Coffee Talk #558: What 2013 Nerd Movies Will You See?

My friend Paul and I were talking about 2013 movie releases. After spouting out a bunch of movies we wanted to see, we were surprised by the number of nerd movies scheduled for release this year. Fans of comic books, sci-fi, and fantasy have so much to look forward to. Here are some of the films we were talking about:

  • GI Joe: Retaliation
  • Iron Man 3
  • Man of Steel
  • The Wolverine
  • Thor: The Dark Worlds
  • Star Trek: Into the Darkness
  • Kick Ass 2
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

That list doesn’t even count the mainstream movies that are also loved by geeks, such as…more

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Australian Open, Lance Armstrong’s upcoming confession, or Britney Spears being single again, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I’m not saying that all of these movies are going to be great or even good, but I’m pleased that there are so many nerd-friendly blockbusters being released this year.

What 2013 movies are you anxious to see? Are there any big-budget films that you’re wary of? Are there any nerd movies you’re high on that I didn’t mention? Let’s plot out our 2013 moviegoing in the comments section (please)!

  1. I’m probably going to see all the ones listed at some point or another. Maybe with the exception of The Hobbit since this last movie failed to capture my attention.

I think Pacific Rim might be sufficiently geeky, but other ones that interest me are that I feel fall into the realm of “geeky”:

    Die Hard 5
    Jobs
    Evil Dead
    Lone Ranger
    Red 2
    Machete Kills
    Sin City 2
    Hunger Games 2

There are others, but those seem to be the ones (plus the the ones you mentioned) that seem to have the biggest geek factors too them. 2013 is making it blatantly obvious that Hollywood has completely invaded Comic Con for the last several years and have yet to bleed it completely dry.

    1. Totally forgot about Sin City 2 and I didn’t know that Jobs was this year. Great adds! Pacific Rim is definitely geeky. Paul and I talked about it, but it slipped my mind when I was writing the column.

    2. All of that u mentioned n8 and Rpad but also Oblivion is another one for me; also Stoker, Snitch, and Carrie.

    3. I saw the red band trailer for Evil Dead and I thought to myself: “What f*%#ed-up-in-the-head person would actually pay money and get enjoyment out of this sick, twisted, disturbing gore-fest?

And this is coming from someone who thinks “Army of Darkness” is a classic.

  2. Like most years I look at the upcoming movies and say “I’ll see about 10 of the new films this year” and then I never get around to it and wait for iTunes or some other form of iMac viewing.

I’m interested in Pacific Rim since at first glance it made me think about Neon Genesis Evangelion.

So I’ll take your list plus N8’s minus Hunger Games 2.

Lagniappe: I’m definitely more interested in the new Die Hard now that it carries an R rating but the premise still sounds stupid. I don’t care about his kids!

  3. I may end up seeing a couple of those like Iron Man 3 and Sin City 2, but the movies I am interested in this year are (in no particular order):

    Monsters University
    Oz the Great and Powerful
    Riddick
    Thor 2

Even those I probably won’t see in theaters (except Oz the Great and Powerful) so who knows what I will actually watch in theaters.

    1. Awesome call on Monsters U. Paul and I mentioned that too. Monsters is my second-favorite Pixar movie. Really excited for the prequel.

      1. Ratatouille is the only Pixar movie I haven’t seen and Monsters, Inc. is my favorite. I think the website they did for Monsters U is pretty impressive as well. Definitely looking forward to this movie.

      2. It is definitely underrated, but I happen to think that is because a couple other Pixar movies are overrated (Up, Wall-E). The Incredibles is definitely good, but it didn’t feel as unique as my other Pixar favorites (Monsters, Inc., A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo). Brave felt the same way to me too. The huge redeeming quality for that movie is that I felt it gave young girls a great role model when compared to other animated films.

      3. I think Brave would have done better if the commercials had made sense – it’s an original title, so nobody knows what the conflict will be. The ads played up the internal conflict without showing much action, even though there was plenty to show off.

      4. Nobody seemed to know what the movie was supposed to be about until after they were finished watching. Even now when I see commercials for it they do not seem to make much sense. I would agree that Brave most likely would have done better if the commercials had made more sense, but also if the content of the story was a little stronger. I’ve seen it once and don’t feel the need to see it again because it was a rather bland story compared to other Pixar films. Most people I’ve talked to seem to feel the same way. I still maintain that it’s redeeming quality is giving girls a more positive role model, but it would’ve helped if the film was more solid.

      5. You need to stop whatever it is you are doing and see Ratatouille right now. Seriously; go!

Also, I think we have exact opposite tastes in Pixar movies. I never cared much for “Monsters, Inc.” or “A Bug’s Life”, while “Up” and “Wall-E” were probably two of my top five favorites. “The Incredibles”, however, is an excellent movie.

        Anyway; Ratatouille-… GO!

      6. It looks like the three of us are all over the place with Pixar. Like you, I loved Up. The nonverbal scene in the beginning was amazing. Unlike bsuperstar, I didn’t think much of Finding Nemo. I think it’s better than Cars, but that’s about it.

      7. I think Cars is the weakest movie Pixar has made so far. The best part of the movie was Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers making an appearance.

      8. Definitely agree there. I feel like the movie suffered from a lack of external conflict – besides the two races at the start and end, all of the conflict was emotional or mental. Without a physical obstacle, there wasn’t enough tension throughout the movie, and the movie felt boring.

      9. I will have to watch that soon then. I don’t know if I have a copy of that in my collection of movies, but I will work on getting it so I can check it out. If nothing else I will have then seen all of Pixar’s movies.

“A Bug’s Life” I can see how you wouldn’t like, as I feel a lot of people pass over it now. But I don’t see how people cannot like “Monsters, Inc.”

      10. If I was picking a Top 5 Pixar list, I’d probably end up with a list like this (no particular order):
        Up
        The Incredibles
        Monsters, Inc.
        Toy Story 3
        Ratatouille

  4. Star Trek and Iron Man 3 are the only real “must see” movies for me this year, but going to the movies now is a rare thing for me now. The only two movies I saw last year in theaters was The Avengers and Dark Knight Rises.

  5. I have to add Oblivion and After Earth. I tend to like both of these actors and hope they can make my favorite genre of scifi a pleasant experience. I’m weary of After Life due to Shyamalan directing but I trust Smith.

Also Oz the Great and Powerful and the new Riddick movie.
