Coffee Talk #444: Your (Initial) Super Bowl XLVI Prediction

The teams for Super Bowl XLVI are set! It’s that classic East Coast battle of the New England Patriots taking on the New York (Football) Giants. While the AFC and NFC Championship games are still fresh on your minds, I wanted to hear your initial picks for the Super Bowl. Who are you picking? What’s your spread? Who’s…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Red Sox pursuit of Roy Oswalt, watching Moneyball over and over again, or wishing you were on an airplane, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

While the AFC and NFC Championship games are still fresh on your minds, I wanted to hear your initial picks for the Super Bowl. Who are you picking? What’s your spread? Who’s going to have a break-out game? Who’s going to choke?

Of course this topic will be revisited in early February, but I wanted to get your gut feelings after yesterday’s games. So have at it (please)!

  1. While I was happy to see both Rodgers and Jim Harbaugh devastated by Eli, I'm pulling for Brady to get his 4th. Eli is a little punk.

    1. Smartguy's just upset. I know Alex Smith has had 7 different Offensive Coordinators with the 49ers, but it's just not acceptable to lose a playoff game to "Playbook on his Wrist" guy.

      1. But going to overtime and being a c-hair away from a loss IS acceptable?

The problem is, you aren't accounting for the D. Terry Bradshaw proved 35 years ago that you can be mediocre with a great D and still win rings.

      2. So… It DOES matter if you win or lose regardless of how you play the game?

My old little league coach would make you run a lap for that.

  2. I gotta go with the G-men. I found out the hard way that rooting for the Pats makes me feel guilty. I hate those bastards.

    1. You and me both, but I've been hating the Pats before it was cool.

I could care less what team wins. I just want it to be a great game and not a blowout either way. I am grateful for the Giants preserving the Dolphins' perfect season record, so that is a reason to side with New York, but on the other hand, Tom Brady is my franchise QB in my fantasy league (that I just happened to win this year) and I've grown attached to him over the years since he has single-handedly made my fantasy team competitive every year I've had him. So, I typically like it when he does well (except when they play Miami).

Then again… Dolphins and Patriots don't mix well. It's kind of like adding vinegar to baking soda or Smartguy at an Atlanta Falcons home game.

      1. I hear ya.

Hey… When you start Portal 2 and want the coop achievements, let me know. I want them too and may be willing to wait.

      2. Hey, now! Hold on a second. What makes you think that would even want to chase after the co-op achievements like some kind of whore that wastes entirely too much time chasing after pointless achievements?

But, yeah, seriously, my wife has first dibs on the co-op (if we ever find the time) and then Bsukenyan asked to do co-op as well, but I'll go at it with you as well since both of you guys are rarely on at the same time (funny how you're on when he's not… it's almost like mild-mannered Bsukenyan is really SuperN8 in disguise- except, you're the one that wears the glasses). Portal 2 the next game I'm planning on playing after I'm done with The Sims 3 (and Arkham City).

  3. As I've noted before, my mother's side of the family are all Red Sox and Patriots fans, which makes my being a Yankees and Giants fan a bit awkward at family gatherings. During that 7 year run when the Red Sox and or Pats were winning championships every year, being around them was unbearable. After the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, I didn't hear from any of them for about a month and a half. If the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl again, they may never talk to me again.

    1. So outstanding. Doing a great job of generating heat without saying much of anything. The writers must love him for getting huge reactions without getting in the way of current storylines.

  4. The giants are clearly the better team this year.

I read that the patriots only have 7 players on their roster that were on their super bowl roster 4 years ago. Thats pretty amazing.

  5. And i'll say it here too, since obviously you didnt see it in the last coffee talk

    Nate, happy birthday (belated)

I remember because you are exactly 2 months older than i am :)

    1. Believe me, there isn't single pro Giants pick by any of the "experts" that doesn't make me feel like it's a jinx. And too many of these so called experts appear to have jumped on the bandwagon.
