Videogame Used in Philippines to Teach Catholicism

My friend sent me an article by PhilStar to poke fun at my people’s love of the Roman Catholic Church. A Filipino priest has developed a game that doubles at a catechism tool. So yeah, my people are using videogames to teach people about Catholicism. Here’s the deal:

The three-dimensional game called “Paolo’s Journey,” developed by Fr. Maximo Villanueva Jr. of the Diocese of Balanga, Bataan, is based on Pope Benedict XVI’s “Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, who chairs the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education, said the Church needs to conduct a “new evangelization,” not for faith propagation, but to remind the faithful of the social teachings of the Church. The target gamers are Grade 3 pupils to college students.

I’m sure this will be followed up by a platformer starring St. Christopher or a first-person shooter where Pope Benedict annihilates demons with holy water. The possibilities are tremendous! If you’re not afraid of going to hell, kindly share your ideas for a Roman Catholic videogame.

  1. Hey, as long as the game is fun to play, I'll give it a shot. And I'm not just saying that because I'm Roman Catholic…

… well, actually, yes I am.

I want to play this game.

Believe it or not, I've thought about this a lot in high school. My idea for a good Roman Catholic game would definitely have a small group of famous saints (because the belief in saints is one of the hallmarks of Roman Catholicism) who have somehow been disconnected from heaven. These saints mysteriously find themselves as mortals on Earth for unknown reasons. Since they are scattered around in different areas, they have to first find each other and try to piece together what has happened and why they are on Earth. Each saint has different powers based on the lives they led. One would be a healer, another would be a preacher, another; a hermit, a warrior, etc. They will have to join together and use their powers to figure out what has happened. Each saint has a missing piece of the puzzle that progresses the story. It turns out that a demon is impersonating an angel and has somehow been able to kick the five saints out of heaven. The five saints he kicked out are the only ones that can expose the demon's plans to influence more selfish acts in the world and help usher in a loveless and ultimately chaotic society. The five saints work together level by level (or chapter by chapter) figuring out what is going on and trying to find a way to stop the demon, while at the same time trying to convince the general public (NPCs) to not listen to him and instead be selfless and loving to others. There will be many difficult moral choices that need to be made that will affect the outcome of the game. There will also be stealth missions, survival missions, evangelical missions and fights that involve the demons' supporters. I can’t really go much more into details without hogging more forum space, so I’ll cut it short and let you know that it’s all awesome and amazing in my head.

Think Splinter Cell, The Sims, Mirror’s Edge, Mass Effect, Kights of the Old Republic, Maniac Mansion, and Shadowgate all rolled into one.

Darksiders definitely doesn't have the cool move possibilities that Mirror's Edge has. Speaking of which I can't wait for the sequel.

  3. @ Iceman

I'd like your idea if it was basically a clone of Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

You got your team of like St. Francis Assisi, Joan of Arc, St. Benedict, and St. Sebastian. But then, St. Sebastian starts getting martyred, so you swap out St. Benedict for St. Anslem of Canterbury to heal your squad.

  4. Aww… I've never played Darksiders or Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Damn, it's so difficult to come up with an original story.

I guess a Spanish Inquisition RTS would be original, though.

  5. @ Iceman

If you've never played Ultimate Alliance, that would be a good one for you and your girl. The co-op is pretty good.
