Today’s Poll: What’s Your Next Mobile OS?

Microsoft made a big splash today with Windows Phone 7 Series. It adds another combatant to the extremely interesting mobile-phone market. I wanted to see which OS interests you the most. I realized a few seconds ago that I forgot all about RIM’s BlackBerry OS, but after a few minutes of thought, I realized that it was probably the right move. BlackBerry OS 5 is not a modern OS and isn’t really comparable to the others in the poll.

Anyway, take the poll and share your thoughts (please)!

  1. I'm thinking Maemo if I can get the device at a good price…otherwise I'll stick with Apple for the foreseeable future.

  2. @Ray

    I wasn't speaking of a subsidy. I don't buy with subsidies now. I bought my Iphone at full price. I just like a good price.

    The other part of the equation is that TMobile where I live is really not that good. I went into their store and did some speedtests on MyTouch phones and didn't get any better performance than my Iphone got on ATT. I'm hoping that their service improves sometime this year so I can go to them without much worry. I'll use the Wifi while at school since there is no 3G in that area.

  3. Really if the N900 were on Verizon I'd switch there in a heartbeat. I really like the device, but would like to use 3G near where I live and work. I used an amazon link on here to check them out again and watched the demo video lol. Damn you Nokia.

  4. I love my BB but I'd like something new (no reason just like new stuff). I had considered picking up the LG eXpo with WinMo 6.5, but it was only sold online and always labeled "out of stock" and now its no long on the website.

    I am thinking I may hold out to see what new thing Apple is going to offer with years model iPhone.

    I know nothing about the Nokia OSs and I hate my friends Palm Pre, so no WebOS for me. I'd like Android but I don't see AT&T getting it soon.

    So to sum it up I am completely undecided on what OS to choose next time. But I am long due for an upgrade and I'd like to use it soon.

    I know, it's fantasy land. I have read that most of these radio frequency chips are software controlled now…or in other words, they could be modified or changed with a firmware revision. I'm not viciously scouring the net to see if I can find this to be true and make an N900 work on ATT 3G where I live.

  6. Wow, I guess TMobile updated their site as far as coverage is concerned, it now covers the area where I go to school at.

    Question: Do you think 1700mhz band is any better than what ATT is using? I know they are migrating all 3G data to an 850mhz band. Just curious.

  7. @Ray

    Damn you sir, damn you. I have learned today that TMobile has increased their 3G footprint in my area, increased backhaul and has the same speeds if not greater more often than not of their rival ATT. The up is always a half meg. The down is consistently 900. The plans are cheap, and the family plan is literally $50 cheaper per month for us. Now to convince my other half that the time is now.

    @Sandrock

    BB O/S and Mobile OSX are amazing if you have never used them. BB O/S in my opinion is very steady and great for someone who isn't very tech savvy.

    It wasn't meant to imply you are tech illiterate.

    Less corporate control is a good thing, however the Iphone does everything it is supposed to very well, the same for the BlackBerry. Granted there is a heavy handed control (at least on the Iphone) but they work as advertised. You can download apps for blackberry from a multitude of places, you don't have to use their App store. So technically there is less considerably less control on the blackberry unless the carrier has it crippled.

    I'm considering getting an N900 but in my research of the product I am finding out that I will have a difficult time syncing it to my Mac and that the email client on it is pretty far behind the Iphone and BB.

    @Ray

    Do you know why you can only put 2gig of applications on the N900? That seems absurd given that you have 32gig available in the box.

  9. i went with google android, cause im really happy with my hero, although i realize it isnt the best phone on the market, blah blah blah…but im paying 59 bucks a month for unlimited internet with 900 anytime minutes with free calls to any cell phone on any network, as well as free nights and weekends….i may not use 1 minute though

    sprint just has the best deal in wireless right now i think, and the 3g is pretty damn good, even inside the ups hub

  10. TMobile has $60 for unlimited text, web and 500 minutes. That is plenty for someone like me. I just need to do more research on the N900 before I take the plunge.

  11. yep you are correct smartguy

    but you have to pay for your phone upfront, so you are prolly looking at 400 bucks for that up front, but thats not really a big deal

  12. @Thundercracker

    It's cool. I was like that most of the weekend. I think I will take it easy today instead of drinking heavily. Might just stay at home today.

  13. @Smartguy

    I'm just saying that I'm going to figure out all the ends and outs of the phone I end up with. The less "they" controle, the less I will get pissed. Also, the N900 has full HTML and flash support. Should't you be able to just go to you email online just like with a PC/Mac?

  14. the girlfriend and I were shopping for phones over the weekend as she was ready to go smartphone. She was against the iPhone at first but after playing with the Nexus One (awful phone) she committed to an iPhone. She's pretty happy with it.

    I can't imagine needing to switch phones at this point. but you never know what the future holds

  15. @Sandrock

    True you could just check it via the web, but if you are paying for something it should work. I also prefer the email client as opposed to webmail.

  16. I said the iPhone in the poll, because that is what I am hoping to switch to this summer (my fiance is now considering the iPhone too instead of a blackberry that she has been set on for months)…but if Windows mobile 7 makes a convincing argument and is available with Verizon, they are probably the only competition at this point.

    @ray I'm curious, where would be the best place to read up on information about these cell phones and what the networks are capable of/what mhz they run at, etc. I can pick apart everyone else's comments well enough to understand what they are talking about, but in reality I'm not too sure of the details on it all, and I am very curious about that field.
