Coffee Talk #371: You Digging Google’s New Design Efforts?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Canada Day, RIM’s employees writing letters to rise above, or whether Roger Federer will win another grand slam tournament, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

After more than a decade of releasing excellent products that were almost always on the ugly side, Google is on a mission to improve its design and UI. The tenets of Google’s design philosophy are focus, elasticity, and effortlessness. You can see the new design elements in Google.com, Google+, and Google Calendar. The new design is coming to Gmail in the near future. What do you ladies and gents think of Google’s new design philosophy?

As for me, I absolutely love it. Using Google+ is almost shocking. I don’t think a Google product has ever been more elegant and intuitive. I was 50/50 on Google Calendar at first, but after changing the background image I was able to appreciate its leaner design. The new Gmail design looks fantastic and I can’t wait to use it. Overall I’m super impressed with Google’s new design efforts and totally not surprised that one of the original Apple Macintosh designers (Andy Hertzfeld) is behind it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Google’s new design. Love it? Hate it? Gotta have it (think Aziz Ansari)?!?

  1. Yo… That Tsonga/Federer thing was crazy. I'm not sure if Roger choked or Tsonga just kicked it into overdrive.

    Either way… crazy.

  2. I actually thought Roger was playing really well. Jo was playing out of his mind though. I'm bummed that Roger lost, but at least he played great tennis. Hopefully Nadal doesn't win this year. I'll be backing the Djoker.

    1. I didn't watch the match, but I watched the news. Which is why I couldn't say what happened exactly.

I know Roger won the first 2 sets and then Tsonga came back to beat one of best in the world. Almost every sports movie I've ever seen has a plot like that.

  3. I just had a Canada Dry and I love this soda. Question for you, why does ginger-ale only come in green cans or bottles?

  4. I don't know that I really notice many of the changes to anything. I mean I visually noticed them but I don't know that I actually click any of that stuff. I have never seen the Google Calender until today. I don't use any of the buttons on Google.com or in a google search. And I never use my actual Gmail, I always use my mobile gmail. I just realized I don't email people either. I use SMS and FB to get messages to people.

  5. Does anyone know of a way that can turn off Google voice notifications? I hate getting an email, text, notification from Gvoice, and on top of the missed call notification.

    1. Those are easy to change in your Google Voice settings. I have email and text turned off. Just go to the upper right-hand corner to the icon that looks like a gear. Click on "voice settings" and you'll be able to change the options there.

      1. Man I have been trying to do that through the app on the phone, I just started using it and didn't even think of trying to do it on the web.

  6. I have not uses one, but there is nothing wrong with a fresh hat, but why on earth would you disrespect your face with a Yankees hat?

      1. I'm bringing the both of you to my next family reunion. You'll both fit in just great, because half the time we just argue about the Red Sox and Yankees.

      2. Funny, most of my non-Yankees and Red Sox fan friends actually hate Boston more, because half their fans are still unwilling to admit that they're just as responsible for the problems with competitive balance in baseball as the Yankees are. It's like half of them still think they're the "little team that could" or something and not one of the top salary teams. We Yankees fans know our place and just don't care.

      3. People that think that are not bright lol, it's well known that the Sox drop millions. The only reason they don't spend as much as the Yanks is because they don't have that much.

      4. Lol I had no idea man, I remember ready something about it. In all honesty I was just talking shit I really don't like baseball.

    1. I got it this morning I can't wait to try it because the 1st and 2nd ones were unplayable on the Mytouch 3G.

  7. I had one in Pittsburgh.

It still kinda tore up the hat, just not as bad as it would have without it.

  8. I'm a little bummed at this. Google's bland style was their own thing after so long. I will miss the plain looking Google.

    1. I think I told you a while ago that the entire story in that game is easily passed by.

      Oh yeah… What ending?

      1. Yeah you werent joking. Gameplay wise it was great though.Sent from my iPhone 4

  9. David Haye put up a garbage effort against Wladimir Klitschko. It was pretty shameful considering all the trash he talked, especially about Wladimir boring the heavyweight division. Haye spent most of the fight bobbing, weaving, lunging, and flopping.

  10. After a few days experience with Google's new design in Safari on iOS….

    I totally hate it.

I stay hitting one of those icons on the top instead of what I mean to press. It's more annoying than a Carrot Top look-alike contest.

  11. How do I use Google+? Can you comment on someone's profile like Facebook? I added Big3Lak and I think Slicky.

    1. Yeah I'm figuring it out now too, just added you, Nightshade, Rpad, Big Blak, and Slicky.
