Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, your favorite news from SXSW, Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) turning 27 today, or your baseball team’s spring training results, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
I played Dragon Age: Origins Awakening until 5:30AM this morning. Part of it was because I intend to write two stories about the game this weekend. Part of it was because this bug pissed me off and I lost 90 minutes of game time (I wasn’t saving religiously *smacks head*). Most of it was because I was enjoying the hell out of this expansion pack.
Due to my ridiculous play session, I was a little late for secret project and today’s Coffee Talk is more about your lunchtime beverage than your morning one. Still, I don’t regret it. Secret project is on my own schedule, so it’ll just be tighter to meet my goals for today. I am sorry that today’s column is late, but that’s really BioWare’s fault. Ha!
Has a game ever made you late for work or school? Share your stories in the comments section (please)!
Not really. I'm pretty good at not playing in the morning unless I have time to. Sleep on the other hand has been lost.
@Sandrock323 Technically I was playing through the night. :P
It's happened to me a few times. My favorite reason for why I was late to work once (about 12 years ago), most people wouldn't believe me.
@N8R
That's just a good story begging to be told now…lol
@N8R
I was very impressed. I saw Reverend Horton Heat a few weeks back and they are badass if you get the chance.
I used to always fall alseep with a controller in my lap and wake up in the morning still in my recliner and have to scramble to get to work on time.
@ Smartguy
Down with the rockabilly, huh? I played rockabilly for almost 10 years and would love to get back in to it. Unfortunately, where I'm at every band is either trying to rip off Sublime or play metal. I found a guy recently who just wants to do all Elvis songs and that's actually a little refreshing.
I think i saw Dick Dale once, and missed the Reverened once. I'd like to see them though.
@ bsukenyan
It's actually much more simple than that. I was getting it on with 2 girls at the same time. The crazy thing is, when i showed up to work an hour and a half late, my boss at the time didn't even care that I was late. "He was like "Dude, your the best employee I have, and I'm sure you had a good reason." I said "Oh… I have a great reason." and left it at that.
@ Smartguy
This is the commercial I mentioned in yesterday's Coffee Talk:

@ Smartguy
Do you mean you'd do it to her in a bear cage?
I only remember on Dash Rip rock song, and that was "Let's Go Smoke Some Pot".
@N8R
after a fish biscuit!
Listen to "Big Daddy Likes Whiskey". It's my favorite.
I've never been late from playing but I have played up until the last minute to where I have to speed to get to work with only a minute to spare.
@ Iceman
Hilarious.
I showed it to my wife and she said she saw it on tv one night and was trying not to laugh out loud so she wouldn't wake me up. I said "why didn't you order one?" and she punched me in the shoulder.
@ N8R
Yep, thats a great reason to be late.
@iceman
hahaha. Hilarious vid, is it just me or were those models holding it like they were waiting for something to shoot out at them
@rpad
I think that was more meant for Emanuel I think he was getting on Jim's and max's nerve defending clottey's strategy. Emanuel was being pretty annoying with his analysis.
I went to the midnight release of Halo 2, There was free pizza and tournaments going on all night. A radio station was even giving away concert tickets and what not. Anyway needless to say that was while I was still in high school, and I finally left at like 5 and school started at like 7:30, I managed to make it but slept for like 2 periods in my homeroom. ahh memories….
It’s never made me like for work or school but it has made me late for dates and bday parties. I’m always late meeting my gf because i’m always playing but we’re always late because she’s never ready when i go pick her up.
I am consistently late for night classes and late study sessions usually due to me just wanting to get one my level done, or get to the next save point, etc. In high school I used to stay up late playing Doom, commander keen, and supaplex on my laptop and would be almost late to class every day because of that. Missing a class or all of them in a day has been known to happen in the past. I will say that one of the more embarrassing times I have missed something due to video games was when I missed my bus stop due to being involved in a fierce plants V zombies level, and had to get off at a later stop and walk back to my apartment.
I was late a hour and a half to work once due to Far Cry 2 map editor (or was it my incredible sense of time?).
I’ve put off house work to keep playing a game. Don’t think I’ll get to my taxes this weekend so I can play some more Dragon Age.
Nope.
I was late to auditing on Thursday because I went and saw Dick Dale. It was worth it.
Every day, man, every day.
Last night in particular I started a game of horde mode late (or early) at about one in the morning because I figured that someone will leave early or after we fail a round, everyone will quit; then I’ll go to sleep. Unfortunately, everyone kept playing (four of us, anyway) up to three in the morning and my wife kind of got pissed and I had to turn it off and go to bed. I was at wave 32 or something like that and it kind of sucks that I had to leave those guys to fend for themselves.

When GTA Vice City came out I skipped work for 2 days and used some of my sick time up. During the MAG Beta I came in 2 hours late because it was only open while I am at work (still never got it to work). Nearly everyday I kinda miss work, because I’ll take my PSP into the restroom and hide out and play some God of War or Assassins Creed for 30-40 minutes.
But i have never been late to class because of a game.
@ Smartguy
Dick Dale is badass.
@N8R
love rock-a-billy. The band in that movie you were associated with had a rock a billy sound to them.
I’m also a big Dash Rip Rock fan. I used to “roadie” for them when I was younger. That basically meant keep the beers flowing and reward the flashers with free beer or whiskey. (at the time I was senior brewer at the Abita Brewing Co. and we sponsored them).
I knew what commercial you were talking about. If I am ever stuck on an island with her, I’m gonna try and pull a Sawyer on her before I shove her off a cliff.
@ N8;
I got a better commercial for you:

… c’mon, now they’re just asking for it. I especially love the CGI chick in the demonstration. I can only imagine what the designers were really using that model for.

Here’s a great video that mocks Jim Lampley’s (possibly cocaine driven) call of, “Bang! Bang! Bang! Another one! Bang! Bang!” during the Pacquico/Clottey fight.
@ Thundercracker;
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
-M
Happy birthday Thundercracker!!! Thanks for supporting my site and making it a cool place to hang out.
@Thundercracker
Happy birthday!! have a good one!!
@N8R
Yeah I'm not sure how many people actually believe someone when they say they accomplished that, but it is an excellent reason.
Straight up, Happy Birthday Thundercracker. May you be partying so hard that you don’t have the time to read this today.
thank you all so much, yes its been a busy weekend, getting my life back in order…
lots of frothy adult beverages may or may not have been involved

Happy Belated Birthdayd Thundercracker ^^
@topic – I might not have been late for work or college but I have lost years of sleep lol.
