Marvel has unveiled a pair of official trailers for Spider-Man: Homecoming — a US version and an international clip. After a stellar debut in Captain America: Civil War, everyone’s favorite superhero with the proportional strength and agility of a spider is set for an all-new, all-different (and all-rebooted) solo film. Although most fanboys were delighted by Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man in Civil War, the character has an uneven cinematic history, which made some fans temper their excitement with caution. If the trailers (embedded below for your convenience) are any indication, that caution is unnecessary. The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers just feels right.
Naturally, it’s time for some random thoughts on the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers using the RPadTV binary system. Let’s do this!
The Tone (Good): The tone of the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer feels right, particularly the US version. Peter Parker is a kid. This time around, he’s being played by an actual kid (Holland is 20). This particular Spider-Man is still finding his legs. He’s had some adventures, but he has a lot to prove in a cinematic universe world filled with established heroes. I love the “rookie” aspect of the character. I also love that he looks and acts like a typical high-school dork. One of the most appealing aspects of Spider-Man is that he’s a nerd that many readers can identify with. The US trailer captures the innocence, newness, and nerdiness of Spidey nicely.
The Tony (Good): Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s nice to see him lend a repulsor-ray-powered hand to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Robert Downey, Jr. and Holland had a fantastic vibe in Civil War, and I can’t wait for their upcoming banter in Homecoming. It’s cool that Tony Stank Stark and Iron Man will have roles in the movie. On a side note, what did you think of the Spider-Man logo in Iron Man’s colors at the end of the international trailer?
The Vulture (Good): The Vulture looks shockingly awesome in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer. In the comics, he was always one of Spidey’s lamer villains. Let’s face it, a balding senior citizen in a crap costume doesn’t exactly strike fear in the hearts of superheroes. This version of the Vulture is surprisingly scary in a Decepticon kind of way. The suit looks like it could do some serious damage. Best of all, Michael Keaton is underneath the suit (suspend your disbelief). While I’ve always enjoyed his comedic chops, he’s great at playing psychopaths too. He can be chilling when he goes to that dark place. Many nerds believe that villains make the hero in comic-book movies. With Keaton to play off of, Holland has a great chance of making something memorable.
The Shocker (Bad): The Shocker looks surprisingly effective too. While this fits in with the movie, I’m a little disappointed with the characterization. Yeah, it makes sense for him to be a “real” bad guy, but I was sorta kinda of hoping for the hapless idiot version of Shocker from the Ultimate Spider-Man books. That way the movie would have a joke villain and one that’s an actual threat.
Hot Aunt May is Hot (Good): While the trailers only offered a glimpse of Aunt May, a few seconds of Marisa Tomei make any trailer better. That’s just science.
Bottom Line: The Marvel Cinematic Universe looks like it’ll have another amazing sensational spectacular year in 2017. The trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 looks brilliant and Spider-Man: Homecoming looks nearly as fun. While Sony’s previous Spidey movies had their moments, I’m greatly looking forward to his first solo adventure in the MCU.
