Out of curiosity, who is your ISP and what kind of speeds are you getting? I’m a Time Warner Cable subscriber, but only because AT&T U-Verse isn’t available in my building. Thankfully, the company upgraded the wiring in my building a few months. I just did ran SpeedTest.net and got 24.99 Mb/s down and 1.84 MB/s up with a 17ms ping. That’s much better than what I used to get, but still not as good as the Comcast service I had in San Francisco.
If you have a moment, kindly post your results and let me know if you’re happy with your ISP.
i have Comcast and i'm paying for 6Mpbs up to 15 Mpbs when power boost kicks in. I haven't done a dowload/upload test in awhile but it has to be good to two support iphones, 2 pc's, 1 laptop, and my online gaming.
i finally got around to doing a speed test.

Ping 14ms
this is on a laptop connecting to wirelessly about a good 20 ft away from the router.
Charter: 16down/2up. Considering going to 25mb/2up simply because we have too many devices on our network and it can bog down.
ATT is our only other alternative. Initially we were going to go with them simply because in the case of a major storm…you won't have Charter for 5 months afterward. ATT is a bit quicker. They couldn't provide us with service because there were no open ports in their box. Then a month later they are coming door to door trying to sell us UVerse which we can get. I'd do UVerse if it wasn't so damn expensive. Fastest is 24mb for over 80 per month.
I'm using Verizon DSL. I live in the sticks though (San Tan Valley, AZ…it's not even on your map yet, I guarantee it) and my speed varies on the time of day, how hard the wind is blowing, the general mood of the birds sitting on the phone lines, etc. I had a cable modem through Cox, but it was just as bad and twice as expensive. They're talking about replacing all the old cable & phone lines that come out here soon, so hopefully it'll be better then.
I have Comcast and I'm pretty sure that I get 6Mbps down, but I have not preformed a speed test. I do not remember what my up speed is, but since I only use a laptop, a Tivo, and XBL, using up a lot of bandwidth is never a problem. I'm paying exactly $47.95/month for it after the modem rental fee and $15 discount (because I also have TV with them) is applied.

When the time is right (read: when I get enough money and a proper space) I may need to get your advice on some kick-ass components to build my own PC. I'm going to budget it at around $1,000 to $1,350. I really don't want to spend more than that.

I have built 20-30 machines. It can get pretty tough to drop that kind of money on building a machine, because at that price you can find many pre-built machines with great components. If you are dead set on building it yourself, save yourself some money and stay away from extremely new tech.
What are you going to be using it for? I assume games, but ya never know.
I'm not really "dead-set" on building it myself since I've only built one before (so I know how much of a pain in the ass it can be), but I figured if I built it myself, I could get a better value.
The primary purpose would probably be for gaming, media (and media storage), web surfing and (lastly) work. I have a Steam account at work, but I never get a chance to play anymore. Also my MacBook Pro (running Bootcamp) is not up to par for gaming.

I'm looking at spending about 1k altogether on my new rig. That is everything though. Case and OS even. I'm going with Sandybridge 2500k i5.
You can save $200 or so going with AMD.
This one is from campus, so keep in mind that the server is about 50 miles away (I'm not sure how far away everyone else's is so I thought I would mention it). Also, the entire campus is wireless. I'm not sure how fast the connected desktops here are, but they are much faster. I got:

Wow. Those speeds are not even close to available around here. I only get 5 down and 0.5 up at home on CableOne.
I am generally on my cell phone (like now) and I just got 0.6 down and 0.33 up.
I toke the speed test, 111 ping, 1.03mb/s up, and 8.91mb/s down through Suddenlink Communications. We don't really have a lot of choice here in Jonesboro and all the services suck out here. (ATT just now got 3G out here yesterday.) I just wish those speed test were more realistic because I know I'm lucky if I can get a mb/s downloading a game through Steam.

Higher download than I expected, but the upload dropped which I did expect. I don't think I have actually ever gotten those download speeds- ever. I really don't know what the pings mean.
Ping rates measure latency, which is super important for gaming.
I'm with Comcast also at 6Mbps.

Yesterday I dropped a call. It was significant to me because I hardly ever talk on my phone. I also wasn't able to send emails out very quickly. It took 10 minutes per email it seemed (in reality it was closer to 8 minutes). Hello Verizon iPhone 4. I will pick you up before class that morning.
