This Week’s Videogame Releases (Uncharted 3!!!)

Huge week for PlayStation 3 fans as Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception brings the noise. PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers get an updated version of a James Bond classic in Goldeneye 007: Reloaded. If you’d rather enjoy combat with swords and shields instead of guns then take a trip to Middle-Earth in Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Sega’s iconic hedgehog is back in Sonic Generations. Capping things off are two Konami games with outstanding names. Otomedius Excellent wins on its name alone. Jimmie Johnson’s Anything With an Engine cracks me up every time I hear the name since in my head it’s Jimmie Johnson’s Anything With a Pulse.

Any of you picking up new games this week?

  1. Pass… for now.

The Nightwing DLC for Arkham City comes out tomorrow and I need to solidify some achievements. It also has 2 maps with it. I'm there.

      1. I knew that and posted it last week. I guess no one pays attention to my posts :/
The extended cut is a little better I haven't noticed anything different than the beginning, also the extras are awesome

      2. I preordered all 5 available on Xbox. I get them Dec. 6.

That 70's one is the one I want the most. Unfortunately, the 70's skin is the comic book Batman and not Adam West. I would pay $30 for an Adam West skin.

There should be a whole DLC mode that changes every character's skin to both the Animated Series and 60's TV Batman. The Tim Burton movies would be cool, but I fear the batnips.

      3. you guys are really making me want to buy that game, but i have the first arkham game

      4. I'm planning on buying The Sims 3 and Portal 2 through Amazon soon and I wanted to know if you get any benefit from people using the links through your site or not.

        -M

      5. Let me know when you want to play Portal 2 online (and when you can use your account online again). I need someone to help me with a couple achievements in co-op, and you might find it easier to just play through the game with one person in co-op rather than trying to find someone random online like I did.

      6. Sure, I don't see why not, but my wife gets first dibs. We haven't played a game together since Lara Croft: Guardian of Light and she's getting kind of peeved with me playing all these single player games that she finds boring.

        -M

      7. Done! I even impulse-bought Plants vs. Zombies since it was cheap and I think my wife might like it. I'll give her all three games and say it's for Christmas and get it out of the way.

And… yeah, I'm glad you let me know that, because I would have never guessed that Blue Lantern Corps reference. Hell, I didn't even know The Blue Lantern Corps even existed. I'm just going to assume that every color of the rainbow has their own "Lantern Corps" that way, I won't be surprised when you say; "Did you know that The Fuchsia Lantern Corps are more powerful than the Indigo Lantern Corps?" Silly me for thinking that The Khaki Lantern Corps were the most powerful ones of all. I mean, c’mon, they have the power of the Khaki Lantern, but instead of rings, they get their power from their Lantern belt buckles.

      8. Be sure to play the single player. It really is a flawless game. It is one of the few rare perfect 10 scores I'd give to a game. I honestly can't think of a game this gen that surpasses it. SMG is great, but not in Portal 2's league.

Coffee Talk idea maybe? Only 2 other games in the last 10 years are as good in my opinion.

      9. I was hesitant to get it for the Xbox since I enjoyed the first Portal on my PC at work… but that was before I was married and had a kid. I can't really stay at work late playing games anymore and the "building a new PC at home" money has to go M junior's future edjumacation fund. So it's either play Portal 2 through Boot Camp on the laptop or play it on the big screen with my wife. It's a no-brainer.

You know maybe if Kris spent a little time playing a co-op game with Kim, they would have probably lasted for more than 72 days.

      10. Funny you mention that. His cousin is an avid golfer (at five years old) and one of my best friends and his brother have their own tennis school.

        Maybe this is a sign.

      11. @ You and SG

I want to ask your opinions on this because both of you are good with money management.

What do you think the future of a trust fund is? I'm going to be coming into some SERIOUS money in the next 5-7 years because my family sold the coal rights to 130 acres that I own a quarter of. I want to secure my kids education but I have little faith in banks given the current economy. I sure as hell don't want to mess with the stock market.

I'm definitely gonna buy some gold and land too, but I would like to live off of interest if I can. Opinions?

      12. A trust fund is used to hold assets. They are quite complex in nature but generally can be broken down into Revocable and Irrevocable. Irrevocable is where you are liable for tax liability, whereas the beneficiary is on the hook in a revocable. You can put any asset into a trust. Trusts are ran by a board of trustees and are managed as a fund or similar business depending on the assets in trust.

Income from a trust is on your income. So being put into a new tax bracket by income you or the beneficiary does not realize is a possibilty in addition to also carrying forward a loss.

The cool thing about these are the gifts you can give. Let's say you want to give your children a pile of cash tax free every year. You can simply overpay quarterly taxes and they will receive it as a refund in the free and clear at tax time.

If you want to invest, I can't give you great insight there. I don't think you can live off of current interest rates

      13. Wow. Why don't you just ask me what the meaning of life is? I think it would be easier to answer. Ha, ha, no, but seriously, I won't have time to answer this in depth because I'm at work right now and I have a character limit on IE's browser, so I'll give you the short version before expanding on it when I get home (or maybe Smartguy can elaborate on what I'm going to say). There are a few things I would do if I came into big money (remember, this is just me):

        (continued)…

      14. 1. Set up a living revocable trust.
        2. Take out a term life insurance policy to protect your wife and kids.
        3. You should have a will as well.
        4. The goal would be to live off the interest from the capital sum (principal) without touching it. For example; if you can live off $5,000/month, then you need your principal to generate $60,000/year in interest. So, if you inherit $1 million, you need to earn 6%/year on it without touching the original million. Your interest you earn on the principal would be like an annuity.
        5. Stay away from annuities.
        6. There is no such thing as a "safe investment".
        7. Stay away from government bonds for the near future.
        8. Real estate is going nowhere for at least the next few years, but you could invest in property if it produces income for you (i.e., a shopping center, apartment building, or a coal mine, etc.) but you'd have to do your homework to see if it's worth it because of the cost.
        9. Personally, I'm big on (physical) gold and silver and my wife on high-yield, dividend-paying stocks from blue chip companies (also, ETFs with no or low load).

        -M

      15. Awesome… I greatly appreciate it, and remember that this is about 5-7 years from now.

        1. That seems to be the plan so far, but I don't know as much as I should about the different kinds of trusts. I have some time to learn though.
        2. I got one for the kids, but for the Mrs. and I is a good idea.
        3. I was gonna worry about that after I actually had something to will.
        4. That's about right, I just need to find the way to earn the right rate.
        5. I was already there with you.
        6. Believe me… I'm well aware of that. But if I don't invest at all, then I'm guaranteed to squander it.
        7. I'm already there with you too.
        8. Right… but now is the time to buy, especially commercial real estate in Southern California. I know the rates due to my last "real" job working for a commercial broker. When the big one hits, where I am at now will be the spot to own commercial, and it's gonna be cheap for probably the next 8-10 years at least. Commercial is where my brain is, but if I can work out some acreage for less than $100k (which is all over the place now, there's 68 about 5 miles from me for $30k right now) and then subdivide it and build track homes, I'm down for that too.
        9. Gold especially, and it's not just right now either. When I was in junior high I noticed that all the ghetto drug dealers I knew rocked these massive gold chains (it wasn't a hard observation). But then I noticed how seriously these same people regarded their gold, and I asked myself why. I realized that they can't use banks and they can sell that chain for what they bought it for or more hands down and it doesn't reflect towards income. Then I found out what the Fed Reserve is, and years later I saw Cowboys and Aliens and I now know that aliens want our gold too. Gold is only going up, but silver I'm sketchy about considering that it might be in a massive bubble based on JP Morgan artificially inflating the HELL out of the market many moons ago.

Seriously, thank you very very much, If we are still doing this when it all comes down, don't be surprised if I fly you and SG out to Pittsburgh and pay you for your time as well. Not to mention awesome gaming sessions and the finest entertainment the Steel City can offer (which isn't saying alot… but the food is amazing).

      16. If possible, pay off your long term liabilities. Student loan, domicile, extraordinary liens. With no debt besides one form of revolving credit a person making 35k per year can have the lifestyle of someone making 80k.

The life insurance policy mentioned is a great idea but will be costly due to you being a smoker. That doesn't make it a bad idea.

Also due to time value of money, stay away from annuities.

The meaning of life is 42. Easier question by far.

      17. The answer is 42… but what was the question again?

I think my total debt right now is less than 4k. That's no problem.

But straight up, you are gonna be my federal tax guy when it all comes down. I'll pay what you consider fair and whatever travel expenses.

      18. Oy! Duh. I forgot debt repayment like Smartguy mentioned. I just took it for granted that when someone comes into large money, the first thing you're supposed to do is pay off any debt you have. That alone will make you richer. But yeah, debt repayment would be #1.

Also, I forgot you were a smoker, so yeah, a term life insurance policy is going to cost you more.

If you use a broker (financial advisor/salesman) to handle your money and they don't tell you up front of their fees and what they charge for the products they are selling you (including commission), run away.

@Smartguy; Not according to Siri. Ask Siri what the meaning of life is.

      1. We were out trick or treating with Drew last night (he was a Jedi), and we passed a kid, prolly a teenager dressed as The Joker. So my wife, still in her full Harley getup, yells over in a pretty good impersonation of the voice, "HEEEEEY Mr. J!" The look on the kid's face was priceless as it went from "WTF" to one of recognition.

  2. Uncharted 3 for me. Thought about the new Goldeneye, but i never really played the first one.

  3. Goldeneye seems like it could be a decent game to pick up from the bargain under $20 bin eventually. I'm not sure I want to pick it up before then.

  4. I will be picking up uncharted 3 and be parting ways with black ops and gears 3 to help pay for it. Best buy has the +40% trade in bonus if you buy uncharted 3. I'm halfway to my $100 best buy gift card just need mw3 next week then legend of Zelda skyward sword. I can't wait! It will be my first motion plus game plus I'll get the cd of the 25th anniversary orchestra show from last week or two weeks ago. I can't remember

  5. waiting for a buy 2 get 1 sale,

next week or two may be one of the best gaming weeks ever

    uncharted3, MW3 and…wait for it….

    SKYRIM

  6. I won't buy any of these. Not that they're bad, just that I don't have any good game systems anymore. Besides PS2, and they don't make games for those anymore.

  7. I REAAAAAAAAAALLY want Uncharted 3, but it may have to wait. I have Skyrim and AC:R both preordered for later this month, so I'm not sure three games this month is doable.

  8. Nothing for me. I'm going to borrow UC3 this time. I'm still pretty hooked to Battlefield 3. I'm sure one of my friends will buy MW3 for me next week. I always tell them I'm not interested and they buy it for me every time. Kinda neat.

I might be done buying games this year, and if D3 hits in January…I'm done buying for quite some time :)

    1. Let your friends know that I am totally not interested in the collector's edition of Batman Arkham City.

      -M

      1. I remind them all the time how disinterested I am in a 22 foot center console. Hasn't worked beyond $60 yet lol

    1. No one here is going to hold that against you. I mean, what else were you going to use the $60 for, phone bills? Verizon can wait, damnit. Nathan is singing you his sweet, seductive siren call and it's your duty to listen. Uncharted 3 isn't going to play itself, you know. If it did, it would be a movie and we all know how much movies suck now-a-days. Is that what you want? Another crappy video game movie? No? Then sit down, install the game, make a sandwich, take a shower, mow the lawn, do your grocery shopping, put your kid to sleep, and then enjoy the interactivements (trademarked).

… maybe I should think about writing Kevin Butler commercials.

    1. hmm…I don't remember those pictures. I guess I'll have to go back and refresh my memory.
