Coffee Talk #230: Airplane Movie Review!

I’m about to hop on a flight back to Los Angeles, but before I do that I wanted to talk with you about two movies I saw on the way here: Cyrus and Grown Ups. I enjoyed both movies in very different ways. Here’s the lowdown (not D.Lo Brown style):

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Big Ben’s return, whether or not I should stalk the freshly single Christina Aguilera, or NY pizza totally ruling, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I’m about to hop on a flight back to Los Angeles, but before I do that I wanted to talk to you about two movies I saw on the way here: Cyrus and Grown Ups. I enjoyed both movies in very different ways. Here’s the lowdown (not D.Lo Brown style):

Cyrus: I really wanted to see this movie in theaters. I’m a fan of John C. Reilly (best sidekick actor ever!), I was curious about Jonah Hill in a dark role, and Marisa Tomei is hotter now than she was 15 years ago (plus, she’s super talented). The three of them were fantastic, the script was an interesting blend of romance and dark comedy, and some of the conversation scenes were filmed in a really stylish way. Cyrus hits different emotions that rarely come together. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a movie that’s a romantic comedy, a dark comedy, and a drama at the same time — very cool and very different. It’s surely not a mainstream flick, but I enjoyed it immensely and regret not seeing it in theaters to give it some support.

Grown Ups: This movie, on the other hand, should not be seen in theaters. Having said that, I enjoyed it too and was surprised at the three or four times I laughed out loud. It’s certainly not a good movie, but there’s some funny writing and great delivery. In a way it’s kind of like the original Ocean’s Eleven (the Frank Sinatra one); you know it’s not a good movie, but there’s something entertaining about watching a bunch of good friends working together. Plus, I admire Adam Sandler for serving up strong comedies, dramas, and action movies (okay, two out of three). Plus (again), I have to support Rob Schneider for being part Filipino.

Anyway, those were the movies I caught on Saturday morning. Any of you see anything interesting lately?

  1. thanks to tokz for kicking my ass this week…there are no more unbeatens now

    rob schnieder's character in that movie sucked so bad, but WOW his daughters were smokin hot

  2. no i haven't seen anything new. i've been wanting to go see RED but i think i'll just wait for HP7 part 1. I was interested in seeing Cyrus too but it only had like a 2 week run in the theater that plays artsy films which was a WTF moment for me.

    @Big Ben

    For some reason he was still available in my league so i picked him up. now i have 3 QBs. i'm not sure if i should dump vick or schaub now.

    @stalking Christina

    i say go for it. I'm sure Reona Rewis will not get jealous or miss your heavy breathing on her bedroom windows.

    @NY pizza ruling

    i'd have to try some before i can agree or disagree with your statement.

    1. thats how I feel about having Orton, (Eli) Manning, and McNabb. They are never consistently good or bad enough for me to feel comfortable with dropping one of them, but then again even if I did there aren't any really good RB's or WR's that I would want to pick up in their place. Three weeks ago Manning had the best score out of the three, last week it was Orton by far, this week it was McNabb…I need more consistency than that.

      1. we should talk trade. oh wait you're in the same division i am. i don't like same division trades.

  3. I prefer NY pizza by a mile. But the only good pizza place out near where I live is Chicago style.

    I'd love to know just how bad the Dallas Cowboys record needs to get before they stop being the lead story on SportsCenter or NFL Network. I've seriously had enough.

    1. I agree. Fox was so annoying trying to hype up the Cowboys-Vikings game. who's going to go 2-3 or 1-4? I've never seen a hype machine go to work so hard to push two underachieving teams.

      1. Then afterwords, they were going on about how "great" a game it was. Really? Were they watching the same game I was?

      2. i know, right! The only bright spot in that game was that Joe Buck wasn't announcing it. I think he would've shat himself wondering who he should back Romo or Favre.

  4. Not really interested in either of those movies, and I still need to actually watch Iron Man 2 and the Kung-Fu Karate Kid.

    1. Why are you still reading this? Turn off your computer and go watch Iron Man 2 like, right now. In fact, if you like The Avengers or The Ultimates, it is already considered a sin to not have watched Iron Man 2 yet.

      1. seriously BSU, don't make me have to drive down there and strap you down to a chair to make you watch it!

      1. He does the voice of Afro's (I guess you would call him) Bard (minus the poetry plus swearing).

      2. sweet! if there's one man i can listen to swear all day it would be Sam jackson. It would've been great if he could've thrown in a muthafuck@ in the SW movies, like when Anakin betrays him. It would've been awesome.

      3. I love Afro Samurai. The whole first season is sooo good. I didn't like Resurection as much, but it was still pretty good.

  5. I watched Jackass 3D this on Friday. I was disturbed and entertained by it. I will probably go to see it again in the theater just so I can sit somewhere besides the 2nd row from the front, it was packed in there.

      1. It was worth the $11. We sat at a bar and DRUNK before we went so the 3D was that much better. This one seems by far the most gross, puking, poop & penis sums up the movie. They had 2 cops at the door to the movie checking IDs.

  6. I saw Superman: Doomsday, Batman: Under the Red Hood, and Batman + Superman: Apocalypse recently, primarily due to all the recent talk about those DC movies.

    I have to say, "Under the Red Hood" was the best one out of the bunch by far. I don't know what it is about Superman that makes it so difficult to do a good film (both real life and animated). Doomsday had some interesting concepts, but I read the actual Doomsday (and Return of Superman) graphic novels and I felt that the film bastardized it's literary counterpart to the point where it was virtually unrecognizable. The whole "good vs. bad" Superman brought flashbacks of Nuclear Man into my head from that "movie which shall not be named" and that is totally unacceptable.

    Apocalypse was just a rehashing of the Supergirl origin story that wasn't done all that well. The animation and battles were all pretty cool, but once again, Batman is just SO incredibly out of place amongst all the super humans that it borders on ridiculous; especially that scene where Darkside is wailing on him. The movie had it's moments, but they were few and far in between. It definitely would have helped if the movie was fleshed out a little more and been a little longer… and taken Batman out of it as he seemed like he was there just to fulfill a contractual "generic scowling pessimist ancillary character" obligation that could have easily been replaced by any other dour JLA member.

    So, yeah, Under the Red Hood is awesome. It's everything you'd want in a Batman film; mystery, mob intrigue, conspiracies, The Joker, Nightwing, things blowing up, Robin, lots of killing, and Ra's al Ghul! I have to agree with Mr. Padilla that Nightwing was under-utilized in this movie. I am not saying that because I'm a Nightwing fan (far from it, actually), but he seemed like he was going to be an integral part of the climax since the movie was so perfectly set up for it in the final battle. It felt kind of empty without Nightwing in the second half of the film. Still, the movie is awesome and should not be missed by any Bat-fan.

    Oh, I think I should have mentioned earlier: SPOILER ALERT!!

      1. My roommate bought that last week or so and I'm going to try to watch that on Wednesday night, it looked pretty good though. Looking forward to this movie.

      1. You're right, Mr. Padilla, I have never read any Batman + Superman comics. I prefer each in his own element (city?) and not teamed-up, with a possible exception to some JLA action. Good call, Detective.

    1. i was actually enjoying the game and looking forward to seeing Lee go back out there to pitch a complete game but the Yankee bullpen just collapsed at the end.

    1. No… it's from Airplane.

      The good news for Smartguy, is if he watches that scene, they have subtitles in Peckerwood.

      1. I thought of Airplane at first but i was like no way could that have been Airplane. I should've realized that it wasn't ghettospeak enough to be soul plane.

  8. LOL!

    Yeah, it's the part where the black airplane passengers are talking to the stewardess and she asks if anyone on the airplane speaks "jive".

    Ha, ha. Classic.

    They should do an updated version with Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes.

    -M

    1. yeah i remember it now. i think the updated version was Soul plane. it had Snoop Dogg as a pilot and all the other prominent black comedians.
