Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Iranian terrorists taking over Sizzler steakhouses, currywurst, or Intelligentsia’s Los Inmortales El Salvador: Finca Matalapa Puerta Zapa, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Will the combination of PlayStation Suite and Qriocity lead to Sony succeeding in the Android tablet market? That seems to be what the company is banking on. Sony recently announced that it will be releasing two Android tablets later this year — a traditional tablet with a 9.4-inch screen and a funky folding tablet with two 5.5-inch screens. While Sony’s “style” will help these tablets appeal to the masses, it looks like the company is banking on its own services to help differentiate its tablets from the numerous Android manufacturers out there. Will this strategy work?

I need to think about it more, but my initial inclination is that these tablets will get lost in the shuffle. On the hardware side, a folding tablet doesn’t have the wow factor of 3D (LG G-Slate) or the practicality of a laptop dock (Asus Transformer). On the software and services side, Sony looks silly compared to Amazon and its aggressive Android moves. I know loads of people that love Amazon’s MP3 Store and several that love Amazon Instant Video. I don’t know anyone that thinks highly of Qriocity. PlayStation Suite has lots of potential and I’d love for it to take off, but a few sources within Sony have told me that the product is getting the bastard treatment internally.

What do you think of Sony’s Android tablet future? Will its slick industrial design, PlayStation Suite, and Qriocity help it rise above the competition? Or will Sony’s products end up being one of several Android tablets released in 2011? Leave a comment and let me know (please!).

  1. Does something have to be labeled as an Android Tablet when it uses Android? Is that a Google mandate? Just curious. It would to be a catch 22 for them that way. So many devices running Android yet most look different as far as interface goes.

What exactly will this Sony tablet offering have over other android devices running custom skins?

Perhaps my ire of everything and its brother being touted as an android device is seeping through.

    1. It depends on how Android is used. There are some cheapies made in China that don't have any Google branding at all and don't use any Google services. They just swiped the source code for a jump start.

  2. Oh…i think these will be not good. I imagine their current issue with their network could give issues to these tablet/cloud devices. I also think because they are Sony…they will be overpriced, underpowered, and late for updates if any. (going off of xperia trend)

    1. I'm not sure the Xperia relation matters. That's a Sony Ericsson product. This is Sony Electronics. For decades the company has been amazingly fragmented. Imagine how powerful it would be if electronics, mobile, gaming, music, and movies worked together?

      1. That would be great if they could. They would be as novel as Apple with their products and ecosystem. Too bad their bureaucracy won't allow that lol.

  3. @Ray

Off topic but are you going to E3? If not, can you interview and get some more video of the game HAWKEN? Ars has a write up on it today and I'd like to know more about it and the dev team. I'm sure they'll take all the exposure they can get! I am so sold on the very little I know about it! FPS mech combat!!!

      1. If that game is there please get some more info! I'm excited about it.

I'd like to attend E3 one day. I'm actually gonna see about getting into WWDC next year. I can write code, and a friend of mine who's a software engineer wants to put out an app or 2 so we can get credentials lol.

  4. nope, ps1 games dont really excite me too much in 2011…im just not much of a mobile gamer…that new psp might change that however, if the graphics are anything like they are advertised. Dont own a tablet, i suppose i will, one day. I dont see the purpose in owning a tablet, unless you are either a frequent traveller, or a business professional..and/or verbal entertainer

    1. Tablets are awesome. Having a portable and multifaceted entertainment device is just tremendous — love it for home, love it for travel, love it for the coffeehouse, etc.

  5. What was the point of drafting Cena to Smackdown and then back to RAW on the same night? Smackdown is worse after this draft. Smackdown was stripped of ADR, Mysterio, and Big Show but only got Orton in return. This also means that ADR will not win the title since he's now on RAW with the WWE champ the Miz. Can't have both champs on the same show.

    1. The point was to keep viewers hooked for the episode. Of course he wasn't going anywhere. Smackdown has always been the "B" show.

I'll post the results in another post so everyone will know.

  6. G2X is still mostly impressive after several days. That said, I think I'd give up the extra GPU power for what the Sensation offers. At least that's how I'm leaning today.

    1. I love this G2X thing. @ Rpad I found an app that enables the bottom keys to light up when you get a message on the G2X. I can email you the info if you'd like.

      1. No thanks. I was never big on LED notification. G2X is a great phone, but the metal build, higher resolution, and smoothness of Sense 3.0 are appealing. Great choices to have though. Right now I'd give up the GPU power of the G2X for the Sensation. I might feel differently tomorrow.

      2. The guy at Tmo hooked us up, he didn't use my gf's upgrade or mine. We extended the contract for two years and got the G2X that way for (199 and a $50 rebate). I am eligible for an upgrade in 2 or three months and my gf is ready for one now.

Long story short I won't be behind the tech for at least a year and a half, awesome!

  7. I had another root canal yesterday and guess what? Yup! Vicodin and FF7 later lmao.

    1. Nice…I think all my vicodin is gone now. Though I do have two more wisdom teeth that I should get pulled…

      1. Yeah, pity about them Knicks, huh? Mike Dan'Toni is a terrible coach. There's a reason why the Suns never went anywhere while he was out here in Phoenix despite them having a ton of talent.

      2. I really thought they'd win at least ONE game. After that Melo game where he scored 40+ and they still lost though, I gave up that notion.

        Go Hornets.

      3. CP3 can't be guarded. Artest, Kobe, Fisher all get schooled on the crossover. I've been impressed with Carl Landry so far as well. I'm pretty sure OKC is going to represent the West though.

      4. Also with Kobe's ankle all hurt…I wonder who they will stick on Paul this time? Artest is a damn good defender…but he can't stay with Paul.

side note: I went to Game 3 in NOLA (we lost) but after seeing Phil Jackson in person trying to walk…I cannot question his reasons to retire. He looks pretty rough just standing.

      5. Artest is not fast enough to stick with CP3, if he keeps him in front at all times hell be good but we both know that aint happening.

      6. Yea D" Antoni would be a great hs or college coach (not division 1). The way he coaches is like a bad guy action basketball movie just go go go until you lose in the end.

      7. You've gotta play defense at just about any level to be successful. I have no issue with the up-tempo game. But you've gotta guard on the defensive end too.

      8. Yea your right. You can make the playoffs that way but you will not be getting out of round one.

      9. I've never had to have anything harder than vicodin. Of course I usually don't use pain medication at all so it's not normally on hand for me.

Back in high school one of my friend's moms had a huge supply of valium, she loved that stuff.

      10. Vicodin is acetaminophen (Tylenol) and hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is an opioid containing codeine.

Basically, it's about 5 steps away from heroine.

      11. Yeah they put the acetaminophen to discourage heavy use. That's what the dentist told me anyway. They offered to write me an extra scrip of 10mg Lortabs at my last visit because I complained about it hurting.

Tempting…but those damn things can get addicting.

      12. Lol BSU.

        @ anyone

(it will make sense in the end)

I got the G2X last week and honestly I have been playing Angry Birds like a mad man. My old phone Mytouch 3g couldn't handle that game and would be choppy as shit when I played it. I used to You Tube some of the walk through and would be amazed at how smooth the game looked in the videos. Now with the G2X I notice a crazy amount of choppiness while watching the walk throughs.

      13. Must be the drugs that was really interesting while I was thinking and typing it, not so much now a few mins later lmao.

  8. Sony's account security really took a hit. I find it hard to believe that they are not sure if CC info was compromised even though all of the other data was.

    1. I was just about to comment on this as well.

The thing I find amazing, is that they waited 6 days to inform their customers who may have been affected.

      so… @ everyone

You're all smart people. Say you got a hold of my credit card info and had malicious intent. How much stuff could you get in 6 days?

      1. $12… but that's beside the point.

People have their debit cards connected. That's someone's entire checking account. No matter how big someone's account is, I could put a SERIOUS dent in the funds given 6 days.

      2. Especially when you consider that some places have point of sale that only pre-auths the card for $1 since there is a force pay rule on debit cards.

      3. @N8

It costs me $100 to fill my truck up per week. I at least would have driven across the bridge and into NOLA to get a fill up once or twice by now. The drive wouldn't bother me seeing that I'm getting the gas for free.

    2. Fairly certain that's corporate speak for "it was, but we don't want to admit it was."

      1. Yeah. Luckily I kept an old debit card attached to my PSN account. I also had the presence of mind to use my spam filled hotmail acct as well. Very not pleased at this.

      1. MW2 is so damn full of bugs/glitches. At least that is why I quit playing it. A long time ago before the first DLC came out. The bastards who would run around with the care package smoke with lightweight, commando, marathon were unbearable on a P2P connection.

I'm not surprised that Craptivision's product is the culprit.

  9. So I read that SETI was shut down…and supposedly they found a great cluster of planets. Naturally I go all X Files thinking and make myself smile. I decided I'd scroll the comments for conspiracy nuts. Wow.

Then I decided to google SETI conspiracy. Then I googled the alien races. That stuff is more interesting and crazy sounding than most books I have read. In fact, I'll say it ranks with The Singularity.

    1. yeah i read that too when seti was shut down….i have a few conspiracy-head friends

what the hell is the point of worrying? If neil degrasse tyson tells me that there is no scientific basis for their "evidence", i tend to believe him

i guess i must be naive….the funniest crap is that planet X stuff circulating around…so EASILY disprovable, and i have friends who are convinced that its true….i have some stupid friends

      1. hey man! that planet has a cloaking field and the moon is really a spaceship as is Mars for the Rigels who are in a 4 thousand year old civil war with the Pryocinians!

there is an excerpt of the stuff.

      2. i love that these alien races have names which lend themselves so nicely to english pronounciation…very thoughtful of them

      3. hahaha. they explain that as well. seriously, you get bored at work…google alien conspiracy stuff. better than textsfromlastnight for wasting time.
