Today’s Poll: Is the Motorola Xoom a Flop?

According to an investor note from Deutsche Bank, Motorola’s Google Android tablet — the Xoom — has only sold 100,000 units since its February 24 launch. Considering Motorola’s aggressive marketing campaign and the Xoom’s hype as an “iPad killer”, most people are dismissing the product as a failure. Others think the Xoom’s relatively modest numbers are inline for a product in an immature market; they believe that it was always stupid to compare the Xoom to the iPad, simply because the OS and apps aren’t ready.

What do you think? Is the Xoom a flop? Or are the estimated sales about right for a product that’s half baked?

  1. The price just isn't right for me yet. I really enjoy the tablet. I used one at BestBuy. I could pay $500 for it, but I don't need the 3G (or 4G) capabilities as long as I have my phone. Also do people even take these out of their house to need anything other than WiFi? I have never seen a tablet as an everyday traveling item. I generally vacation travel items end up in spots with WiFi coverage anyways.

If I ever meet someone with an iPad or other tablet, I plan on asking if they take it anywhere, but still to this day I have never seen any tablet in the wild outside of a store.

    1. It's pretty common to see people using iPads in Los Angeles. It's even more common in San Francisco.

I love the browser and Gmail on Honeycomb. Some of the widgets are excellent too. BUT there are some aspects of the OS that are clearly not ready and Google has admitted as much. The amount of tablet-specific apps is a joke. Google should have launched the first Honeycomb device with at least 100 apps.

  2. I think the OS is too busy honestly. The lack of apps is also depressing. I'm not a huge app purchaser on my phone, but I do purchase more apps on my tablet as they are more functional and specific.

If that number is lower than Samsung's then I'd call it a bust at this point. It's fair to compare all tablets I believe.
