Coffee Talk #400: I’m Raymond and I’m Still Your Verbal Entertainer

I wanted to use this edition of Coffee Talk to reaffirm my message from Coffee Talk #100 and to thank you for your readership. Yes, I’m Raymond Padilla and I’m still your verbal entertainer. I’m not a journalist. I haven’t thought…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Intelligentsia’s La Tortuga Honduras, Mariano Rivera’s record-breaking save, or Charlie Sheen’s celebrity roast, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I wanted to use this edition of Coffee Talk to reaffirm my message from Coffee Talk #100 and to thank you for your readership. Yes, I’m Raymond Padilla and I’m still your verbal entertainer. I’m not a journalist. I haven’t thought of myself as one for a long, long time. I’m a verbal entertainer. My goal is to make you laugh, think, or cry with words. Sometimes it’s written word, sometimes it’s audio, and sometimes it’s video. While I enjoy posting stories, I get a real charge out of using them to start conversations with you all. That’s the best part of this site — the interaction with you guys and gals.

In the past I’ve said that calling most people that write about games “journalists” is an insult to actual journalists like VentureBeat’s “Dancing” Dean Takahashi and the LA Times’ Alex Pham. Being a verbal entertainer is a lot like being a professional wrestler. Certainly there’s an athletic component to pro-wrestling, but most people don’t consider WWE Superstars to be professional athletes. Similarly, there are journalistic aspects to what I do and sometimes I engage in actual journalism, but it’s not what I’m about. I’m a verbal entertainer!

The last few months of running the site have been difficult. Losing my Amazon Affiliate money in July was a huge blow that my bank account hasn’t recovered from. The hosting problems created by the morons at AnHosting caused the site’s traffic and ranking to take an enormous hit that it hasn’t recovered from. I wanted to make sure that you knew that I’m still committed to the site and still committed to being your verbal entertainer. I’m not going to be able to spend as much time on the site as I’d like due to my finances, but I assure you that it’s not going away any time soon.

Thanks for dropping by Coffee Talk #400. Let’s make our way to #500!!!

  1. I love her boobies Rpad, nice picture! Thanks for providing countless laughs and thought provoking issues and situations. There really is no other place that I know of online like this and I feel lucky to be part of your innerwebz entourage.

    1. As far as I'm concerned; every first comment to every article Mr. Padilla posts should start with "I love boobies."

  2. not to get too much into your business, Ray, but….will you be doing more freelance stuff to help make ends meet? I get kind of bummed out when i hear that you are not doing as well as you would like to be, financially. Thanks so much for being here and providing us with this site, i would get into more arguments, like i did over at the "other site", but i like everyone here …sorry :(

    1. Yeah, I pretty much have to get a ton of freelance or find a "job" job to make ends meet. It's going to be tough, but I'm hoping something will pop up.

      Thanks for hanging out!

  3. Ray, write a book on the seedy world of game journalism and conventions. That should fetch you a nice advance and some royalties. Let's be honest, if you smear G4 in it…it will sell.

    1. actually, he could most likely smear Comcast as well

thats actually a really good idea, have you ever considered writing a book of some sort?

  4. Glad you are still here. I have had to cut way back on my attendance here but while I am in class I try to stay caught up. I feel you on having a "full time job" and no income. School is eating away at my time and money with no money coming in.
But I love the site and the people so I am here as long as you are.

  5. Thanks for the site! I appreciate all that u write and ur interactions with us. I'll be here as long as the site is up and running

  6. Just got a letter and a call from AT&T about tethering. I havent used tethering in a long time. But some how I have used 33Gb last month and 42 so far this month. That coincides with me getting my new 4G phone, but I don't use it THAT much and generally I am on WiFi

      1. I installed a data counter and in 10 minutes of my phone sitting idle, it transferred nearly 1Gb of data…..doing nothing.
I flashed back to a stock ROM hoping to fix the data leaking.
But they said I am not even allowed to connect my phone via the Usb to HDMI adapter it came with to my TV to watch netflix. They say that is the same as tethering. I call BS on that.

Also if they "catch" me tethering again I go to the 4Gb tethering for $45/month and loos my unlimited.

  7. Damn, 400 already? You're getting old, dude.

I'm just worried that you're going to run out of things to talk about. Don't worry, though, I'll stick around for Coffee Talk #500: "How do you normally tie your shoelaces?"

    1. Also; I've said it before and I'll say it again: Get your Amazon.com account back by incorporating in Nevada. Open up a P.O. Box somewhere in the state and a bank account. If you go here:
      http://nvsos.gov/index.aspx?page=415

they'll even let you incorporate online. Create "Padilla Enterprises, LLC" (or whatever) and then go to Amazon with your new corporate name and Nevada Tax ID number and when it checks out, they'll start pumping money back into your account. Make sure the Nevada bank has a branch in L.A. (or just transfer money from your Nevada bank account to your primary bank account in L.A.) and you're good. This is not illegal. Ask Smartguy.

      (continued)…

    2. The worst-case scenario is that if Amazon somehow thinks that this is a violation of their terms of agreement (which it's technically not, since you're doing business in Nevada) and decide to cut you off. Then, so what? You're already not getting anything from Amazon anyway, so you haven't lost anything. Make sure you pay your business tax license fee to the State of Nevada once a year (online) and specify to everyone that you would like to communicate through e-mail and you'll never have to physically check the P.O. Box.

Ask someone that knows the law if this is legit. It should be.

      -M

      1. That sounds very doable. It really depends on Nevada state law about the sort of presence you have to have inside of the state.

  8. I can't believe it's up to #400 already!! I can still remember adding you on LinkedIn and finding out about this site around day two or three, it's been a fun ride so far. Hopefully plenty of freelance work, or a "job" job shows up (for me too!) soon, but in the meantime I will continue to be here contributing and arguing; also beating Big Blak later this week in the rpad.tv fantasy football league to remain the only undefeated team.

    1. GO FOR IT.

…what, you don't know which I'm talking about? Well, if you don't know, I won't tell you.

    2. Go to the Gameloft/LG party. Diablo III can wait until you get back.

Also, take pictures of the super cute chick.

      -M

    3. Give me the credentials in order to download the beta client. I will do the write ups for you. You just collect checks.
