Xbox 360 Kinect Listed at $149.99 on GameStop: Too Much?

GameStop has listed Kinect for Xbox 360 at $149.99. This is a pre-order price and subject to change. Let’s forget about that for a second and pretend this is the “real” price. Is it too much for this peripheral? Considering you can buy a Wii for just a bit more money, it seems kind of steep. I’m going to have to give it more thought, buy my initial reaction is that Microsoft better price this thing lower or it’s going to flop.

  1. Honestly anything over $50 is too much for this in my opinion. There isn't enough content that was shown that would make me want to be flail in my living room.

  2. I honestly thought $99 was a decent enough price point. After all, they have the audacity to sell other cheap, crappy peripherals at that same price so it makes sense in a way.

    However, $150 is not a very family-friendly price, especially when a lot of people are looking for a job to pay the rent and eat. I'm going to assume that Microsoft is going to do everything in the world to convince us that Kinect is a bargain of a lifetime, but it's hard to sell snake oil to a snake oil salesman if you know what I mean.

  3. Way to steep. The total cost of gaming on the xbox is at critical mass, how the hell do they expect to get new customers with a cost of (maxed out) $500+ before a game!? They have to make a bundle or something.

  4. @BB

    Iceman linked an article that showed how MS is going to have another Arcade sku and it hypothesizes that wifi would not be built in to the new sku. I agree with YOU this time lol, too much $$$

  5. @Big Blak

    When your main competition started out with an $800 console, you tend to be able to get away with a little more. I would assume so at least. You are right though, it is a little ridiculous when you think about it.

  6. @ SG

    Finally lol. So what your saying is that there will be wifi and non wifi version?

    @ BSU

    I thought about that as well but the ps3 doesn't cost that much any more, but we will have top see how much move will be. I think it will be around $80 no more than $100 because regular controllers are roughly $50.

  7. I honestly felt like the content shown wasn't anything the PS Eye wasn't capable of. I mean I am sure that there is more technicalities than what there appears to be on the surface, but I don't see 3x the price

  8. MS Aaron Greenberg says that price is purely speculative at this point. He's a straight shooter. I hope that's the honest answer and this thing comes in under $100.

  9. I still haven't seen any games worth playing with any of the new motion controls. I think actually controlling the menu screens with Kinect would be awesome, but not worth $150.

    @BB

    I think that would be a smart 'move' for Sony, to make their product no more than $100 to really compete.

    And yes the PS3 is no longer $800, but since it started off so high MS is still thinking of such a high competition price as something that they can take advantage of.

  10. im so jealous of ray right now, but yeah i agree 99 bucks seems to be the price point here

    @bsu

    when was the ps3 800 bucks? lol

  11. @slicky

    well Ray's guy was right, that 149 price was purely speculative. It's actually more expensive lol

  12. I am looking forward to seeing how Microsoft is going to sell this, because so far my 4 year old PS Eye can do much of the same stuff (only in game though) I can move through menus with my hand. Also the symbol used when the guy was moving through the dashboard (the hand with a circle that filled in around it) is the EXACT same as one of my PS Eye games.

    Everything else the Kinect can do the Wii does already.

    Voice commands are the only thing that sets it apart, but I'd want to play with it first to see if I am impressed

  13. I think a lot of the final pricing will depend on move. I imagine the 2 will be similarly priced. Although with the move you have to buy 2 sphere controllers, 2 joystick attatchments, and the playstation eye. So who knows

  14. @Shockwave

    But at least for people like me who already have bought the PS Eye, we get to still use it. I know that doesn't help the people who don't own it save any money, but I am happy the PS actually used some existing hardware to do theirs. But still the PS Eye new is only $30.

  15. @slicky – I think you have a good point. I'm sure MS is going to take the angle that you can have 4 players for $150 whereas you'd need to buy 8 peripherals + an eye toy to have 4 players on Move. (but that's the corporate angle. at this point I think I'd rather have a move)

  16. I want to name my xbox the same as my Ex-wife. That way I can tell her what to do whenever I want.

    I liked someone's idea for HAL ( I remember when I found out HAL was 1 letter away from IBM, mind-blowing)
