Nike Air Mags (Back to the Future Shoes) Revealed Today?

[Update: 4:39 PDT] The word on the street is that Nike will be unveiling the Air Mag, the awesome sneakers worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II. A bunch of sneaker journalists (I love that there are sneaker journalists, btw) received late-night calls from Nike yesterday in order to make arrangements to attend an event today. All signs point to it being for the Nike Air Mag.

What do you think of the kicks? Are they a sweet reminder of when Michael J. Fox was the coolest guy in the world? Or are they ugly? Would you buy them?

  1. Dude… if they have the power laces… I would actually entertain paying like $300 for them to sit on my shelf with the occasional fitting.

  2. Yea 30 years to late, but I guess everything is retro right now. I personally am an Adidas head and I don't eff with Nike.

The shoes are also ugly as hell, but they aren't made for me or like minded people.

    1. Remember, that Doc said something to the effect of "These are what all the kids are wearing nowadays and you'll stick out without them".

So 4 years is a good start before it's as common as Jordans (which is what the joke was about either Jordans or Reebok Pumps).

  3. I would have bought them (or rather, have my parents buy them) back in 1988.

If you think about it, N8 has a good point. The movie ACTUALLY predicted the future!

  4. I know some people who are already planning on buying some of these. As for me, I don't think I will be making this purchase.

    1. That is sickening…

      Edit:

Some of the proceeds go to the MJF for Parkinson's research which isn't so bad but I wonder what the percentage is.

2nd Edit: From the official page

Q: WHERE DOES THE MONEY FROM MY WINNING BID GO?
All net proceeds from the auction sales of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes will go directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Q: WERE THE 2011 NIKE MAG SHOES USED IN THE FILM BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II?
The 2011 NIKE MAG shoes are movie prop replicas inspired by the Nike shoes appearing in the 1989 film Back to the Future Part II. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoes are not designed or intended for normal wear and use as footwear.

Q: DO THE 2011 NIKE MAG SHOES POWER-LACE?
No. For the power-lace feature you will have to wait until 2015.

Did you see the 2nd Q&A, why would I want shoes that are not designed to use for footwear or normal use? If I had that kind of might I might consider getting a pair, but then again, I could blow $5-8Gs on something useful, not that Parkinson's research isn't useful.

  5. its funny to me that Zemeckis gave the future too much credit…

no flying cars, no 3d movie marquees, no hoverboards, no self drying clothes, no automated 80s bartenders, we still use dustbusters…etc

    1. The line is:

"Unfortunately, where they were going… they still needed roads."

No food re-hydrators either. However… when Marty got fired and all the memos showed up all over the house… that kinda foretold social networking.

EDIT: What about Kubrick's 2010 or Orwell's 1984? According to any Terminator mythos, the machines done took over already.

  6. What exactly do people plan to do with these shoes? Display them?

I suppose they could be looked at as an investment, and im glad people are giving that much money to a worthy cause, but at 35k, you are about 40 percent on a Tessla Roadster, or a 2012 Nissan GT-R

    *(my lottery car lol)

    1. What would you do with a hoverboard?

If you want to know what I would do… I would get very very hurt very very fast and never want to touch the thing again.

      1. one of these days im going to get into an arguement with you wherein i play the role of an 18th century British gentleman

  7. Wait so this was a special thing for charity only? these aren't coming to every shoe store in Umurica?

I recently bought my first pair of tennis shoes that isn't Converse All Star. They were a pair of Nike running shoes. I'm too old to shrug off leg pain now when running.

Yes, I'm dead serious about straying from Converse for the first time. I have worn only 4 (now 5 brands in my whole life) primarily.

    1. The initial run of 1,500 is for charity. There are no plans to make them a regular release, but that could change. That would be cool if a self-tying version was released to the masses next year.
