With the final season of Game of Thrones nearly here, I’ve been rewatching the first seven as a refresher. It’s been fun examining how characters have developed, remembering departed heroes and villains, seeing glorious battles, and chuckling at comedic lines. Out of the first seven seasons, one stood out as my favorite — season four.
Sure, the battle at Castle Black wasn’t as grand as Blackwater or The Battle of the Bastards, but it was still pretty damn entertaining. More importantly, Game of Thrones season four had some of the best moments in the show — both comedic and dramatic — and introduced one of my favorite characters.

Arya and The Hound
Arya Stark’s road trip with “The Hound” Sandor Clegane is one of the very best things in Game of Thrones. The actors, Maisie Williams and Rory McCann, had amazing chemistry. They were also given fantastic material to work with. Their arc had it all — hilarious lines, tender scenes, meaningful character development, and a great sword fight.
Highlights of Arya and The Hound include:
- “What the f*ck’s a Lommy?” and the kind of people that name swords
- The satisfied look on The Hound’s face when he finally gets chickens
- The Hound mocking Arya’s water dancing and her Braavosi teacher
- Arya’s laughter at The Bloody Gate when The Hound’s plan falls apart
- The Hound revealing how his face was scarred
- Arya going from hating Clegane to developing genuine affection for him and The Hound going from Arya’s captor to protector
The Red Viper of Dorne
Oberyn Martell was a wonderful addition to the impressive cast of Game of Thrones. Expertly portrayed by Pedro Pascal, Oberyn was everything you’d expect a Prince of Dorne to be — deadly with a spear, deadlier with his mind, passionate to a fault, and sexually voracious.
Oberyn’s wit and sybaritic lifestyle were charming. At the same time, his palpable hatred for the Lannister family and thirst for avenging his sister, Elia, were frightening. Pascal did a marvelous job at showing the various aspects of Oberyn Martell.
Oberyn telling Tyrion Lannister about their first meeting was a powerful scene. His battle with “The Mountain” Gregor Clegane was fantastic and heartbreaking; the choreography was brilliant, Oberyn reached the cusp of a most satisfying revenge, and it all went horribly wrong in a passion-fueled moment of carelessness.
Joffrey Bites the Dust
Joffrey Lannister Baratheon was one of the most despicable characters in Game of Thrones. He was cruel, sadistic, and idiotic. Watching a cruel, sadistic idiot die was one of the most satisfying scenes in Game of Thrones. It’s a shame the bastard didn’t get to die twice.
