What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures continues to be fun for me. In my head, I know that all the characters are already in the game, but it’s fun imagining that you’re bringing action figures to life through the game’s Portal of Power (which for some reason reminds me of WWE’s Nation of Domination). I definitely want to give The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus  more time…well, the first half anyway. I really liked Shadow, but I loved ICO. Lastly, I think I’ll give X-Men: Destiny a whirl. I know that the game got bad reviews, but I’m a fan of Silicon Knights and want to check out the company’s work.

How about you? What’s on your weekend playlist?

  1. I think I'll finish up Spiderman Shattered Dimensions. The only thing I have left to do is the speed runs through most of the levels for the last few achievements. The game was pretty good, but the voice acting and dialogue was beyond awesome. Any Spider-fan would have a trip with this game. The Deadpool level was especially hilarious. I would recommend the game to anyone familiar with Spiderman just for the witty banter alone. It’s totally worth it.

    1. I played it when it launched. I have to say, I didn't care for it much. I felt it was pretty repetitive, and the banter during the fights repeats so much that it becomes irritable.

      1. I played this game after Arkham Asylum, so believe me when I tell you it was quite a step down. Yeah, I know where you're coming from. Although now that I think about it, what Spider Man game is NOT repetitive and doesn't suffer from poor camera work? For what it is, I think it's a slightly above average game. The thing is that the unique dialogue (not so much the ones that he kept repeating while fighting) was pure Spidey gold. It's what made an otherwise bland action game into a better one. Gems like these:

Deadpool: "CANDY BAR!! GONNA GET A CANDY BAR!!!!!"

Spidey (in Ultimate Carnage level): "I am not losing to a monster made of malevolent spaghetti."

Silver Sable: "If you're smart, Spider-Man, you'll crawl away while you still can."
Spidey: "I'm not smart. In fact, I'll show you just how stupid I am! …Oh, that also sounded much better in my head."

Juggernaut: "Hey, Sable, you're pretty hot for a manly chick."

Spidey: "Now to deliver the coup de grace."
        Juggernaut: "I hate French food!"

        Spidey: "I have a headache."
        Sandman: "I'll kill you!"
Spidey: "No thanks, that'll only make it worse."

Dr. Octopus: "Welcome to the Shadow Division, Spider-Man. The weapons of tomorrow developed today and at the heart of it all my masterpiece. *points* Impressive, isn't it?"
        Spidey: "Meh"
Dr. Octopus: "What do you mean 'meh'?"
Spidey: "I've seen one of these before."
        Dr. Octopus: "No, you haven't!"
Spidey: "I have, I totally have!"
Dr. Octopus: "It's a Condensed Matter Reactor! The only one in existence!"
Spidey: "Is THAT what it is? Ohhhhh, …Meh."

Electro: "I HAVE BECOME A BEING OF PURE ENERGY!!!"
        Spidey: "…WITHOUT PANTS!!!"

C'mon, how can you not at least smile at some of those?

      2. Every one of those made me laugh. Now I have to play this game for those lines alone, not to mention I love Spider-Man. I actually just finished watching the entire 1994 series (couldn't do any of the older ones) which had some fairly good lines as well. Always good for a laugh.

      3. You'll get more out of the game if you are familiar with the four different dimensions. I, for one, am a huge fan of Marvel's Ultimate Universe and I have all of the Ultimate Spiderman graphic novels (with the exception of the Ultimatum event) so I was able to pick up on the references in the Ultimate universe levels. (Deadpool's was the best since he has a few lines that refer to the events that take place in that universe… like the Parker/MJ/Kitty Pryde love triangle).

I used to watch the old 90's Spiderman cartoons when I was younger and I always remember it being more dramatic and somber than it's comic book counterparts. The dialogue of the Amazing and Ultimate Spiderman comics had way more witty banter than the cartoons. In essence, it is Parker's defense mechanism in the same vein of people who can't help laughing at funerals. As far as I can remember, the 90's Spider-man series did a poor job at conveying this essential character trait, which is a shame. Parker's smart-ass mouth is one of the primary reasons I love the character.

      4. A comic book crutches more on good writing than a cartoon. It's half of the comic book whereas with a cartoon, the network can hire any cheap writer to create what the focus groups want and kids are going watch the hell out of it.

Tis the way of the business. The fact that this character was created in the 60's (not to mention Superman and Batman in the late 30's) and is still just as heavily present in pop-culture as it ever was is saying alot. I mean there are characters that have been along longer… but these superheroes have been equally popular generation after generation without interruption since they were created.

The only other characters I can think of from other sources that have the same effect are classic monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc.). Kinda the polar opposite… weird, huh?

    2. I will have to check this out sometime then. It looked decent before, I just haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

  2. All I have left in Arkham City is Challenge Maps. I'll probably be jumping between that and Dead Island.

If anyone wants to jump in Dead Island with me, it's an open invitation.

    1. I only have about 10 of the Riddler trophies left, and they're all physical challenges. My issue is that I can't find a whole lot of melee enemies anymore now that I've beaten the game to get some of the brawling trophies.

      1. Go to either the Courthouse or the Museum. There should be a brawl in there. For other ones, try the subway.

If you haven't done new game + yet, all of your Riddler trophies carry over. So there are LOTS of brawls there.

      2. The goons respawn (I think).

I got all 72 medals in the ranked combat rooms, and now I have almost all of the campaign medals.

I don't think I like the campaigns yet. They totally throw me off my game.

      3. Damn… that sucks.

You still got New Game+… but those flashes to aid you know when to counter cease to exist. You get used to it after a bit, but it's a little more tricky when you have to hit 3 of them.

Iceman taught me the trick to fighting… it's all about those critical hits. There's a tutorial for them in the story of both games, but it's easily dismissed. I can tell by your combat room scores that you've almost grasped it, but your not quite there yet. I was there with AA for about a year. You can complete the stories like that, but there is no way you will get through some of the combat rooms without stepping it up.

You can only land a critical after the third hit of the combo. Then it's about timing as opposed to mashing the punch button occasionally countering. Right after the hit, press the button once. A critical counts as 2 hits in the combo string. My highest combo so far is like 87 hits, but that was in Funhouse Brawl Extreme where you have 2 titan giants and one of those one armed hammer guys.

        The beatdown really helps too.

      4. Yeah, I've used the beatdown along with the freeflow to get up into the 30's with the hit combo counter. But I do much better in the Predator rooms than in the Combat rooms.

    2. I'll rent the game when u hit level 15. It sucks joining someone else who's a higher level or completing missions higher than u because u won't get credit for it.

      1. I think the cap is 50 or 60. I wasn't anywhere near it lol but Im 8 main missions away from finishing it.

    1. I don't want to be too unfair, so I only challenge you to 5280 games of MK.

But for real, be safe and stop anywhere you want. For a music guy like you and me… Memphis is what's up. Don't listen to Sandrock, he lives there and sees the reality of the place, but the history just exudes from the concrete there. It's awesome.

      1. I second that, as soon as you cross that bridge, you can literally feel the difference between Tennessee and Arkansas.

      2. Yeah, when we moved out here, we stopped at the rest stop in Arkansas just over the Mississippi and while I was reliving myself a guy with a black eye and all of 3 teeth started accosting me, asking for a ride. As I was leaving, he was accosting another family outside. I never wanted to get out of a place so much in my life.

On a more humorous note, when you cross into Oklahoma, there's these signs every 5 miles that say "Keep our State Clean!" and have this picture of trash being thrown into a waste basket. The waste basket is shaped like Arkansas.

  3. I'm going to work on starting the SP campaign on BF3 and hopefully wrapping any other black ops things before uncharted 3 next week. I need trade in $$

  4. BF3. Perhaps I'll pick up Arkham City again. I'm stuck right now on a badly designed task and I find it to be annoying! (glide without touching anything detective).

      1. I'll work on it. Thanks. I'd dive, then hit A to glide but would not cover any more distance whilst pulling up. Perhaps a timing issue?:)

      2. Keep holding A… just release the trigger and pull up… wait a second or 2, and do it again.

It does takes some getting used to. It reminds me of the parachute/grapple system from Just Cause 2.

  5. More Pokemon Black for me. Leveling up an Eelektross and Escavalier that have been IV breed and EV trained, hopefully EV training an Axew that has been IV breed and then leveling that up. Also trying to evolve other pokemon that I have for my pokedex.

My hard part right now is not having a second DS and 5th gen game or friends around here with the game; this leaves me unable to Entralink and get enough people in Black City so I can purchase some more evolution stones. As it stands right now I'm completely stuck until I can find some way to Entralink.

I also just started watching The Wire, and I'm halfway through the first season of Walking Dead. It's an ok series, and I can understand why it is popular. It is a very cliche show at times though. The music feels completely unoriginal since I watched 28 Days (Weeks) Later. The plot is about what I expected it to be. There just aren't too many variations in the story like I was hoping for, but the connection the show creates between the viewer and the characters is pretty good.

    1. The Wire is sick I have all the seasons of it. With the Walking Dead I recommend reading the graphic novel. I, like you, don't really like comics but my girl got me Vol.1 for my last birthday and it's awesome.

      1. I'm in the process of getting all of the seasons. The first two episodes are good so far, and I only expect it to get better. I might have to look for the Walking Dead graphic novels somewhere and try them out.

  6. Thanks for all the well wishes! We actually head out Monday morning and we are taking the northern most route.

    1. I did a quick route search and saw that you have the option of going through New York City and Philly or Erie and Cleveland.

2 of those cities are pillars of America with amazing rich history, and the other 2 have been called the armpits of the nation several times in the past. However… the armpits are more fuel efficient… but when's the next time you're gonna be able to hit up 2 of the most amazing cities in the U.S.?

      1. Actually… both of those cities share their namesakes with bodies of water that have literally caught on fire in the past due to heavy pollution.

But… no matter what… he's gonna be lookin' at alot of corn and soy.

  7. The St. Louis Cardinals are now 2-0 in the World Series in years that a new Happy Feet movie comes out. I wonder what the Sabermatrics look like on that stat….

    1. Found it!

  8. Sold both of my HP Touchpads (well in the process of selling the second one) got $200 for the 16Gb and $300 for the 32Gb. Then just bought a new 16Gb Galaxy Tab 10.1 for $380.

      1. I do like it. I just want something that will continue to be supported. Also it will be nice not having to double purchase software once on Android and WebOS. I like the feel of the TouchPad a bit more though.

If anyone on here wants the 32Gb Touchpad with HP case I'll sell it to you for $250. Then we'll see on shipping
