Coffee Talk #418: Rating Halloween Candy

Today I’d like to talk to you about Halloween candy. What candy did you love getting in your trick-or-treat bag? What candy did you loathe? Is there a particular candy bar that left you with a feeling of “meh”? Let’s review and analyze Halloween…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Verve’s Ethiopia Biloya, Jennifer Aniston’s wrinkly hands, or posthumous albums, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Today I’d like to talk to you about Halloween candy. What candy did you love getting in your trick-or-treat bag? What candy did you loathe? Is there a particular candy bar that left you with a feeling of “meh”? Let’s review and analyze Halloween candy together!

Treat: I loved getting 100 Grand candy bars. The combination of chocolate and caramel is a timeless classic. I’m pretty sure the rice appealed to me because I’m Asian. The name makes it sound like a luxury. Hmmm, I might have to get one for breakfast….

Necco Wafers are the Worst Halloween Candy Ever

Trick: Necco Wafers are, by far, the worst candy in the world…unless you’re fond of Tums and chalk. Every time I saw this dreaded candy being thrown in my bag I thought, “Screw you lady!” At best, Necco Wafers are useful for when you run out of poker chips. At worst, they’re Necco Wafers.

Meh: I never understood the popularity of Three Musketeers candy bars. They’re not bad at all, but they’re not particularly good. The whipped filling and lack of density gives it a rather unsatisfying feeling. Despite the swashbuckling name, they’re just fluffy and boring. I didn’t mind getting Three Musketeers during trick-or-treat runs, but I wasn’t thrilled to get get them either.

Now it’s your turn! Kindly share your favorite, least favorite, and meh Halloween candies.

  1. Reeses are always my favorite candy of choise. The holiday varieties somehow manage to taste even better than the normal ones for some reason.

Worst are the sugar/candy coated marshmallow treats. They are almost painful to eat do to their overly high sugar content and biting into them is just barely subpar to biting into cotton candy. (I don't like them either.)

The most meh is candy corn. I feel like I'm eating a chewy rock when I eat them because they don't have a real taste to me.

      1. The best thing about candy corn… is teaching children how to play poker with it.

That's how my brother and I learned, as well as my son and my niece.

      2. I would never do that. You should always play poker (or learn to play poker) with something of value like coins, monopoly money, or pogs.

  2. I don't have the sweet tooth I used to anymore.

I was always fond of the Snickers and all the Snickers I got would end up in the freezer every year.

Whoppers literally make me nauseous just to think of them.

    Meh is almost everything else.

It's crazy Ray, my kids and my wife all pick 3 Musketeers as their favorite (for a while now) and my mother in law LOVES those Necco wafer things.

    1. Wow. I can accept your wife and kids digging Three Musketeers. You mother loving Necco Wafers is hard for me to imagine. I don't see what's so enjoyable about eating something that tastes like Tums.

  3. My wife is actually picking out all of the Kit-Kat bars out of our Halloween candy stash. I buy the candy a month or two in advance since it's cheaper and unfortunately, one of the bags of Kit-Kat did not survive that long. Then yesterday, as I'm getting the bowl of candy prepped for tonight, she starts taking a few of the Snickers bars out for herself. Granted, they are the full-sized bars, but still, this is someone that claims "they don't like candy."

Me- I have a sweet tooth the size of Montana. I have too many favorites to list here, but among them are Sweet Tarts, Nerds, War Heads, Sour Patch, Starburst, Skittles, M&M Almonds, 3 Musketeers, Whatchamacallit, Hershey's cookies & cream, Reese's peanut butter cups, Kit-Kat, whoppers, Snickers, and gummy (anything it's shaped like).

    1. Worst candy: Licorice, Twizzlers, Tootsie-roll, Valentine's candy hearts, peanut brittle, Boston Baked Beans, Swedish Fish, candy corn, and Good n' Plenty (which have also been referred to as "the shit pellets of Satan's pet demon bunny."

      -M

      1. I can't disagree with one item in that list. I'd like to add those marshmallow peanuts though.

  4. Fav: Thingamajigs (I just found out about these and they are way better than Whatchamacallits) and Take 5.

Hate: Circus Peanuts (which reminds how much I love orange slices)

Meh: Twix bars. The regular old caramel ones.

A candy I like but no ones else has had Sixlets. I love those things, but no one has heard of them.

    1. I've had sixlets before. They are meh for me. I can't eat just the six that come in a package, so I either have to keep eating them or I just eat a different candy I like more instead. I've heard of and had them though.

      1. I forgot they came in such small packages. i just remember buying the large packages of them.

    2. They're kinda like M$M's but little balls, right?

I remember vending machines having them next to the Chicklets when I was a kid. Those are old school.

  5. @Ray
Did you see AT&T is finally getting LTE phones in their lineup? Nov 6th the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

    1. I did see that. It's interesting that the company is being coy about that constitutes 4G (LTE) and what doesn't (HSPA+). It's probably best not to confuse mainstream consumers, but it's bound to lead to disappointment. 4G is significantly better than Faux G.

      1. I think they should stop selling phones labeled 4G (like my infuse) once they put out some true 4G. I know they won't because it will look like the more affordable way to get 4G than the $200 for the Vivid and the $250 for the skyrocket on contract. The Infuse 4G can be had for $99 (will probably drop in price with these releases).

The Skyrocket is more appealing to me at this point than the Galaxy Prime, but neither will get my business.

  6. Treats: Reeses (especially the big cups), Hersheys, Skittles, M&Ms (mostly peanuts), Kit-Kats, Take-5s, Shockers, WARHEADS!, and the occasional Smartie packet make my Halloween an enjoyable time of year. And don't even get me started on Snickers.
Tricks: Milky Ways are popular enough to be handed out often, yet I don't enjoy them. For me, off-brand candies, Candy Corn, Milky Way, and the dreaded rock are the worst. ("I got a Hershy bar!" "I got a quarter!" "I got a rock.")
Meh: I'm agreed on the 3 Musketeers and Twix bars, but here's some more; I don't particularly enjoy Nerds or Laffy Taffy, either.

  7. There aren't too many candies I don't enjoy. Saying I have a sweet tooth is very underrated, something I get from my dad, as saying I have a mouthful of sweet teeth is more like it. Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Skittles, M&M's, Reese's, Reese's Pieces, Kit Kat's (especially frozen), swedish fish, Twix, Now and Laters, Sour Patch Kids, Warheads, Whoppers, Milk Duds, Crunch bar, Nerds, Starburst, Almond Joy, 100 Grand, etc. Anything else you can find in the candy aisle of any store.

Candy is good at any point in time of the day. When it comes to Swedish Fish or M&M's I have gone through the 10 pound bags of those before. Peanut M&M's are like a drug, I cannot stop eating those once I start. That is why I usually have to limit myself to one of the regular family sized bags at a time instead.

Also for the record, I've never had a cavity in my life. Most people who have been around me for a decent amount of time don't believe me when I say that.

  8. I enjoy too much candy but unlike bsu I have cavities. My favorites are snickers, whatchamacallit's, skittles, starburst, sour patch whatever, Swedish fish and many more. My dislikes are candy corn, candy cigarettes and wafers like necco ones oh and twizzlers!

  9. I don't eat candy often, but when I do it's a Reese's cup.

Trick: whoopers and candy corn. Who eats that shit?

    Meh: beef.

    1. YOU GOT BEEF BEFORE!

That's awesome… probably illegal, but awesome.

I got a can of peas once. They ran out of candy and started working with the canned goods.

      1. I'm actually a coin collector. Pennies is where I first started, naturally. I lost count of how many I had after a few thousand. I have a large chest full of them that I would have to eventually sort out. Aside from collector's versions or proof pennies, the only circulated pennies worth keeping are the ones from 1982 and earlier since those contain more than $0.01 worth of copper. If the price of copper continues to rise and money gets tight, I'll slag them all for a … a pretty penny. (cymbal crash)

        -M

      2. My goal is to one day have a full set from 1856 to current day. I have almost all mints and years for the Lincoln Memorial pennies, and then some of the Wheat Pennies, a few Indian Heads, and my 1856 Flying Eagle penny. I thought about going for small cents at one point, but decided to just stop at large cents, and if I completed a collection of those then I could move to small cents.

  10. Possible Coffee Talk topic or David Letterman’s Top Ten List:

Things shorter than Kim Kardashian's marriage.

    -M

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if that 10 million wedding is deemed a business function, and the 2 million ring is a depreciable asset.

To be honest, if I were the guy…I wouldn't sign the papers.

  11. Its a god damn vietnam monsoon down here, so i cant take my 5 year old out, so i will be unable to steal her smarties

for the record, worst candy are those little boxes with the monsters on them, with the chalk like candy, that, or bit o honey

      1. good question, it doesnt really matter, seeing as how we are going to clean out the walgreen's tomorrow, so she (I) will have all the candy she (I ) can deal with .

  12. Thank you fellow Rpadaholics for reminding me of all the shit candy to steer away from if need be.

I'd like to add those shitty Marvel chalk candies you get at the Dollar Store.
