T-Mobile G2 Review: Photos and Videos

In part one and part two of my T-Mobile G2 (HTC) review, I went over most of the phone’s features. This installment focuses on the photo and video capabilities of this excellent Google Android phone. As far as pictures go, it’s very good. The five-megapixel camera produces crisp shots with great color reproduction if there’s ample light. It can do well indoors with decent light. Low-light settings can be problematic, as the camera’s flash often washes things out. This makes it a poor choice for taking photos while drunk (the Evo 4G is a much better choice for drunk photos).

I took a variety of test shots under various lighting conditions and blood-alcohol levels. Because I love you guys, I made a cute Chinese girl take me out to dinner and model for some photos. Check ’em out!

The camera also takes some nice HD videos. Naturally, the files use an aggressive compression scheme, so the quality isn’t as good as what you’d get on a point-and-shoot camera, but I was pleased with the results. Again, ample light is the key. Here are a bunch of samples so that you can see for yourself.

I was mostly pleased with the G2’s photo and video performance. I wish it had a dual-LED flash for better indoor performance (and better drunk shots) and the stock software could use more features (no touch-to-focus?!?),  but other than that I was satisfied with the image quality and color reproduction. If you have any questions about the G2’s camera, please let me know and I’ll answer ’em in the comments section.

  1. OMG! the flash is horrible. is there any way to adjust the lighting of the flash or is that automatic for low level lighting flash?

      1. are these 3rd party apps available now? have you tried them? i’m not a fandroid so i’m asking these questions on my gf’s behalf, her tech knowledge goes so far.

  2. I went to the Tmo store next to my job to play with the G2 on my lunch break. I want that phone so bad, and that was my first time using FroYo. Today I truly realized that my phone is better than alot of phones but it sucks now after using the G2.

    1. How was it?? I love the look of that phone because it reminds me so much of the nexus one, but I'm not on T-Mobile.

      1. Dude its like the Nexus One on crack. Its faster and it has a full qwerty, I personally think the screen feels better on the G2 as well.

      2. i was going to describe it as if the Nexus One and the Mytouch 3g were to get together and f@$k that this would be the baby phone they would have but i think Nexus one on crack is a better way to describe it.

      1. Yes we do have HSPA+, it was weird walking into the store and seeing the phone displaying a H instead of 3G. I played with it for about 5 minutes (why 5 mins you ask, its because Rpad already gave us the meat and taters of the phone) and was blown away. It feels amazing in my big hands and the screen, oh the screen size is much better than my current phone. I want one and I'm getting one, I just don't know how yet lol.

      2. Cant you have Tmo just add it to your bill? My gf has done that in the past when shes eligible for an upgrade.

      3. As long as your account is in good standing, T-Mo will spread the cost over four bills whether you're eligible for an upgrade or not. So for the G2, it would be $125 extra on the next four bills.

      4. Thanks man I had no idea, I'm on my girl friends account and she is in great standing with them. Now all I have to do is explain to her that while the phone I have is new to me, it isn't a new phone.

      5. I Think you can pull it off. Maybe you can say you'll give her your phone if its better than her current one, if she lets you get a g2.

      6. One solution is to get your current phone unlocked. T-Mo does this for free after 45 days or something. Unlocking the phone gives it more value on eBay. Sell the phone and put it towards your G2.
