Coffee Talk #429: Giving Your Kids Videogame Names

Would you name your child after a videogame character? Maybe a game designer? How about someone from a comic book? Or just straight up naming him Casper Van Dien? I’m totally down with this. Should I be blessed with a daughter, I plan to name her…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, where Chris Paul will be playing, why the hell its below 50 in Los Angeles, or your toothpaste of choice, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Would you name your child after a videogame character? Maybe a game designer? How about someone from a comic book? Or just straight up naming him Casper Van Dien? I’m totally down with this. Should I be blessed with a daughter, I plan to name her Tifa, after the strong-but-gentle woman from Final Fantasy VII. If I have a son, I’d like to name him Shigeru, after legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Twin boys? That’s easy! They’d be Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent.

Now it’s your turn! Would you name your kids after videogame characters, comic-book heroes, or game designers? If so, what would you name your son, daughter, or twins?

  1. This is no different than naming your child after a celeb, only thing is these people are certified nerds and are in. s niche celebrity corner. Having said that I would (that is me, not my gf) name my boy Sephiroth, girl would be named Lisa (after a dead friend) and twins would be The Incredible Hulk Ruelas and Spiderman Ruelas.

  2. Gargamel. Guaranteed the kid will be able to fight. Hopefully built like me so he'll be able to prize fight in heavy classes

    1. What? You'd name your kid after the main Smurf villain or are you talking about that Norwegian band?

  3. This is no joke, but when my wife got pregnant and we started discussing baby names, we were in total agreement that if we had a daughter we'd name her Rinoa, after the female lead in FFVIII. We had a son, so it didn't happen. My wife's got back problems (as in 3 slipped discs, one of which burst and required surgery), so we're probably done having kids, which means it ain't gonna ever happen.

  4. I named my son after an undead slasher with a machete and a hockey mask…. not really, but it is the same name.

We actually named our kids after friends and family whose influence led to my wife and I's union. Our son's first name is the guy who dragged me to the place we met and his middle name is the guy who actually introduced us. My daughter's first name is my wife's aunt who was murdered. It was that experience that caused my wife to want to get far away from California and brought her to Pittsburgh. My daughter's middle name is my mom.

If we have more kids (knock on wood), who knows.

    1. One of your kids has to be named Big Blak and I'll return the favor by naming my kid whatever I want.

      1. Yeah, a scrawny, lean, whiteboy named Big Blak… I may just have the balls to do it.

But then, you'd have to name your kid after my dad… his name was Delbert. You better teach him how to play the blues too.

  5. My mom gave me the middle name Thor. I like it, friends usually think its cool. If I had a daughter I like the name Leliana, from Dragon Age.

  6. Possible on the list:

    Male:
    >Kane (Command and Conquer)
    >Fenix (Starcraft)
    >Arthas (Warcraft)
    >Rintarou (Steins;Gate)
    >Levant (Hexyz Force)

    Female:
    >Shurelia (Ar tonelico 1)
    >Aurica (Ar tonelico 1)
    >Tillia (Ar tonelico 3)
    >Irisviel (Fate/Zero)

  7. You know, now that I think about it; my son's name is actually the name of a Playstation 2 game. I didn't name him after the game (hell, I didn't even play the game), but he does share the same name as the protagonist of the game.

I should really get around to playing that game one day to see if it's any good. If it isn't, I might have to change my kid's name to something more respectable like Link.

  8. I think I mentioned it once but if I had twin boys id call them mas y menos. The mother of my kids can name them whatever but if they're twin boys that's what I'm calling them regardless. I still havent decided on anything else besides that.

  9. I have thought about this before, but I can never decide on what game to name kids after. It would have to be a game I played, but there aren't any cool names in my games. The only one I could actually think to name a son is Ash. After that I get stuck with discovering names.

      1. Actually Red is a much better character then Ash. Red is a serious competitor; Ash is just a whiny little kid who gets extremely lucky from the anime series. Charizard is a cooler name, yes, but it's not so easy to go through life with your first name being that of arguably one of the most famous pokemon of all time (coffee talk? haha). Also, I'm just assuming this since I haven't actually met anyone who has been named after a pokemon.

    1. Well, I have to say is that personally, I think that hiring her for her services is just about the closest thing a guy can do heterosexually while not actually crossing the border into gay.

She's kind of in that gray, in-between area where you’re not entirely sure…

  10. I finally thought of a name for a boy that is video game/comic based. Logan. I couldn't pick an uber white name, because that would just lead him to some unneeded ridicule later in life, and I think Logan would work out pretty well. Also, my wife has no clue it's Wolverine's name. I don't plan on telling her until after our son is at least 1 (whenever that happens).

Ray, your comment to Iceman about choosing TMNT over X-Men Arcade is what reminded me of this.
