Coffee Talk #275: CES Developments and You

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is right around the corner and all sorts of exciting (tech nerd) developments are about to be unveiled. What are you looking forward to at CES 2011?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Brett Favre’s slap on the wrist, the best cut of steak (it’s rib eye), or random closing thoughts on 2010, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is right around the corner and all sorts of exciting (tech nerd) developments are about to be unveiled. What are you looking forward to at CES 2011? Televisions are a huge part of the show, with 3DTV and advanced LED implementation leading the way. Android phones should be a major slice of the CES pie, with Verizon set to announce an LTE Android phone from HTC. Video chat through phones and televisions should cause a stir. There will be several Windows ultra-portable laptops on display from numerous manufacturers looking to duplicate the success of the MacBook Air. Tablet computers will be tremendous too, with several vendors serving up Apple iPad alternatives.

What are you looking forward to the most? Kindly take today’s poll and discuss in the comments section (please!).

  1. Can't an Android phone be considered an ultra portable laptop?

Now that I have your attention I'm looking forward to see what Android phones will be hitting the shelves. I am interested in, but don't want or need a 3Dtv or a tablet. Overall I just want to see/hear/read about all the "game changers".

  2. I am in the market for a Tablet right now. I got the Dell Streak because I THOUGHT they had all been updated or were capable of going to 2.2, but they aren't. Android 1.6 sucks. Nothing runs on it, most of the apps just Force Close.

Been considering the Galaxy S Tab, but the price is a bit steep especially since I don't want 3G on it.

I am also looking forward to seeing what new phones are coming out.

Not interested in TVs mostly because I won't be able to afford them so why even look.

  3. @slicky
The TAB might be too small for you since you look pretty big. It's too small for my tastes.

    @Favre
Who cares? Why even fine him? If your investigation couldn't conclude his involvment then why fine the guy for not wanting to answer your questions? I think the NFL just begs for trouble by putting hot women in with their athletes. So much ego and other things.

Disclosure: I take test boosters 3 times per year so maybe I'm too sympathetic to the athletes.

    @CES
    Interested in mobile LTE pricing.

    1. I thought about that. I like the size of the iPad but I don't like the Apple Store. The Galaxy Tab is smaller but that also means more portable. Although it would mostly just be for around the house.

But both companies have already had leaked info about updating both so I doubt I'll even get the current generation of either.

      1. Ah I meant iTunes, same reason as always. I don't use credit cards and you have to have one to do anything with them even if it is free.

But I did go into Dallas to see what all the fuss was about Apple stores and that touch pad thing. I will never go back into one.

      2. I completely understand the credit card thing.

However, you are incorrect in thinking you need one for iTunes.

You can go to the grocery store, or Walmart, or wherever and get an iTunes gift card and create an iTunes account off that alone.

I did it for years until I just gave in and put in my cc info so I didn't have to leave the house if I wanted a new app.

      3. Really? I had no clue. How does that work with the free things? I had to put a friends card info on there and I would always get a statement for all of the "charges" for free apps. If that's all it takes I may actually go get an iPad.

      4. You get the receipts for the free stuff in your email, but it doesn't charge anything.

It's been a while since I did this, so I may be off a step or 2:

First thing you do is get like a $15 iTunes card (more if you so desire, but starting off with the smallest helps in case something goes wrong).

        Go into iTunes.

        Go to the iTunes Store.

Hit "Redeem Code" (now, they change the placement of where it is so often and I don't have iTunes at work to verify the placement, but I think it's in a menu on the right hand side).

Put in the code on the card.

Set up an account from there and leave the cc stuff blank. It may also help to have an AOL email (which is free).

If it won't let you leave the cc stuff blank, I may have used an American Express Gift Card to start it, but I don't think I did. You have to figure that Apple wants underage kids to buy stuff who don't have cc's, their parents won't give up the cc's, as weel as their parents are computer illiterates.

After it's all set up, you'll see your email address in the bar at the top as well as your account balance.

My brother just set one up for his 12 year old daughter over the holiday and he's SUPER anal about giving up cc stuff. I don't think he even has one due to fear of the government tracking his purchases.

      5. I remember reading about a work around when I had my iPhone. I never could get it to work, but I don't remember if it was the same method as this. Any which way, thanks I'll download iTunes and try it out.

      6. @slicky

He's right. I can't use my CC or DC on iTunes ever since they updated to 10.1 so I have to throw a giftcard on there every other month. Annoying but I kinda like it better that way.

      7. @N8R

I just set up my mom's new iPod touch and iTunes did not let her set up her account with an iTunes card only. Also, my account had to be changed because it was telling me the three digit security code on the back of one of my credit cards was wrong.

        @CES

Although I do not have an Android phone right now, I have a strong feeling that will be my next one, and I am growing tired of Apple. I am really excited to see what they will be coming out with next. Also, I am somewhat curious about tablets, but only those running Anrdoid.

      8. A: I suppose there's no chance in hell you missed something or did something wrong, because I swear on the soul of my father that I didn't even have a bank account nor cc when I first set up my iTunes account. I promise you.

B: That 3 digit thing happened to me recently, there wasn't enough money on my debit card to pay for what I already bought. Put money in your account, wait a day or 2, and put in the security code it's asking for.

      9. It must have been something with not hitting redeem before setting up the account then.

The three digit security code thing did confuse me though, because that cc has been linked to my iTunes account since day one and I randomly couldn't update an app a couple days ago because it said the security code was wrong. Nothing should have changed that I can think of, but it stopped working. I just recently used that card, and it has credit on it- ironically I linked a debit card to the account with practically no money in it and iTunes accepted that card.

      10. As I just commented to SG (before I saw this post), it did it to me too, but it cleared up.

It may have been a temporary bug in the system and for all I know, it only affected Visa cards.

      11. Mine that was affected was a Discover card, the one that worked for me was a Visa. Who knows, probably a bug in the system somewhere that got fixed or will hopefully get fixed soon.

      12. It must be fixed by now, I got the exact same card working again after it did it to me.

Couldn't get updates for a few days (which sucked), but it's all good now.

      13. @BSU

It will. I have plenty of funds on both of my cards and the new iTunes for whatever reason told me the security codes were invalid. So I had to resort to using giftcards only.

Try going into the account, and under payment options select "none". That will allow you to update and get free items from the app store. Since you have "none" selected you can then redeem giftcards.

      14. I just got off the phone with my brother (who is also an Apple hater) and he set up a brand new account this past weekend for his daughter using only an iTunes GC.

Confirmation that it can be done.

      15. @ SG

That 3 digit thing may have been a bug that is now resolved. It was doing it to me and now it is resolved. I thought it was because Christmas kicked my ass and I overcharged my debit card, may have been something else though.

  4. Am I the only person that has to work tomorrow also? All of the city office's that we deal with will be closed for the holiday and I just feel like I am getting shafted.

    1. If your office is serviced by dsl you could conveniently back into the pedestal and knock it out. No internet, no clients, no work.

      1. @SG

We don't have internet in the office. We use SneakerNet. My boss's PC is the only one with internet. He doesn't know I tether to my PC though.

      2. It is serviced by dsl but if i do that i knock it out for the whole plaza. I work in a shared office plaza.

      3. @Tokz

Well everyone would either love you or hate you if you took out the dsl for the entire plaza. haha. it might be worth the gamble, lol.

    2. I'm going to try to come in tomorrow to get a leg up on the end-of-the year stuff, but I don't know how much work I'm going to get done since I want to watch the UM-Notre Dame game at 2:00 p.m.

      -M

    1. those must be some cheaply made hurdles, because I know how much standard metal hurdles that we used when I was in high school can hurt. Those would not fall apart so easily. the music does make that clip awesome though.

      1. Our hurdles were metal with thick wooden slats. Those looked like paper mache. Great video though

      2. yeah ours were all metal, so if you ran into them like that you were more likely to trip and hurt yourself rather than go right through.

  5. Well i'm off to get my haircut, watch the bulls game, watch ND lose to Univ of Miami, and celebrate the New Year. (In case i don't get to post later) Everyone have a safe new year celebration!!

    1. I lost my virginity on my 14th birthday…

I can't remember if I did that or not before that. But as I recall, I was always willing to put my hands all over hot chicks. Now (since I've been with the same girl for 11 years), I'm more apprehensive.
