TNA is using several ECW originals for a “one more night” angle. One one hand, WWE did a terrible job with the ECW brand and ended up pissing on what made the original show so unique. On the other hand, going with this angle is another example of using old talent instead of creating new stars. While Tommy Dreamer delivered a passionate promo, if you hit the mute button you see a bunch of wrestlers that are way past their primes…and also Rhino.
What do you think of this angle? Is it just a bunch of old guys taking the spotlight away from younger talent? Or is it one more chance for the “real” ECW to shine after being tarnished by WWE?
On some level, your business grows stale if you don't go about pushing new talent. But if you're going to push old talent, the least you could do is NOT copy a bad angle. Heck, don't even copy a good angle. Create an angle. Make me care. I'm not the least bit interested in watching the exact same thing I saw years ago on another channel when these guys still kinda mattered.
Guys like Joe, Motor City Machine Guns, Generation ME and others are already struggling to get a justified push. Heaping more guys who can barely walk anymore on top of them isn't helping. How many times has Raven or Stevie been repackaged on TNA already? It's not new and it's not fresh.
ECW One Night Stand was and will always be just that: A one-time event. Storm vs. Jericho, a great promo from Paul E, and the best thing of the night — Awesome vs. Tanaka. It was a shame RVD was injured, but that's life in the business.
