Wednesday Housekeeping: Comment System Changed (Again)

I’m really sorry to do this to all of you, but I’ve changed the comment system…again. Disqus was causing too many headaches, so I’ve decided to go with IntenseDebate. The good news is that it has most of the features that you enjoyed with Disqus. The better news is that it eliminates two issues that have been giving me headaches. Here are a few notes on IntenseDebate:

– Similar to Disqus, after you get an IntenseDebate account, you can change your display name to whatever you want it to be.

– If you don’t want to get an IntenseDebate account, there are several other login options. WordPress.com, Twitter, and OpenID login options are live. I’m going to try to implement a Facebook option once the old comments are finished importing.

– There are some nifty widget options that might make commenting a little more fun. There’s a “top commenters” widget that is potentially fun and can make a game out of commenting. I’m going to give it a whirl after the import is complete.

– From my test site, it appears that IntenseDebate totally works with my front page and the mobile version of my site.

Thanks in advance for grinding through this with me. I really appreciate it and am sorry to pull another change so soon. I think it’s best for the long run. The funny part is that I wanted to go with IntenseDebate initially, but changed my mind due to Disqus’ popularity. Like Prince Akeem said in Coming to America, “The first reaction is usually the correct one.”

Please let me know what you think of the new new commenting system and if you encounter any quirks.

    1. Gha! How can you post that picture of Scarlett Johansson and NOT expect us to "thumbs up" it?!!

    1. I love Star Trek. That animated gif is pure awesomeness. How can I post an animation or picture?

  1. This system seems okay. It was far easier for me to sign up with this one than it was to sign up for Disqus, which seems odd because I have never heard of or used Intense Debate but I use Disqus everyday on Engadget.

Also props on fitting in a Coming To America line………Freeze you deceased rhinoceros pizzle!

  2. Every time I try to post it says it needs approval. Then if I leave the site and go some where else and come back to a page I 'posted' a comment on, my comment is back in the 'new comment' box ready to be submitted….again???

Hope this all gets worked out soon.

  3. The page populates with the old comment system and it comments. After I posted the page refreshed and now it is on the other again that I have been posting on all morning and nothing is showing up. I hope this does…..

    1. That was my fault. There are two settings that I needed to change. One I fixed. The other I have to wait until the import is finished. It appears to have stalled….

  4. That's cool. I am linking the Intense Debate setup. Seems to be VERY functional. Just going to take a little bit to get used to it though.

  5. I think I liked the other posting system better, but I'll get used to this one. I liked being able to post pictures from my hard drive instead of needing the html tag and editing that stuff.

    1. Glad you dig it! The bad news is that importing old comments keeps failing. I'm currently on my sixth attempt and it appears to be stalled at 87%. I traded one set of problems on Disqus for another set on IntenseDebate.

  6. Yea man that does suck, I would have taken a shotgun to the computer already lol.

  7. @Ray

That is really weird. I guess I was only trying to log in on the Thursday housekeeping page, but I can't stay logged in on that page at all. I logged in on another page and then went there and it logged me out. Very strange error. I don't know why the other comments had to be approved when I was logged in through twitter, I didn't think that happened before.

      1. lol yeah it is. I still don't see that car though. My fiance can see it, she must have some special type of vision though.

  8. that's pretty lame that you can't use Amazon anymore! good thing i ordered my headset and Back to the Future Blu-ray when i did. I hope you find some place new soon. It made me feel real good inside knowing that i wasn't only helping you out but getting some goodies too.__I love the new comment posting now, btw! keep it up Rpad!
