Nintendo Announces American 3DS Pricing and Availability

At a recent press conference, Nintendo announced that its upcoming 3DS gaming console will be available on March 27, 2011 for a price of $249.99. Industry pundits expect the 3DS to be another dominant handheld gaming system from Nintendo, but the company has more and different competition than in years past. In addition the Sony PlayStation Portable 2 (expected to be announced on January 27, 2011), the 3DS will compete with the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

What do you think of the Nintendo 3DS’ price (vote in the poll please!)? Will you pre-order one? Or will you take a wait-and-see approach?

  1. I voted for too expensive but now i have a few months to save up for this and possibly a little bit more because i'm really not thinking of buying this until they release LoZ OoT.

  2. It is a good price, I just won't be getting one. No real reason except I just haven't bought a nintendo handheld since my green screen gameboy.

  3. For everything that it is competing with it is probably just right, but I still think it is too expensive. I would have much preferred the $199 price point (that would have also helped convince my fiance to let me get one when they are released, since I will have plenty of stuff for the wedding to pay for). This price does make some sense though because, I believe, it was Miyamoto who said that people should not think of the 3DS as just a handheld and that the difference in price points between handhelds and consoles was blurring. Something along those lines at least.

Nevertheless I will still be trying to get one of these as soon as they are released.

i hear you on the wedding stuff. i just went cake tasting in highland in on Saturday. i think the place we went to was pretty cheap from what i heard but i will still shop around.

      1. Yeah it is definitely all pretty expensive. There is so much stuff to pay for, and they charge so much for it all too!! Right now she doesn't want me to get the 3DS because we will have enough other things to pay for instead. I still plan on getting one asap though.

yes it is especially selecting the hall. i'm still debating on whether i should let people bring their kids or not and whether i should have a premium open bar or just a cheap one.

      3. yeah it is all a very expensive ordeal. I think we are only going with the cheap open bar. The catering is going to be one of the bigger expenses too, which I am not looking forward to at all.

      4. yeah it is. I'm kinda happy that we chose a hall that caters too. now it's up to people to choose their meal.

      5. we got one that had a caterer, and then the catering business closed down and they place isn't supposed to announce another caterer until next week.

      6. that sucks. are they going to hold a one hour show and announce it on a local public access channel?

      7. haha that would be convenient, but I guess they will just be contacting everyone who has something booked with them and letting them know. Trying to meet with everyone.

  4. I'm really not into the handheld gaming, but my wife is. So I can see this being the next point of contention in the house after the "can I buy the iPhone" debate we're haiving now that it switched to Verizon.

Might sound harsh but try this: “let’s return half the crap we will get as wedding presents and split the cash 70/30 my way”.

I ran that one by my gf and she agreed. She said it was fine since we live together and have everything we need. No sense in all the gifts being geared towards our house or her (since she’d get a shower)

    1. Yeah I know we are already planning on what we can return if we get it as gifts. Some of the money we get back from that stuff will probably go towards a 3DS though, that is the plan I am going with.
