant question: Can somebody here please recommend me a good headset? I am finding out that I can really only play late at night after the baby is asleep and I have to have the volume way too low. With my horrible hearing, it’s like having the game on mute. I don’t mind using an older headset as long as it’s good and I really don’t want to pay more than $200. I think anything in the 100-range is expensive as it is. Lastly, wire or wireless is not important to me as much as the quality. So, what should I get and why?
On topic: Of the three movies I have seen this year (in the theaters), The Avengers is my favorite, so that’s my “Movie of the Year”. I’m mildly interested in the Hobbit and Skyfall, but I can wait until it hits retail to watch it.

You want a general gaming headset or platform specific?
Well, right now, I only use my Xbox, but I’d (ideally) like it to work for my future PC as well.

This Razer headset should take care of you nicely: http://goo.gl/WJga8
I have a video review of it on the site too.
Thanks a lot. I’ll have to put it on my wishlist, though, since it’s a bit too expensive for me to get right now.
But hey! My wife bought a lottery holiday raffle ticket yesterday so… who knows?

I have this one and it works good if u don’t mind being wired. http://www.amazon.com/Sharkoon-X-Tatic-SP-Gaming-Headset-Linux/dp/B0042PUW2A/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1355800123&sr=1-2&keywords=Sharkoon
Choosing just one movie is hard… I like Argo, Skyfall and looper
I have to agree with Avengers. It was a well paced movie that knew how to change moods at just the right times. Prometheus could have been number one if I had seen it in theaters and had not the ending been spoiled by everyone and their mother.
Dumbledore dies in Prometheus.
Damn, now who am I going to have to do “favors” for to get into Hogwarts?
I hear Professor McGonagall is always looking for teacher’s pets.
And here I was hoping you would say Aurora Sinistra.
