Coffee Talk #293: Nintendo 3DS vs. Sony NGP Poll

Now that you’ve had a day to think about what the Sony NGP brings to the table, I wanted to see which 2011 portable gaming system you prefer. Based on what you know so far, would you rather have a Nintendo 3DS or a Sony NGP?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Lea Michele pegged to sing “American the Beautiful” at the Super Bowl, if puberty will derail Justin Bieber’s career, or Charlie Sheen believing he’s immortal, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Now that you’ve had a day to think about what the Sony NGP brings to the table, I wanted to see which 2011 portable gaming system you prefer. Based on what you know so far, would you rather have a Nintendo 3DS or a Sony NGP? Kindly take today’s poll and explain your answer in the comments section.

  1. I voted for "I don't want either" with the full knowledge that my wife will want both and I will eventually end up buying both.

  2. 3DS. I think it offers a nice addition to handheld gaming. NGP just doesn't offer anything spectacular to me. Games included

  3. i voted for 3DS. it has more games i'm looking forward to right now and plus i can play any games from my DS.

    @rpad

do you know if the 3DS is keeping the GBA slot like the DS/DSlite's have right now? i'm thinking about selling my DSlite to help with a 3DS purchase soon but i don't want to if i can't play any GBA games.

    1. No, there's no GBA slot unless I've missed out on something. My understanding is that Nintendo is being Nintendo and will try to make you buy digital version of GBA games. I'd hang onto that DS Lite just to play GBA games. As a Pokemon nerd, I always have two systems around so that I can trade my Pokemans. Ha!

      1. yeah i can see that happening too but Nintendo has only said orginal gameboy and gbc games will be first right?

    1. Uh… are you using that word as an adjective or a verb?

Because I was thinking that maybe each core got together at a party and had a little too much to drink, and decided to all take off their clothes, and, well… bom chicka, whaa-waa.

    1. Sony definitely has the online advantage on several levels. Nintendo has never been great at leveraging the Internet. You'd think they'd have figured it out by now….

  4. Seems that SF judge sided with Sony and granted that restraining order and a seizure of George Hotz's machines.

Very bad PR move I think. I know it can and will influence my purchases going forward.

  5. I'm not into handheld gaming but if I had to choose one it would definitely be the PSP2. I have no interest in Mario and Pokemon.

  6. I definitely had to say the 3DS. I am trying to keep my DSi as well because it is really annoying not being able to trade between my games for Pokemon. Although the NGP looks cool and has some PS games that look like they would be fun there are two big factors in why I will stay away from it. For portable gaming I would much rather have a Nintendo product because I prefer their games. Second, for the price of an NGP (assuming analysts are correct or roughly right in their predictions) I would just purchase a PS3 for about the same price instead, which seems like a better buy to me.

    1. Of course you picked the 3DS. As wonderful as the NGP appears on paper, it will not have the next-gen Pokemon games. I'm pretty psyched to watch Pokemon fight in 3D. Does that make me like Michael Vick?

      1. Pokemon Black/White is where I will be spending 90% of my time on the 3DS, but even for that other 10% of time the games that Nintendo puts out for their handhelds are a lot more appealing to me than anything that Sony puts out. And if it were the exclusive series that I really wanted to play anyways, like I said before the PS3 seems to make more sense instead of an NGP.

Pokemon is probably the only game I am really interested to see in 3D, and I don't consider that to be like Michael Vick so I would say you are safe too. haha. I'm pretty excited for a new Pokemon game in general though no matter what system it is for.

      2. You'll change your mind once you actually see 3DS games. I was a little skeptical at first, but actually seeing and playing 3DS games changed my tune. Some of it is just cool to look at, while some titles get more interesting in 3D.

      3. That may be so. 3D isn't really that appealing to me though, maybe sans-glasses will make all the difference in the world. I am still interested to see how it actually looks and am really trying to hold judgement until I really get a chance to see it for myself.

      4. The mistake I made going into it was thinking of 3D in terms of movies. It's a different ballgame when you're using it in an interactive experience. After a few hours of play, I found it much more engaging.

      5. Just a thought for a moment: With the advent of Augmented Reality games, who would like to see an AR game for any of their favorite series? I read this article about the possibilities of AR gaming, and I loved the ideas. In fact, would you like to see one of the next Pokemon games on AR? Or even remakes from the ground-up on AR?

      6. Yeah. The current games seem to be testing the waters, not much fun; since both new systems have AR, somebody (probably Nintendo) will eventually step in and break ground with something amazing. I can't wait to see what it will do!

    1. It's "roughly" the same distance from Phoenix to Vegas, which is around 7 hours by car. Having never been to Lake Powell, I'm really just guessing though.

      1. Two hours with an R-44:

It's amazing, with the whole desert-snow-desert transition. I never thought it snowed in Arizona.

Of course I'm biased to my state, but I've made a similar trip from Miami to Orlando where all you see are various farms, woods, and lots of swamp. It's beautiful and I highly recommend it.

        Your son would love it.

      2. Yeah, we drove to Vegas a couple weekends ago and it's kind of weird to to drive from the desert, through the mountains, and back to the desert.

  7. Anyone else getting the feeling that no amount of lambs blood is going to save the Pharaoh tonight?

    1. Wow. Kudos! That's the first biblical reference I've heard about the whole Egyptian situation. I'm actually surprised I haven't heard any Jewish jokes about it yet.

      N8, get on that.

      -M

      1. WOW… am I late to this.

My apologies. Work kicked my ass over the weekend and I slept most of today.

        As per request…

I think bringing Israel into the situation is actually too touchy. Think about it, with all the things happening in Yemin, we are talking about major strife on both sides of the Suez Canal. Now, let's say the President does end up being overthrown… the ONLY people in the area organized enough to seize that seat are Muslim religious fundamentalists. With that happening on both sides of the Suez Canal (which was a huge deal in WWI) and Israel (a nation that doesn't just lie down and take things anymore) sharing a border… we really are inching closer to WWIII.

Or… maybe I'm just reading too far into it.

  8. so, i ordered ghostbusters and ace combat 6 off amazon (you should have gotten credit for it)

and so, im now about 45 minutes into the ghostbusters install….this is first time ive been honestly a little peeved at install time

      1. actually the install kept getting stuck, because the disk was dirty…which is interesting, because it was new….

  9. So I got an email from Amazon that I figured was coming at some point, talking about DS lite, DSi, and DSi XL trade ins for the 3DS. $50, $75, and $100 respectively. It got me thinking that I really wish I could talk to some of the people who were actually trading the systems in before they actually did it because I would easily pay someone $50 for their pokemon special edition DS lite!!!

      1. For $50 they are! All of the special edition versions are usually more expensive wherever I have seen them. The cheapest used one on Amazon.com right now is about $140, and that is roughly how much they were on eBay before when I got my DSi. If I had more time on my hands I would just wait in front of a gamestop and offer someone $50 for one that they were about to trade in, lol. Then just trade in my DSi for $75 towards a 3DS. That much credit sounds good, but my intent has been to keep my DSi for trading purposes.

What I really always wanted before was the Pikachu edition DS lite, but that was a Japan release only and a LOT more expensive.

      2. I've seen some pretty cool GBA SP limited editions before. It seems like they came out with a lot more special editions for that system and the DS lite than any other system I have seen. I only recently saw a couple that I never knew they did before. The Mario DS lite was another one I liked because it had a really good hue of red.

  10. alright, so im looking for a 2tb external hard drive that i dont have to format to fat32…i just want to be able to plug the bitch in and have my ps3 recognize it….any suggestions?

    1. @Thundercracker

It is my understanding that the PS3 system will only read off of FAT32. If you are wanting to use the 2TB external as 1TB dedicated to the PS3 and 1TB dedicated to whatever else that should be possible to partition the external. You will have to download a tool to format into FAT32 from download.com though. Pretty easy stuff.

My flashdrive is 16gb and there were some….files…that were a bit more than 4gig and the PS3 wouldn't play the file. Don't know if that is some kind of safeguard or not.

If you want to know how to format to FAT32 that is quite easy. My computer / select disk / right click / delete partition. Run the tool. Or if you are using OSX you can do it with Disk Utility.

I hate spelling that word with a K at the end.

      1. @smartguy

thanks for taking the time to explain, i already have a 500gb internal, im just thinking ahead :)

  11. did anyone catch the Royal Rumble last night?!? they had a pretty decent ppv. it was much better than last year's.
