Android 2.2 (FroYo) on HTC Evo 4G: Impressions and Benchmarks

I’ve been playing around with Android 2.2 on my HTC Evo 4G (Sprint) since last night. It’s pretty impressive so far — everything is snappier, the web browser is faster and has Flash, and there are some nice UI changes (love the ones in Gmail!).

To measure the performance gain, I used GreeneComputing’s Linpack for Android. I tested the Evo 4G before and after the installation of Android 2.2. For comparisons sake, I included the results of a Motorola Droid X running Android 2.1. The results (higher is better) were pretty nuts:

  • Evo 4G (Android 2.1): 4.355 MFLOPs
  • Droid X (Android 2.1): 8.239 MFLOPs
  • Evo 4G (Android 2.2): 37.593

As you can see, FroYo adds a pretty significant boost to performance. While real-world results will not be nine times faster, the speed boost is obvious. I’m going to write more detailed impressions of FroYo on the HTC Evo 4G later this week. Of course I might just sell the phone because the CSRs at Sprint are incompetent…but that’s another story.

  1. I would still root it. Low voltage kernel is worth it in my opinion. I'm waiting a few more days to get more info on iOS4 jailbreak.

  2. I can't wait for this update. I was looking on the innerwebz and the general consensus is it should be hitting the MyTouch by the end of this month. Going from Donut to FroYo is gonna be hella sweet.

  3. just for a laugh i called sprint to see when 2.2 would be available for the hero

yeah, no one knows…i seriously expect it next year, but by then ill be upgraded. Im gonna wait for the next phone with htc sense, as i will never buy a phone without it

What info are you waiting on foe the iOS4 jb? I just dis mine yesterday. I'm liking the new features on iOS4. I love killing apps in multitasking. It's like an addictive new game for me!

at first people were complaining about the mms and face time feature not working but it should work now from what the iphone dev team is saying. i had an issue with mine, where the ipod feature wasn't working, it would pop up and 5 seconds later it would disappear. I just restored my phone and jb it again. all good now. No free wifi apps, they have free trials of them. I used mywi for the 10 day trial, it worked pretty good for my laptop (R.I.P.) but not for my ps3/wii/xbox. I think the signal strength was too low for the consoles to pick it up.
