What Are You Playing This Weekend?

It looks like it’s going to be another Final Fantasy weekend. I’m at the very end of both FF games I’m playing. In Final Fantasy Tactics for iPad, I’m at the point just before the last round of battles. Naturally, I’m spending my time leveling up characters, poaching for rare items, and enjoying the awesome “secret” characters (Balthier, Cloud, and Luso). Similarly, I’m at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2, but I have no desire to end my adventure just yet. Instead, I’m wandering the lands for items to upgrade my monsters. The Pokemon-like aspect of the game is so much fun for me! Gotta catch (and upgrade) ’em all!!!

How about you? What’s on your weekend playlist?

  1. I just got my computer back up and running. Thanks to N8R for suggesting I look into replacing the actual wiring inside the computer. After the part got shipped here I finally got it installed and my laptop is working again. Also, I just bought Mass Effect 2 for $6.39. I wanted to get the first one too, but I figured I couldn't pass up such a good deal since I'm thinking of playing through the series now. Wanted to get Halo 10th Anniversary, but it isn't on sale now and having just paid a total of $12.78 for Batman Arkham City and Mass Effect 2. That makes it pretty hard to spend $40 on just one game.

      1. It's two words. "De nada"… but I get it. Sometimes them Mexicans have a tendency to roll their words together, like "mijo" which is really supposed to be "mi hijo"

        Now you know.
And knowing is half the battle.
… the other half is guns.

    1. I got Halo Anniversary for $25 new if that makes you feel any better. $6.39 and $12.78 are crazy cheap for those two games (new). How the hell did manage to do that?

      1. Didn't mean to make my statement earlier unclear, but I meant that I got both games for a combined total of $12.78; and actually it was cheaper than that because Batman Arkham City was around $5.35.

They were both purchased at Best Buy. First I got the magazine (for $5.35) that I was referred to by Thundercracker and used the $20 off coupon for Batman AC when it was on sale for $29.99 and also used a $10 reward zone certificate- so the game cost the price of the magazine. From the same magazine there was a $15 off coupon for Mass Effect 2 which is currently $19.99, making my total today $6.39.

I'm hoping that Halo Anniversary goes on sale next week or I just break down and buy it full price this week. Either way I still have to find Mass Effect for cheap as well because I don't want to play #2 first, and I still can't even find a copy of the game anywhere local.

  2. Wow. Way to work the system. Mass Effect (1) is going for $20. That's both the actual market value of the game and it's retail price. Kind of sucks when you bought the sequel for a small fraction of that.

I don't think Halo is worth it's retail price. I think around $20 would be more appropriate. After all, it is just a skin job for an 11 year-old game that I already have (albeit, a very nice skin job). The skulls and terminals (new cut scenes which you can probably see all of them on You Tube) add a nice touch along with the multiplayer maps, but I still say that $40 is way too much.

    1. That's how most people seemed to feel about ODST as well, which was at least a new game on its own. I feel like I wouldn't have hated the entry price of $40 if I bought it when it first came out, but right now after getting some good deals on games and knowing I shouldn't be purchasing (too many) games brand new/at full price I can't bring myself to do it yet. Once it hits $30 again then I will buy.

I might just go ahead and get Mass Effect 1 through Games on Demand, but then I know I won't have any resale possibility and since I haven't played the game I don't know whether I will want to keep it or not. If someone traded in a copy at Best Buy then I still could use a $10 off a used game of $20+, which would be a good deal; however, that is highly unlikely at this point. I can wait a while to play this series though so I have time.

      1. The biggest issues with ODST was marketing and a lack of matchmaking for the firefight maps.

Bungie biggest enemy is it's own success. They broadcasted that ODST was to be DLC and the masses swallowed that pill. When they later decided to turn it into a full-fledged game, they masses felt that it was DLC with a much higher price because the expectations were already ingrained into people's heads. Had they just said: "We're working on a brand new, full-fledged Halo game that does not include any Spartans and takes place during Halo 2.5”, then I think it would have gone over better with people. If they wanted to TRULLY appeal to the masses, they could have even debuted the game for $50 and let people know that they were doing that because they realize that the game is shorter than your average Halo game. This would have instilled goodwill and praise with the gaming community. Instead, they shot themselves in the foot by over-promising and hitting our wallets accordingly.

For the firefight problem, there is no excuse for that. A company that prides itself on multiplayer matchmaking throws together a cooperative playlist and forgets to add the matchmaking component is just asking for trouble. They were either too lazy to do it or too stupid to figure out that firefight needs a matchmaking option.

  3. This coming weekend, I will play Minecraft, as my friend is finally getting a server that'll be up 24/7. It was a grand total of 12$ per person per year, and that's with 7 people paying. It's pretty cheap, actually.
