Coffee Talk #467: Your Favorite Game of Q1 2012

The first quarter of 2012 has ended and I wanted to hear about your favorite games of 2012. Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the hot crowd for Monday Night Raw in Miami, Minka Kelly’s downgrade, or the countdown to MLB opening day, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The first quarter of 2012 has ended and I wanted to hear about your favorite games of 2012. While I’ve been loving Final Fantasy Tactics on my iPad, my favorite and most surprising game of the quarter was Final Fantasy XIII-2. I enjoyed the original, flaws and all. The sequel tightens up the gameplay and story (though it’s still a bit ridiculous in that FF way), and adds several new twists. I absolutely loved the monster collecting and breeding system in FFXIII-2. In many ways, it’s the same kind of fun as Pokemon catching and training. I knew I’d enjoy XIII-2, but I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. Plus…Serah in a bikini!!!

Now it’s your turn. What was your favorite game of Q1 2012?

  1. The only game that I have from this quarter is Shank 2 the arcade game on xbl. It's a fun 2d beat em up that reminds me of Comic Zone.

  2. I'd have to go with SSX, as that and Syndicate are the only two games I've played from this Q.

  3. The PS Vita's BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Extend, due to the easy(er) fighting controls and such an in-depth story. WITH COMPLETE VOICE ACTING! Yeah, it's that awesome. Plus, loads of unlockable content, so I'm still playing even after I finished it.

And I'm just putting this out there now: Favorite game of Q2 will be Gravity Rush, also for the Vita. If you have a PS Vita, buying this one is a must.

  4. The only new games I've played have been fighting games and I didn't enjoy them much to buy them. So far ff13-2 would be one I can say I'd consider buying but I'm still playing catch up with games.

  5. Very few games have been good at all this year.

    Good:
    Darkness 2
    Gotham City Imposters

    Meh:
    Twisted Metal X
    SSX
    Shoot Many Robots
    Shank 2
Canabalt (has lots of replay value on a boring day at work on a PC, but not worth $3 on a PS3)

    Crap:
Journey (no demo, wasted $15. Nothing fun about this "game". Not even as nice looking as made out to be. Don't waste your time.)
    Neverdead
    RE: Operation Raccoon City
    Syndicate
    Binary Domain
    Mass Effect 3

  6. My sister just dumped Mass Effect 1 and 2 on me because my brother-in-law is currently on 3. She said that he'd lend it to me after he's done with it, but I am extremely apprehensive about even touching an epic RPG such as Mass Effect since those games are temporal black holes.

I have trouble putting down a game if I'm really into it and the last thing I want to do is get myself into a situation where either child services are called or my wife is filling out the divorce papers. If this trilogy would have come out years ago when I was single and living at home, I would have been all over it. Now, I wouldn't get five minutes into it before a feeding or house-hold chore would get in the way.

How the hell do you do it?

    1. Do those chores during the elevator scenes in the first one. In the 2nd ditch biotics and go straight up assault rifle.

I wish I could have killed Jack. I hate that character.
