Wednesday Housekeeping: Comments and Tweaks

More changes have been implemented into RPad.TV 3.0! More content, including images and videos, shows up on the front page. There’s a nifty menu bar at the top of the screen. The social media bar now floats on the left of the screen instead of under posts (it appears in individual posts only). Please let me know how you feel about these or any of the new features.

The biggest addition from last night was adding Disqus 2012 comments. On paper, your old comments should return some time this evening. However, I’ve never had a positive experience with comment importing/exporting, so I have zero faith that it’ll happen smoothly or as scheduled. Let’s see. On the plus side, Disqus 2012 has lots of cool features. Kindly play around with the commenting system if you have some time today.

    1. Comment counts don’t work on the mobile version. I’m thinking about scrapping the mobile version since this theme scales to devices, but I like the speed of the mobile version. What do you think?

Reply via email requires a proper Disqus account, I believe.

      1. I honestly only defaulted to mobile version exclusively due to the IntenseDebate bug with my iPhone. Otherwise I used the desktop version of the site….unless ATT throttled me or denied 3G service..then I used the mobile version.

The new layout scales very well so I’d do away with mobile.

For the desktop version I’d increase the font size on the article title and the line directly beneath with post date and comment count. A little squinty on my 27inch iMac.

  1. Ok, after two weeks of these changes, I have a few suggestions for your consideration:

    1) I liked the “dual column” format that you had before. It allowed us to see more articles on one page at a time. The downside of this is obviously that each article has a smaller preview section, but at least it prevents me from having to click the “previous posts” button so many times. Which leads me to:

    2) The “Previous posts” and “next posts” buttons at the bottom of the pages (after the second page) should be switched. On most forum sites, the link to go to the newer posts are on the left and the link to go to the older posts are on the right side.

    3) … damn. I forgot what I was going to say. Well, when I think of it, I’ll post it here.

      1. O.K., I got it. The third thing is the web browser problem. Only one of the three web browsers I use (Chrome) is able to see this site perfectly. The other two (IE & Safari) have issues. These issues mostly stem from the Disqus comments loading and/or not appearing at all.

I know you think IE is garbage, but people still use it. Try using this site (and the Disqus) comments with other browsers to see if you run into the same problems.

It might just be me. I don’t know.

      2. I use the site with Chrome, FF, and Safari daily. The only problems I see are with the front page slider, but that should be fixed shortly.

Fun numbers for you: 45.6% of this site’s visitors use Chrome, while 9.2% use IE.
