Verizon Tiered Data Starting in July, Prices Revealed?

Verizon has been up front with its plans to eventually move from a flat charge for unlimited data to a tiered system. It looks like those plans have been revealed. Droid-Life obtained some documentation allegedly sent by company executives that outlines the new data fees.

On top of monthly voice charges, Verizon’s new data plans will cost $30 a month for 2GB, $50 a month for 5GB, and $80 a month for 10GB. Additional data will cost $10 per GB. The pricing is the same for 3G and 4G (LTE) devices. Customers that wish to tether will be charged an additional $20 per month. The current charge for unlimited data is $29.99. The new plans allegedly roll out on July 7, 2011.

It’s kind of a bummer that data pricing continues to escalate even though the cost per GB has actually gone down. I realize that Verizon still needs to recoup the costs of its expensive LTE network, but the pricing seems excessive. Thankfully existing customers will be able to keep their current rate plans, but who knows what will happen when it’s time to renew.

Whether you’re a current Verizon customer, a prospective customer, or a spectator, please let me know how you feel about these new rate plans.

  1. I think it is pitiful that LTE speeds and capacity are matched with EVDO scarcity.

Their costs will be recouped in the fees of other connected devices that aren't phones.

  2. I'm not too happy about it happening at all, but I think a lot of people are with me on that one. It looks like I might be getting a new phone on July 6th. I would've liked to hold off on that for a little longer since not having a job yet means zero income, but I have no clue how much data I will actually be using on a smartphone. If I have to get a new contract later then I will only be getting the $30 2gb data plan because anything more than that will be excessively expensive for me. I will greatly appreciate it when the US cell phone market straightens itself out and gives us some decent pricing, while I'm at it I'd like ten million bucks too.

  3. I honestly can live with out a cell phone (do I want to do that, hell no) and if this happens across the board with all the major carriers I will resort to just emailing lol.

    1. I would resort to Boost mobile or something like that, even though it would probably annoy the hell out of me. I don't know how their service is, but they are dirt cheap. $35 a month for everything I believe.

      1. Free email!!!!

I don't know if I would be able to get a regular phone after having the G2x.

      2. Get an unlocked phone with a Google Voice app. It will only work on wifi… but so would email.

At least you would also have the option to make calls.

      3. Very true… for that matter so is a laptop or any computer.

Does the Touch still make you use an external microphone though?

      4. yes you need the headphones with the mic built in. That and the camera are the only reasons I want an old iphone instead of the ipod touch. Trying to find one is difficult though at a reasonable price. They usually cost so much money it's not worth it to me.

      5. Google Voice isn't a VoIP app, btw. It still requires a "regulard" number to dial into. There are workarounds, like having your Google Voice number forward to a Skype number, but they're not elegant solutions.

  4. I'm on Verizon now and use about 5gb a month. I was planing on waiting for the droid bionic to upgrade, not sure about that now. I may get Thunderbolt now, I saw it was only $150 through amazon.

    1. Did anybody else get the ad that said "Drinking Sunkist is like drinking in the sun. And that's a feeling you never want to end"?

I thought it sounded funny. I've drank in the sun… and it sucks.

      1. Yea I got that ad as well.

        @The song

I didn't think it to be funny. Then again, it is a parody where I'm not at all familiar with the source material.

      2. I hear you. He has a new polka medley on his new album where 70% of the songs parodied are songs I avoid.
