Google+ App Available for iOS (iPhone)

The official iOS app for Google+ plus has been approved (finally) and is now available on Apple iTunes. According to the official description it’s, “Compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.” It’s strange that the the iPod Touch isn’t listed as a compatible device, though I’m sure it will work on it as well (bsukenyan, care to give it a try?). I’m going to try it on my iPad 2, but I’m sure the resolution will bother me.

This is a huge step for Google+. Previously iPhone users had to use a really basic web interface to use Google+. The mobile-web interface is bare bones and doesn’t really encourage use. The new app will surely make Google+ on iOS more popular.

If you’ve tried the app, I’d love to hear your initial thoughts on it (please!).

Update: Apparently this version of the app does not work with iPod Touch and iPad. People on those devices will have to stick to the web “optimized” site according to ThisIsMyNext.

  1. Yeah I read this earlier and tried to get the app on my ipod touch before the update announcement that doesn't work but didn't have time to post about this. I could only find the app through itunes on my laptop, not on my actual ipod touch. It is strange that it will only work for iphone.

A little disappointing, but it really doesn't feel like that big of a deal to me. I'm usually on my laptop enough anyways, and since I have a blackberry now that's really were I would really love to have a Google+ app, but I hope to have an android phone in a few months anyways (@Ray, have any extras you might wanna sell later) so it honestly doesn't feel like a big deal to me.

  2. I'm guessing the app is built around location gathering data and the iPad and Touch aren't capable of that. I had no clue that if I swiped to the left it would show other G+ users near my current location. That's kinda weird to be honest.

      1. Yes I know that, but on the iOS app if you are on the stream there is a field for Nearby that you can swipe at and it uses your current location to show you other G+ users. I assume those people can't see me since I have no public circles.

      2. I guess this is perhaps Google's realtime Groupon killer once NFC or some kind of bluetooth is enabled in most businesses?
