Coffee Talk #304: Your ’80s Cartoon Dream Game

With THQ set to release a Voltron videogame, it seems like every beloved cartoon from the ’80s has made its way to the realm of interactive entertainment. Are there any ’80s cartoons that you adored that haven’t made their way to a videogame console?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Joba Chamberlain becoming Joba the Hutt, if Nokia is destined to be just another handset maker, or if this is Albert Pujols last year as a Cardinal, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

With THQ set to release a Voltron videogame, it seems like every beloved cartoon from the ’80s has made its way to the realm of interactive entertainment. Are there any ’80s cartoons that you adored that haven’t made their way to a videogame console? Perhaps there’s an ’80s franchise that has mostly sucked in gaming and you’d love to see it get one more chance.

As for me, I’d love for Robotech to get another shot — specifically The New Generation. I was absolutely mesmerized by the third Robotech war as a kid and think it would make a brilliant game. I see the diverse action of the cartoon recreated in a diverse game; there would be third-person shooter action with guns, motorcyle levels with cyclones, and aerial missions with veritechs. A combination of awesome vehicles, diverse action, and Ulpio Minucci’s brilliant soundtrack would be a dream come true for me.

Now it’s your turn. What’s your ’80s cartoon dream game like?

  1. This Thundercats CG footage is…disturbing.

  2. Honestly I would love to play a Beetlejuice game with the characters from the cartoon but the game should be dark and twisted like the movie. Since the game would be about the after life you could use the actual movie plot and also have some much creative liberty into making the game. I'm thinking Psychonauts smashed with open sandbox gameplay, some scary elements, awesome graphics, crude humor and adult language.

  3. there still hasnt been a transformers movie based on the cartoon series…im still (foolishly) holding out hope

  4. I'll take a good GI Joe RTS or streets of rage style brawler.

He-Man as long as it isn't all kiddie. I want him to seriously whip some ass. GoW style please. Thanks.

I used to love LoneStar when I was a kid…not sure if that would be a good game or not.

    and some lagniappe. Enjoy!:

  5. lagniappe?

i used to watch silverhawks, only because the villians were badass, the actual silverhawks sucked

  6. Man, I remember wishing the Robotech games on the PS2 didn't suck so bad. I gave up on the 1st one after like the 3rd or 4th mission, since it was the 3rd or 4th escort mission in a row.

Actually I'm kinda looking forward to the Voltron game. I remember when Voltron and Thundercats were both on Toonami and my friend John and I turned it into a drinking game.

  7. Honestly, none. I've seen enough of my child hood favorites ruin via movie, reboot, or video game.

    1. I'm going to have to agree with this as well, but I'll give it some thought and come up with something good later.

  8. Ok, I got it.

A game based on the animated TV show M.A.S.K. that would be a cross between Burnout, Pure, and HAWX. The cars you drive would all have special abilities and your car would gain different attributes based on the customization of your masks. You can play as either a team member from M.A.S.K. or V.E.N.O.M.

Similarly, I was thinking this concept could also be adapted to the TV series "Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors". It would be a more diverse game since the Monster Minds vehicles would be amorphic plant-based vehicles.

That's all I have for now. You guys can flesh out the rest… that is, of course, if any of you guys are old enough to remember these obscure 80's cartoons.

    1. I used to have all those toys. I always get a kick out of it when Robot Chicken makes fun of that show.
