Coffee Talk #445: Solar Flares, Super Powers, and You

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, RIM’s new CEO, Mitt Romney’s tax returns, or the third Olsen sister, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Radiation from the largest solar flare in six years will be hitting planet Earth today. This, of course, means that many of us will be getting new super powers. Some of the effects will be immediate, while others will see their powers manifest over a longer period of time. Since a number of us are about to become Übermensch, I thought it would be a great time to discuss the superhero powers of your dreams.

As for me, I’m going to go with Wonder Man’s ionic powers. The dude is pretty much immortal and invulnerable since he’s made of ionic energy. Not having to eat, drink, or breathe is handy too — super useful for apocalyptic events and alien invasions. And to be completely honest, this choice is mostly derived from picking up Peter David’s underrated My Fair Super Hero from the discount rack at the comic-book store recently.

Now it’s your turn! As your body is bombarded with an unusually high amount of solar radiation today, what kind of super powers are you hoping to get?

    1. You would either be a thief, or the money would be counterfeit and useless. Economics only works when there's a finite amount of currency, so it would have to disappear from somewhere else to appear in front of you, or you would have to make more… Which is counterfeiting.

So, I say you don't need cosmic rays, you need a good printer, scanner, and the right paper and inks. Or, you could apply for credit cards under stolen identities. Regardless, with this power, there is no way around not being a villain. So like Ray said, I'd just go with mind control. That way, you could convince the filthy rich to give what they could never spend to the poor (ourselves included) and thus be a hero.

  1. Well, I would be a hypocrite if I didn't say I would like the ability to generate ice from the surrounding moisture in the air and manipulate it at will, so I'm going to say that I would like my superpower to be the ability to generate ice from the surrounding moisture in the air and manipulate it at will. Somehow, I doubt a solar flare or radiation will give me this power.

Also, I have learned that anything that Peter David writes is amazing. He is my favorite fiction author. I remember reading Star Trek: New Frontier and thinking; "Why hasn't Rick Berman given this guy a [Star Trek] series yet?!"

    1. Peter David and Mark Waid are probably my favorite comic-book writers of the last 15 years. They're both great storytellers that combined humor and heart in a unique way.

      1. Seriously though, after doing a tad of research, Franklin Richards and that Anthony kid from the "It's A Good Life" episode of Twilight Zone are startlingly similar.

    1. Oh, you mean Daniel X. What, wrong person? Ah well, same power. Well, that is, the power to create anything (and "put away" anything you create).

  2. I want invulnerablity, immortality, eternal youth, and the power to bestow my power to others permanently. My super villains will all be ex girlfriends though…

  3. I would want to have Nightcrawler like abilities. Moving like that would be awesome, and that power could be used for good or evil. Hopefully these powers start taking affect soon as I would like to get acclimated with them as soon as possible (and I have to fight to continue the Muerta family legacy if I choose evil over good, lol).

  4. Which superhero has telepathic, psychic and precognitive powers? Cause that's who I'd want to be. So, the ability to read minds, communicate telepathically, move and affect things with my mind, and seeing into the future. Being invisible sounds nice at first, but imagine how difficult it is for them to fight crime on an active street.

    And NO CAPES!

      1. I anticipated that one. But does it have to be a girl?

Hmmm….. Professor Xavier! (though I don't think he has pre-cognition)

      2. I mean, not only does he have telepathy and psychic abilities, but he also knows how to fly spaceships and use phasers!

    1. Emporor Palpatine.

If you can manipulate minds, you can alter the optic nerves pathways and virtually render yourself invisible to whichever subject you wish to not appear to.

      1. How did Doctor Douche get to be so douche-like?

I need an origin story, is what im saying

      2. Emperor Palpantine has a cape, and Mr. Lunias clearly said "NO CAPES!" You may argue that it is technically a "cloak", but I'll just say that it's a fancy cape with a hood.

And let's face it, he wouldn't look nearly as bad-ass without out it.

  5. Kingdoms of Amalur on PC is a no buy for me. The demo is so buggy, I'd hate to waste money on the final product. After character creation the gfx engine fails. Pretty big bug even for a demo.

      1. ::Shrug:: At the end of the day, you'd think they'd want a solid build in front of as many people as possible. But the whole Origin/Steam issue is an interesting one…..
