Coffee Talk #289: What Are Your Gaming Parties Like?

ave you had videogame parties in the past? What games did you play? What’s the best food and drink for videogame parties? Did you encourage drinking and videogame driving?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, your early pick for the Super Bowl, Sid Vicious/Justice getting arrested for pot, or Intelligentsia’s excellent Toarco Jaya Sulawesi Peaberry, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

RPadholic Slickyfats has been having his friends over for videogame parties and it got me wondering about all of your game gatherings. Have you had videogame parties in the past? What games did you play? What’s the best food and drink for videogame parties? Did you encourage drinking and videogame driving?

As for me, most of my videogame parties just happen. Keep in mind that most of my friends are in the videogame business. You get a bunch of us in one place and gaming will happen. Since most of us are decades-long enthusiast-gamers, we stick to casual things like Guitar Hero and Buzz! Quiz World. Playing anything “hardcore” would be like work.

Of course my dream videogame party takes place during a “Full Moon Party” in Ko Pha Ngan. *sigh* Those are so much fun…and they’d be even better with drunken gaming!

Now it’s your turn! Share your videogame party stories (please).

  1. I've had friends over to watch some football and after that we ended up playing Rock Band 2.

  2. We don't have get togethers like that. We might have a few beers and play NBA 2k, but def no casual games. A friend of mine brought his Kinect to a get together, we did not allow him to hook it up to show us Dance Central

  3. @Ray
He's fat and so is his girlfriend. Nobody wanted to see that. Also none of us care about Kinect. We'd rather drink beers instead.

    1. Rerun from What's Happening was fat and he was a superb dancer.

      1. Whoa, whoa whoa. Ray, you just pulled out Rerun from 'What's Happening' as a reply w/out missing a beat. Slick move, sir! I actually remember that show being on when I was a kid.

    1. Perhaps they're brilliant as a duo. Two negatives equal a positive? Kind of like how Derek Jeter's parents are…not so attractive yet they produced a handsome boy.

  4. It's been a while since I have had anything like this happen. I used to have people get together to play Guitar Hero or Family Game night. Ever since my two guitars stopped working it has been a little harder to play.

Other than that we used to get together to play N64, but that wasn't as popular because there were only ever a few of us that really liked playing that system. If I can get some time tonight I might also take a look at the Pokemon League that is supposed to be around here, not exactly a gaming party but a good gathering of people for gaming.

  5. News is that the 3DS will not use accounts to let you redownload games on a new unit. Looks like the Wii's craptastic way is going forward.

      1. That is unfortunate, but I have never seen anything in their DSiware store that has looked remotely appealing. Perhaps this would be more of an issue for me if they had good games (like XBLA has, and how they came out with XBLA style games for WinMo 7). However, with the quality of the games that I would download onto a 3DS I don't see this being a drawback for me personally.

  6. @Ray
It really makes me have 2nd thoughts on buying it. I think I'll hold off a bit longer.

    1. I would love to see some great content come through the online store, but if the DSiWare was any indication then my hopes will not be set too high. It's disappointing that Nintendo is not catching up in this area, especially since I have such high hopes for digital downloads, but it has never been my main reason for wanting a 3DS so I am not too let down.

  7. The Jay Cutler drama has been fun to watch. The Twitterverse railed on him immediately after he was pulled from the game. Now that his MRI results are in, a lot of those some people have buttoned up. It's fascinating how Twitter is being used by athletes and sports writers to make snap judgments on athletes.

    1. I believe Brian Urlacher of the Bears said it best yesterday when he said something to the effect of "gotta love guys sitting on their couch jealous of the fact we're still playing." I thought that pretty much summed it up pretty well, especially living here in AZ and seeing that half the quotes from Twitter on ESPN were being posted by guys that play in the God-awful NFC West.

      1. Yeah he's not exactly my favorite guy in the league either. He has a reputation as being rather aloof as well (to put it kindly). But I watched him get up 8 times in the first half after getting sacked against my Giants earlier this year. It wasn't until the 9th time when his head got slammed to the ground hard that he didn't come back in. He's a tough guy. It's the NFC Championship game. Either he got pulled or he couldn't go. End of story.

      2. I'm a Cutler fan. He won some big games at Vanderbilt. That's pretty big in that conference. I think Chicago needs a few more pieces on their Offense to help him out. WR would be great.

  8. The last time we ever had a gaming get-together was way back in college. Someone brought in their N64 with Super Smash Bros. to our hangout area in the student union building and much cursing and good times ensued.

A couple years later, another guy brought in his Xbox and we would play multiplayer Halo until the building supervisor would kick us out of the building at night. Sometimes, we would invite him to play with us so we could stay later.

    Ah,… memories.

  9. I only have a few gaming friends. More casual then hardcore. So when it comes to video game parties, it ends up being Rock Band or Mario Kart. SSBB if I'm lucky. Now and then I'll get a challange to do Soul Calibur IV.

With hard core gaming friends, they try to coerce me into playing Left For Dead, and other games they have on the 360 since I still don't own one.

But as for recent gaming parties, it's been board games like Cranium, or card games like Magic. Got bored and bought a Scars of Mirrodin fat pack yesterday, even though I bought MTG on psn lol. Oh and I was introduced to the card game "Munchkins" over the weekend. I played it every chance I get. It's even funnier drunk! About 8 shots of liquor in and I forgot what to do lol….

    1. Yeah me and some friends used to play Kill the King when we got together drinking. Ah…how fun and miserable when you pulled the 4th king.
