Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda believes that Kinect for Xbox 360 will “blow away” iPad launch sales. Either he genuinely believes that or he’s trying to outdo Aaron Greenberg’s prediction that Kinect will sell three-million units. Here’s what Tsunoda told Gamasutra:
The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we’re looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that’ll blow away any of the sales you’ve seen with iPad.
I’m a big fan of Tsunoda. I loved his work on EA Sports’ Fight Night series. When the first Fight Night games were being made, Kudo and I were usually the only guys wearing shades indoors at videogame events. All those bonds aside, I’m going to give him this week’s Brian Fellow award for saying crazy sh*t. I just don’t see how Kinect’s launch will be more successful than the iPad’s (without the use of really creative math).
What do you think of Tsunoda’s words? Will Kinect have a more successful launch than the iPad? Or am I right to yell, “That’s crazy!!!” at Kudo’s quote?
In one word no
Sure, sell 3 million in less than 80 days like Apple did their iPads. I don't see that with this device.
Not happening…. but has anyone heard about the Samsung Galaxy Tab?
@N8R Yes, I've heard a lot about it. :P
@ Ray
Your thoughts?
Or is there an article coming up.
@N8R It's interesting, but I don't think it will be great. Android isn't optimized for tablet computing yet. Google has stated that 3.0 Gingerbread will be the first version with specific tablet optimizations, but that hasn't stopped dozens of vendors from making Android 2.1/2.2 tablets.
@N8R
I saw a short video a couple days ago talking about the Galaxy that was kinda funny, comparing it to an iPad and showing how it actually gave you options, more to do, etc. It seems interesting though.
@Kinect
I really don't know how the sales of Move and Kinect are actually going to go. Personally I would love to see Kinect become a huge success and get some good games out for it.
@ Ray
I think it's a great option for the Apple haters…. but c'mon. It's almost a clone of the iPad just smaller (I think). Nobody could arguably say Apple makes bad stuff while holding the Galaxy Tab.
If someone were to say "I got this instead of the iPad because it was cheaper"… I'll accept that… but that's like the only excuse I could see.
@N8R Yes, it's smaller — 7" screens. I actually prefer its size. I'd love an iPad that size (with Retina Display).
I think it's silly to call it an iPad clone. Tablet computing is going to get huge in the next year. That's just another form factor.
@ Ray
You're probably right.
The smaller factor does weigh in. I hope Samsung does well with it.
I think Android tablets are gonna be great. iPad apps are so robust in comparison to a phone so I'm sure Android community will be quite spectacular in that regard.
I prefer iPad size though. It's just right.
@smartguy Eventually I think Android tablets will be great. I'm not particularly sold on the Galaxy Tab.
@Ray
I think the bottleneck of the Android tabs will be the different hardware configurations they run. I think eventually there will be a disparity in software performance and compatibility. The iPad will always hold that advantage.
As far as the Samsung tabs are concerned though I think they will be fine. There will be a tremendous amount of competition this year in that market. I don't see them releasing a bad product just for the sake of getting it out. Unless Touchwiz is just awful on a tab.
@smartguy I don't think the Galaxy Tab will be bad. I just don't think it will be great. Android 2.1/2.2 wasn't designed for tablets and the apps weren't coded for use on a screen that size. The hardware will be fine, but the software will look and feel clunky compared to the iPad.
All that said, I have high expectations for Android tablets in 2011. With Gingerbread and app optimization, things will get really interesting.
Keep in mind that for my purposes, Android is far more useful to me than iOS.
@Ray
Truth be told I'll own an Android tablet as well. I like variety.
The iphone apps that run on the iPad do not perform bad or look bad really. I think a retina display will help that though. I think 2.1 or 2.2 can handle a tablet though. We're fixing to see a lot of manufacturers push them out. I think just because the form factor grows the apps don't need to be emulated or will suffer because of it.
What do you think of the bottleneck I mentioned earlier? You are the only person who will ever engage me in that kind of topic. We should do beers one day.
@smartguy The only reason 2.1/2.2 works on tablets is because manufacturers have hacked it to do so. 3.0 will be geared for tablet use on day one. The tablets that launch with 3.0 will be much better.
As for the bottleneck, I don't see it being any better or worse than phones. There's a wide variety of CPUs, GPUs, screen resolutions, etc. in the Android phones available today.
Beers sound excellent. I think I'll have a Samuel Adams right now. I've been enjoying the pumpkin ale and black lager this week.
I agree with Microsoft when they say that "Kinect will blow."
Oh, wait…there's more to that statement? ::reads further::
BUWAHAHAHA!!! That shit ain't happening!
im more interested in looking at those girls in that picture than i am in kinect. Ill buy it when i see one good game
@Ray
Hacked? I'd think it wouldn't be hard to do since you are using an OS designed for ARM architecture instead of x86.
Wild Bill's pumpkin ale is a good one. At dinner last night I had Anchor Steam Liberty Ale
