Coffee Talk #144: Do You Like Mediocre Games/Music/Movies?

I’ve been questioning my taste in movies for the last year or so. I think it started when I saw Semi-Pro on cable. I really enjoy Will Ferrell movies, but this one got panned so I didn’t see it in theaters. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it on cable. It wasn’t a great movie, but it certainly entertained me. It was the same exact thing with Forgetting Sarah Marshall — totally enjoyed it, despite the poor reviews. Next it was Role Models, I Love You, Man, and Land of the Lost.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Ken Griffey, Jr. sleeping in the clubhouse, whether Lebron James should ditch Cleveland, or Howard the Duck, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Initially I was worried that getting older has made me lower my standards, but I don’t think that’s the case. I realize that some of these movies aren’t the best; I just happen to find a lot of the writing and scenes entertaining. Perhaps I’m just drawn to Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Jason Segel. I don’t know and really, I don’t care anymore. I accept that I enjoy these movies and I’m comfortable with it.

Today I want to know what movies, games, music, etc. you enjoy, even though you know they’re not the best. Let’s celebrate mediocrity on this fine Thursday!!!

  1. Yeah, I watch some movies that I know will be bad just for the sake of entertainment. I don't expect everything I watch to be considered "academy worthy" lol. Example: Poultrygeist. Disgusting, funny, very B.

    Games? Hmmm…not really I guess. I used to enjoy games that were dumb and over the top…but for some reason I demand more out of my games. I had wanted to get the new 50 cent game because it seemed ridiculous and over the top…but I never acted on that idea.

  2. I can't stand mediocrity in movies, music, or games. If i don't think i'll like it i'll give my opinion about it and make others aware of it. I don't think you're alone, i like all of those movies. Semi-Pro and Role Models the best of the ones you mentioned. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is more cuz i like Mila and she's insanely hot in that movie but only in that movie to me. I'll have to watch Land of the Lost again but i wasn't a fan of it when i saw it on dvd then again i never saw the series either.

    @Griffey Jr

    As much as he's denying and the Mariners are too. We know it's true. This guy has just broken down since 2002 or 2003. He was a great player but it's time to call it a career. his baseball game was awesome on SNES btw.

    @Lebron ditching Cleveland

    he should they're really not giving him a chance to win. They don't have the financial backing to do it. Come on, getting anderson varejao, a way past his prime Shaq, and Antwan Jamison are not a really great supporting cast to me.

    @howard the duck

    what about this movie? it was okay. i liked it growing up. are they going to remake it?

  3. I rarely listen to critics anymore. I normally like the movies that critics crap on anyways. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a masterpiece. I watch it anytime I see it on HBO. As for games, I actually liked Spider-Man: Web of Shadows despite it's lackluster reviews.

  4. @ Smartguy

    I thought I was gonna be the only person who knew what Poultrygeist was?

    @ topic

    I LOVE B horror. Especially the B horror grindhouse flicks from the 60's and 70's. I'm a Herschel Gordon Lewis fanboy. The Sleepaway Camp series was dreadfully great. They are remaking I Spit On Your Grave which really pisses me off, about as much as remaking Last House On The Left did.

    I could totally rant about this.

    @ Will Ferrell

    I hated him when he was on SNL. I saw him as the beginning of the end. However, I really liked about half of his movies that I've seen. Anchorman sticking out amongst them all, but I also liked Semi-Pro, Step Brothers, and Blades of Glory. His stand up of You're Welcome America was hilarious as well.

    He's been doing this reoccurring cameo on 30 Rock when they talk about a show that used to be on the network that pissed off the women's groups called "Bitch Hunter". It'll just show him like kicking down the door of a knitting class or something and saying "You're under arrest… BITCH!". It's hilarious.

  5. @ tokz

    If they remake Howard the Duck, I will wait until Ray is in Asia or visiting his parents… and I will burn down Hollywood myself.

  6. @ N8R

    I love the Bitch hunter clips, I hope its on tonight.

    @ Topic

    I love B movies to death. My gf and I make it a point to watch a B movie a week because sometimes you find a gem but most of the time we just end up doing our own MST3000.

    @ Lebron

    Lets see what happens tonight, I did hear some sports radio from Cleavland and boy, they are not happy with the "king".

  7. Some B movies aren't half bad, Some on the other hand are just plain awful.

    As far as games are, I like what I like no matter what the reviews are. I, like jedirevan, like Web of Shadows too. I even like the SF-Ex plus alpha games and what not. I've even hated highly reviewed games. ODST- Wasn't really a fan of. Halo Wars- I couldn't really get into it. Half-life- I know shooters age poorly, but all the hype over this game IMO is a bunch of doo-doo. Thats right doo-doo. I tried to play through to get to the "good" parts only to eventually realize that I would have rather played Duke Nukem for N64.

  8. @tokz_21Land of the Lost cracked me up. I love its use of music, particularly from A Chorus Line. The female lead is actually from one of my favorite bad moves of all time — Goal.

    @TheJediRevan I'm convinced that Russell Brand is on the verge of greatness…or a heroin relapse. There's brilliance just waiting to come out of this man.

    @N8R Thanks for the heads up!

  9. @ray

    Don't you knock Goal, that movies a classic. And I have to say I thought Danny Mcbride was funnier than Will in Land of the Lost.

  10. @rpad

    I can't believe you like or watched Goal. I'll watch Land of the Lost like i said but i think this is a movie that the do a lot of nods to the original series and having not watched it or remember watching i may lose things here and there. Hey is Russell Brand reprising his character for Aldus Snow for the movie take him to the greek or was i imagining that?

    @n8r

    I'll have to watch it again before i join you on that burning down of Hollywood.

  11. @Arguello Kuno Becker's accent in that movie is fascinating. It changes every third scene.

    @tokz_21 I liked goal because it was awesomely bad. Also, one of the best times of my life was in Newcastle.

    And yes, Brand is returning as a relapsed Aldous Snow.

  12. @ N8;

    I'll provide all the gasoline. Call me when you're ready.

    @ Topic;

    I enjoyed Castlevania 64. There I said it! Yes, the game looked and played like crap, but I still actually enjoyed it. The atmosphere of the game felt right being isolated and murky. I used to be a big Castlevania fan and I actually played its first foray into three dimensions over and over again. In contrast, I thought Devil My Cry (1) sucked monkey balls. Sure it was pretty to look at and it "played" well enough, but the game seemed to lack a soul (for lack of a better phrase). I stopped playing it after the second level and never looked back.

    So screw you, game critics, for telling me that games I like are bad while telling me games I hate are good!

    @ Mr. Padilla;

    In a completely unrelated matter; could you tell me which games of 2010 are bad and which games are good, please?

  13. @Lebron

    Yeah it might be time for him to leave Cleveland under those circumstances you mentioned, but being a former resident of Ohio and seeing how crazy 99.9% of the people who live there are, I would not be surprised if he just stayed with Cleveland. If he leaves though I have heard he will most likely be going to play in Portugal. There is a LOT more money for him to make over there compared to the U.S. and he would not have to play as hard to win.

    @Big Blak

    What were some of those sports announcers saying about him?

    @Topic

    I cannot stand mediocre comedy movies, sorry Ray but I hate Will Ferrell movies the most. Never really enjoyed his work. When I watch a movie I like it to be good in its acting, or story, or something- anything. I am sure that there are plenty of bad movies that I like, but I am pretty sure most of those are from horror/slasher/action genres. And I critique the hell out of those movies for being so bad sometimes. I hold a pretty high standard for the movies I watch, most of the time at least. Overall though I just don't really like comedy movies, they aren't that funny to me.

  14. @bsukenyan Initially I thought Will Ferrell was the perfect supporting comedian. I loved him in Zoolander and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He totally won me over with Anchorman.

  15. @Ray

    I will give you anchorman, although I didn't completely like the movie, it was fairly decent. Funny or Die's the Landlord video is about the only time I consistently liked his acting, and that video got old the fifth time I watched it.

  16. @ Tokz;

    Are you kidding me? The only way someone could enjoy Zoolander is if they were blazed high on…

    oh, wait.

    Sorry.

    -M

  17. @Big Blak

    Oh ok gotcha. Yeah there are a lot of bandwagon haters for sure.

  18. What do we do when we fall of the horse???

    ::awkward silence::

    We get back on….

    Sorry Maury, I'm no gymnast.

  19. Do you understand that the world does not revolve around you and your "do whatever it takes, ruin as many people's lives, so long as you can make a name for yourself as an investigatory journalist, no matter how many friends you lose or people you leave dead and bloodied along the way, just so long so you can make a name for yourself as an investigatory journalist, no matter how many friends you lose or people you leave dead and bloodied and dying along the way"?

  20. Earth to Matilda, I was at a day spa. Day- D-A-I-Y-E.

    Derrick look at the date.

    I don't care what the date says. ::checks answering machine:: "You have 12 hundred messages". That is a bit above average.

  21. @ Tokz

    Dude I have that whole thing on my voice mail on the cell, most people don't get it.

    Hello……..is this god?

  22. @Big Blak

    I love that line. It's too much to remember luckily i was just able to copy it from wikipedia. I love you internetz!

    God?! What the sh*t are you talking about?! It's me, Maury.

  23. @Big Blak

    Do you think on L4D the Crash Course DLC was worth it? I was thinking about getting it but I know I could better spend the money somewhere else if it really isn't worth it. I am having a hard enough time getting a couple of the achievements on just the regular campaigns as it is. The no friendly fire achievement is harder than I thought it would be!!

  24. There is this Nazi bi@tch at work who has set her fazers on "I want to fire someone" and she's been trying to point them at me lately. That's why I've been quite lately and will have to stay that way for a while. Wish she would fire herself.

    @topic

    It's not a matter of like, but time and money.

  25. what constitutes "mediocre"?

    comedies arent mediocre just because they are low brow…stepbrothers was brilliant

    i love you man was funny, sarah marshall was great, anything with jason siegel (sp) is great. Superbad was awesome, bill hader is a genius

    alright, city slicka! (or jobin)

    US News and World Report is conducting and online poll about selling violent video games to kids in the wake of the Supreme Court hearing the case brought forth by California law, but the question is so poorly worded, it borderlines on misleading. 27. @ BSU

    It was the fans not the announcers, just bad mouthing him hard, bandwagon haters basically.

    @ Zoolander lovers

    HASEL IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW!!!

  28. @Big Blak

    Congratulations. Wish the Cavs would've played a better game, but they really just don't come with it in the playoffs. Now I'm waiting for Lebron's press release to say what he's doing next.

  29. why would lebron NOT go to miami?

    oh wait, then id have to hear iceman talk more crap that i already do

  30. @Ray

    What franchise?? HA! They would have nothing. Mo Williams can make outside shots during the season, but can't do anything in the playoffs (exhibit A: this year and last year playoff seasons), Shaq is a washed up player that the Cavs never should have gotten in the first place, Varejo is not always the most consistent. Lebron is the franchise…he leaves and they are left with nothing again.

    I hear the Knicks, Bulls, and someone else that I can't remember are all interested in him. But he can still make more money in Portugal which I heard before he was considering.

  31. @bsukenyan Do you really think he's going to go to Portugal? He seems so driven to win it all and his career would be viewed in a negative light.

  32. @Ray

    Yeah he is very driven to win it all, and it's a toss up just like whether he will try and stay with the Cavs to win it all someday, or if he will go to any team necessary just to be on a team to win it all. Money is a powerful motivator, and while I don't really think that Portugal is very likely…if people thought he made ridiculous amounts of money when he entered the NBA, that would look like small change compared to what he could make in Europe supposedly.

    It seems to be the classic question of: how much would it cost to buy you?

  33. I'm a movie snob. Comes from working at Blockbuster for 6 years. I just can't watch a lot of stuff that other people find funny, like Will Farrell movies for example.

    I'm a bit more lenient when it comes to mediocre games if they're fairly engaging. I can usually overlook their minor flaws and enjoy them for what they're worth.

  34. i just meant that you are a dolphins fan, and im a bills fan, and im gonna have to hear you twice next year, cause we suck

    im italian, so yeah i feel you on the antagonistic dna
