Panasonic Introduces “The Jungle” Handheld Gaming System

Panasonic is getting back into gaming (remember the 3DO?) with a handheld system called “The Jungle“. Specs on the system have yet to be revealed, but the idea behind The Jungle is novel — software will focus on massively multiplayer experiences. Whether that’s enough to differentiate it from Nintendo’s and Sony’s offerings is another question.

When you have a moment, check out the official videos of The Jungle and let me know what you think. Will the market support a third handheld system (consider the mobile phone gaming is getting huge too)? Or will The Jungle end up next to the N-Gage and Gizmondo in the graveyard of failed portable gaming systems?

  1. So it comes loaded with only one MMO? If you wanted to play 2 MMOs or subscribe to a new one would you have to buy a new machine?

  2. Firstly – I hope that isn't a real picture of the device. It looks like something straight out of the 80s.

    Secondly – I don't know what Battle Star Galactica is about but that looks pretty sweet. Although I know game play looks nothing like that.

  3. It's a cool concept. But I think that's as far as it goes…like Slicky said, that system looks like something out of the 80s. It looks way to bulky and poorly designed to really catch on.

  4. @smartguy From what I understand, you'll be able to download other games too. The focus is on MMOs.

    @Big Blak I don't know. That thing would have been hot in 1988.

  5. eh. i need to see what the rest of their library is going to be looking like. right now i'm just looking forward to SW:The Old Republic and DCU.

    I hope that thing has a substantial hdd then. My wow client pre cataclysm and 4.01 patch sits at 35 gig. I expect Cata to push it past 45.

  7. I predict fail.

    Then again, I also predicted Hillary Clinton as president in 2008.

    @Mr. Padilla;

    Never one to pass up a moment of being an anal-retentive editor; check the spelling of the word "N-Gage" in the last sentence of your article.

    Imagine if that did come out in 1988? What would we have now? I feel a Sliders episode coming.
