Best Movie of 2011

For me, 2011 wasn’t a great year for movies. I enjoyed a bunch of superhero flicks like Captain America and Thor, but I’m still haunted by the craptacular failure that was Green Lantern. As a huge mark for the comics, the movie was the most traumatizing film I’ve seen in years. 15 minutes of cool outer-space sequences didn’t make up for all the garbage that took place on Earth. I’m still pained that Ryan Reynolds made Hal Jordan look like a tool. Ugh.

When I can block out the painful memories of Green Lantern, the movie I enjoyed the most this year was Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The special effects were impressive. Andy Serkis and James Franco were fantastic. Freida Pinto didn’t get to show off her talents, but I enjoyed staring at her. The writing was strong. And lastly, the scenes in San Francisco made me miss the second city I considered home. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is much smarter than your typical summer blockbuster movie. I didn’t see a ton of movies this year, but this was clearly the best one.

Now it’s time for your picks! What was your favorite movie of 2011?

  1. I enjoyed RotPoA, the Muppets, and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The worse movie for me was Immortals.

    1. Huh, same with me. I actually think I didn't watch any movies at all this year. Which is weird, considering the great amount of decent-or-better superhero movies. Thor, Captain America, etc etc.

    2. Funny. I think Thor was the ONLY movie I watched this year in the theaters.

Pregnancy and a newborn will curb most of your theater time, I've learned.

      -M

  2. Yeah, I agree with Planet of the Apes. I also really liked the Help though. I like staring at Evan Rachael Wood. I saw her in at least 2 things this year and she played a total bitch in both of them.

I haven't seen a few contenders, but I'll catch up before the oscars.

  3. Seriously, I think that Harry Potter and Captain America were the only non-"kid" movies I actually saw in the theater this year. We just don't have a reliable sitter for the wife and I to go out much. :(

  4. Best movie this year hands down was Avatar! Just kidding, that easily goes to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Read what Rpad says of the movie in order to avoid redundancy.

  5. I was totally disappointed by the Hangover 2. but there were a few decent comedies this year. Brides maids was good. as was Bad Teacher…Im gonna go with Horrible bosses as my favorite movie this year., i really enjoyed the cast and there were some pretty good laughs there. All in all, a down year for movies in general this year, IMO

In all fairness, i havent seen 30 minutes or less, the change-up or the Muppets yet….so, this could change
