Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Hulk Hogan taking back bumps after eight back surgeries, RIM’s BlackBerry BBX OS, or the Red Sox ordering Popeye’s fried chicken during games, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

With the rumor of Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio Auditore da Firenze set for an appearance in Soulcalibur V, I was thinking about videogame crossovers and cameos. There have been so many great ones over the years! Bill Clinton in NBA Jam, Mega Man in Dead Rising, Michael Jackson in Space Channel 5, Solid Snake in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Spider-Man in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 immediately come to mind. Last year I had a blast playing as a Helghast from Killzone in Hot Shots Tennis. Crossovers are cool.

The Soulcalibur series has my favorite videogame crossovers of all time. Soulcalibur II had Link from The Legend of Zelda and Todd McFarlane’s Spawn! Soulcalibur IV had Darth Vader and Yoda from Star Wars! Those inclusions caused me to mark out as a Zelda, comic book, and Star Wars fanboy. It was almost nerd overload, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing as those characters. So cool.

Now it’s your turn! What are some of your favorite videogame cameos and crossovers?

  1. I believe Spider-Man and the incredible hulk were in Revenge of Shinobi for the Genesis, i enjoyed that

  2. Funny you mention that. I finished Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions last night and after the credits rolled, I was treated to a very amusing cameo by none other than Peter Porker- Spiderham!

That's a +1 for the game in my book.

  3. Best ever is SMB. Loved that game on the Cube.

    Kingdom Hearts

Battle Toads & Double Dragon (just bought it on my NES)

    Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe

Does being able to play the Atari version of Pitfall in the Sega Remake count?

  4. I geeked when Lemmy and Rob Halford popped up in Brutal Legend. Don't forget that Spawn was in one of the Soul Caliber's too.

As for crossover games, I liked playing Galaga in Tekken 2. And I noticed on the XBL MP last night that there's a "Parody Pack" of maps for Duke Nukem. As I recall, It's not the first time a Duke game has done that.

  5. While a few come to mind (Mario in a Zelda game?!), Smash Bros: Melee is still my favorite. Even though Snake and Sonic weren't in it and it wasn't as good as brawl overall, it's nostalgic for me. Oh no, nostalgia?! I'm getting old!

Kingdom Hearts is good, as long as it's a console game or Birth by Sleep.

And yes, I remember that middle picture up there. That's Spider-Man in one of Tony Hawk's skateboarding games (it's PS1 era, but that's all I know). I owned that game! Aah! For once, I can contribute my knowledge to society!

    1. What the… ?! This was one of my favorite games of all time. I think I've played this game for over a hundred hours combined, memorized the patterns of every enemy, recited all the text boxes by heart, beaten it over thirty times and I had no idea that this hidden capsule existed.

You, sir, have just given me an excuse to dust off and plug in my SNES. What else do you know about my favorite games that I do not?

By the way, both of your videos are identical, but I'll just look up the Hadouken video on YouTube myself.

      1. I noticed that as well. If you open the video in youtube the second one is on the right side like videos.

The first time I found this out, my head exploded. There was another Mega Man that had a Mario Brothers like battle mode in it. One player was Mega Man and the other was Bass

  6. I can't really think of any game I've played much of where I've seen a cameo. I've heard of one where the Gears of War characters appeared (can't remember which one), same with Mario and Link's characters. I just never played games where I've had that happen I guess. Either that or I've missed all the easter eggs!
