Wii 2 Controller Sounds Insane (in the Membrane)

Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo posted a ton of (rumored) details on the controller for the Wii 2. I really don’t know what to make of it. The controller sounds strange and unusual, but in a very different way than the Wiimote. When Nintendo announced plans for the Wii, I had an idea of what the controller could do and the type of fun it could lead to. The Wii 2 controller sounds a bit…insane:

Its main controller, as rumored, will include a touchscreen, two analog sticks and a camera, we’ve confirmed with our own games industry sources who are familiar with Nintendo’s plans for the machine.

That new controller’s screen will measure 6.2 inches and the controller will also include eight buttons.

I enjoy the simplicity and direct connection of touch controls. I also enjoy the complexity of having multiple buttons. That said, I’m having a hard time blending these two (very) different input methods. Of course it wouldn’t surprise me if Shigeru Miyamoto made a game that made the controller seem brilliant. It also wouldn’t surprise me if the controller was only used in an interesting way in first-party games developed by Nintendo.

What do you make of the Wii 2’s controller?

  1. That sounds like a big controller and that is good news for me. I can see having the DS functionality in terms of the touch screen, like you have your main game on the TV and some kind of mini game or shortcut happening on the controller simultaneously. That could up the complexity factor with games. Just a thought.

      1. I love the 360 controller in comparisons to the original XBOX controller. But then again, I'n not a big guy either. Having seen a couple of pictures, I think you would need two of me to get one Big Black. I'm like 5'6" on a tall day.

      2. If it is a battle of hand size can my opening be at least contain something along the lines of "… weighing in at 330 lbs with a ring size of 16…."

  2. If it's as Dreamcast meets DS as it sounds, it'll put the original Bill Gates Oedipus Complex XBOX controller to shame in relation to it's "girth".

  3. How about instead of that controller, I just use my DSi to control the Wii 2 using the wi-fi ability of both of those systems. Because that's basically what this controller sounds like to me.

    1. New Nintendo, Wii in HD,

      Big ass touchscreen

      (2 analog sticks)

      Playing on a balance board

      (n**gas gettin' fit)

La La La La, La-La La La

    2. This makes me feel like blasting the Judgement Night soundtrack.

(Looks around room, sees 4 year old)

      Never mind.

      1. According to statistics, if you blast your gangster rap music around your kid as he is growing up, he will end up hating it and prefer classical music instead.

        -M

  4. I can see motion control working, but a touchscreen and camera on a controller? Sounds more like its own handheld, if you ask me. In fact… Maybe they're going down the same route as Sony, adding more connectivity between handhelds and home consoles. Maybe?
