T-Mobile G2 OTA Update Adds WiFi Calling and Tethering?

XDA-Forums user Stryf3 claims to have a received an over-the-air update for his/her T-Mobile G2 that adds WiFi calling, WiFi hotspot, and USB tethering features. This would make an already excellent phone even sweeter, especially if T-Mo sticks to its guns and doesn’t add additional charges for tethering and hotspot functionality.

This would make an already excellent phone even sweeter, especially if T-Mo sticks to its guns and doesn’t add additional charges for tethering and hotspot functionality (I’m probably being naive here).

I’ll be checking my G2 all day and will post an update if the update hits my phone.

    My friend/co worker has a MyTouch slide and he is claiming that whenever he is hooked up to wifi that his phone doesn’t use minutes. I thought the G2 is (is going to be) the first Android phone from Tmo with that feature.

  3. I have eying the Archos 101 tablet for Xmas and in that search I read an article about tethering it to my G2, which is awesome, so I started checking around to see when this option was coming or if it was coming.

    After a lot of looking I realized the function could be available. I turned it on, disconnected my desktop from the home wifi and searched for the HotSpot. It hooked up and I ran about 10 speed tests, the slowest being 3.5 MBs/sec, the fastest 4.6, and I would say average was 4.0. Because of the location of my desktop in my house, opposite of the router, the speeds are nearly double of my N-router/DSL hook-up. That is insane.

    Pricing.

    From what I understand, the data plan with Tmobile gives you 5GB, after that the speeds diminish considerably, but it is unlimited. Tmobile hasn't officially released pricing, but seems that you can tether to your regular plan for free, but you only have 5GB of speedy internet, so they will offer the $15 unlimited tethering plan for folks who want more than 5GB/mth. This allows users like me that will tether occasionally to stay in the same price range and users who will tether 100% to pay an additional $15 for unlimited.

    I don't know why, but the fact that I have a Hot Spot in my pants all the time is really cool. Never again will I have to pay a hotel internet charge, find a unlocked Hot Spot for the laptop, or sit at the airport reading the news on my phone when my laptop is in my bag.

    A couple of related Notes.

    1) You can check your data usage at Tmobile. Yo have to manage your your line (if on a family plan). It's in their deep, but once you look at it, it will show up in the minutes/texts usage area.

    2) I live in Houston where HSPA+ is available, I didn't bother trying it with EDGE.

  4. I almost forgot, you can tether using a usb cord or Bluetooth (tablets or other phones). You can also use it as a Hot Spot and use wifi. Not sure, but I would imagine that using the usb cord would be the most efficient use for batteries, then Bluetooth, and the Hotpot the worse.

    It's nice to have 3 options.

  5. Can you tell me exactly how you enabled the G2 tethering ? I have a G2 and an Archos 101 and so far all attempts to tether have failed !

    1. You need to make sure you have the most recent firmware. After that, it's completely obvious. For the Archos, you need WiFi hotspot, not tethering. If your firmware is up to date, you'll find the option in the "wireless and network" settings.
