Coffee Talk #228: Game Delays That Break Your Heart

Sony has announced that Gran Turismo 5 has been delayed…again. It’s comical at this point, but I’m trying not to laugh because I have the utmost respect for Polyphony Digital. The delay got me thinking about other delays. Have you ever had your heart broken by a game delay? Was there a game that you wanted so badly that its delay crushed your soul?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Chilean miner saga, Gilbert Arenas faking an injury so a teammate could play, or your favorite park, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

  1. Blizzard games. I know they never give a date necessarily but them constantly taking 5 years per title is unbearable lol.

  2. i was really looking forward to DC Universe this year :(

    mmmm i can't really recall if anything has crushed my soul recently besides that but so far that's it.

    @chilean miner

    idk why everyone is talking about it. I understand that they've been trapped underground for like 2 months but they were never in any danger.

    @Gilbert Arenas

    oh is that the reason? i thought he was doing the faking of an injury part so he wouldn't play for the Wizards anymore. i guess he's trying to even out his bad karma.

    @my favorite park

    is this like a trick question? do you mean like amusement park or an actual park? or someone with the last name park?

    1. Arenas' idiocy is truly fascinating. It was nice of him to fake an injury to help out a younger player, but you don't tell reporters about it after the game.

      As for your parks, it's totally up to you.

      1. I agree Arenas' idiocy is amazing.

        Hmm favorite amusement park is Knott's. I just have good memories of that place growing up.

        Actual park, i've only been to parks in Chicago. I've never thought of going to parks when i'm on business. You know i like that park in Downtown L.A by the library, idk what's it'scalled i think it's on 6th and Figueroa. I like Lincoln Park because it's so huge and there's a lot to do.

        As for a man name Park, I like Ray Park that man does it all!

      2. If Arenas really wanted to help the kid, he could have gone to his coach and said, " Hey Coach, way don;t you let _______ start. It's just a preseason game, and I think it's be good for him." Instead, he went out and made it all about himself.

  3. I don't mind delays if it truly is because the game needs more work but what I don't like is when games are 100% complete but gets delayed for business reasons to maximize sales and I think that's what's going on with GT5.

    @Raymond Padilla

    How do you like what the WWE is doing with Daniel Bryan?

    1. The Danielson/Miz feud has been my favorite part of WWE recently. I mostly love what they're doing with him, but I wish they gave him a win in Seattle. He's from Aberdeen, so a win in his home state would have been nice. I marked out when he used cattle mutilation. I missed that move.

  4. I am not a fan of delays, I don't think anyone really is, but like RROD said if it is really because the game needs more work than that is fine.

    A game that I really wanted to play was one called "Dreamkiller" which most people don't even remember, if they even knew about it last year when it was supposed to come out. It is out on Steam, but it was supposed to be available for xbox360 and that is really where I wanted to play it. The game got delayed a couple times and then was eventually never even copied onto any discs for 360. It was completed, actually it was written for 360 and I believe they had to port it to Steam, and they just never put it on any discs to be sold. I know it didn't score that well on meta-critic, but I was really excited for that game and was looking forward to it until all that happened.

    @favorite park

    I'm gonna assume you mean amusement park or that I can count that as my favorite park, and my answer would be Cedar Point, the best amusement park around.

      1. yeah I guess I don't understand why they do that kind of stuff. To me it seems like a no-brainer. The game is right there, it just has to be written to a disc, packaged, and sold. I'm not always sure what motivates whoever is in charge of these things to make some of the decisions they make like that.

        Dreamkiller is one that I probably won't ever understand. The game is right there ready for release but at the last minute they pull the plug on it. I would think it would be more worth it to just print of some copies of the game and at least make something off of it instead of not printing off any copies and guaranteeing that you will make nothing off of it and not have much to show for it.

  5. The first LittleBigPlanet. It was supposed to be out the day before my birthday and I was sooo psyched b/c nothing ever lands on it lol. Now the second LBP is delayed. Oh and Diablo III, I'm beginning to think it's a hoax too lol.

    And the biggest soul crusher is that I'm being delayed to get my hands on XIV. It's killing me, despite the low ratings I keep reading. Cause like 75% of my friends from XI have moved over ; ; and I wanna chat with them lol. I'm a sap.

  6. @Smartguy;

    I can't remember if it was you or someone else who was mentioning the BP oil spill a few months back, but in any case, take a look at this article and see if anything catches your eye towards the end.

    @topic;

    You're asking a guy who regularly plays games that are over two years old if it bothers me that games get delayed? And before anyone brings up Alan Wake and Halo Reach; one was a rental and the other one is an exception (since I'm a fan of the franchise. Come to think of it, Dead Rising 2 may also be an exception because I liked the first one.) So, no, it doesn't bother me that games are delayed.

    Hell, I'm still waiting for Starcraft: Ghost.

  7. I no longer place preorders down on Final Fantasy games after having FFXII be pushed back a full year after I’d already paid for it in full.

  8. I remember Mr. Molyneux had a project for the original Xbox call B.C. and it was in every magazine I read and the date was always TBD. Then one mag had a release date for about a year from date, then I read it got scrapped, I was bummed.

  9. @iceman

    That Alvarez character is probably going to get a lot of good deals in the future.

    1. Hell yeah.

      Never bite the hand that feeds you.

      But in all honesty, they are going above and beyond to keep their customers. Rebates, incentives, promotions, etc. How can we be upset with them when they are trying so hard to make it up to everyone?

  10. It sucks that NPD Group is giving out less information these days. Hardware figures are no longer given (for free anyway) and software doesn't break out by platform. Here's September's top 10. Maybe I'll give it its own article. Maybe not.

    1. Halo: Reach (Microsoft, Xbox 360) 3,300,000

    2. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP)

    3. Dead Rising 2 (Capcom, 360, PS3, PC)

    4. NHL 11 (Electronic Arts, 360, PS3)

    5. FIFA Soccer 11 (Electronic Arts, 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, NDS)

    6. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Square Enix, PSP)

    7. Mafia II (Take-Two 360, PS3, PC)

    8. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (Activision Blizzard, PS3, 360, NDS, Wii)

    9. Metroid: Other M (Nintendo, Wii)

    10. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, 360, PS3, PC)

    1. I didn't expect to see Spider-Man: Shatter Dimensions on this list. Halo of course was expected to be #1, but I would have loved to see it put up higher number than that. Personally I prefer Halo over CoD so I of course want to see Halo sell better.

      1. Oh I'm not trying to imply that that isn't a lot of copies, but CoD2 sold 4 million in 24 hours, Halo: Reach didn't even do that in 1 month. And I'm sure CoD: Black Ops will sell very well too. It's not about specific numbers, I just would like Halo to outsell CoD.
