Coffee Talk #217: Who’s Your Favorite Videogame Voice Actor?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Intelligentsia’s El Salvador El Ausol Honeyed Pacamara, Golden Boy Promotions suing Top Rank Promotions, or how the lawsuit is horrible for (the already messed up) sport of boxing, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Today’s column was inspired by RPadholic bsukenyan’s wish for more Judi Dench in videogames. While I was terribly amused by his wish, I also wondered about your favorite videogame voice actors and actresses. At the very least, strong performances can cover up some weak scriptwriting. At best, great voice acting can truly bring a game’s story to life. As for my favorite, it’s definitely the legendary Cam Clarke.

I became a Cam Clarke fan from his work as Maximillian Sterling and (especially) Lance “Lancer” Belmont in the Robotech cartoons. As I started paying attention to acting in videogames, I noticed that his name popped up…a lot. The man has performed in more than 100 games! From Metal Gear Solid to Baldur’s Gate to God of War to World of Warcraft to Assassin’s Creed, chances are you’ve played dozens of games Clarke has acted in.

Now it’s your turn! Who are some of your favorite videogame voice actors and actresses?

  1. David Hayter. Great work

    Master Chief voice, whoever it was I liked it.

    Legacy of Kain actors.

    Arkham Asylum actors. Great work.

  2. I thought Nolan North was the only video game voice actor.

    @Andy Reid

    Someone up top finally talked some sense into Andy and made him start the better QB.

    @Braylon Edwards

    Sigh, when will they learn?

  3. besides Mr. Hayter, Mr. Hamill, and Mr. Conroy. i don't really pay attention to who voice acts.

    @GBP and Top Rank

    Yeah i heard about this. The greedy only fighting to get more greedy. I just wish they would finally work out a Pacquiao v Mayweather before Mayweather goes to jail.

    @RROD

    yeah what's even more dumb is that they were discussing some of the perks provided by the league to players by the CBA, and one of them is a driving service with an armed guard where the player or team isn't charged. The service is free! it makes you think how ignorant people can be at times. If i was in the NFL i would be using that service everytime.

  4. @tokz what made it even dumber is the fact that he got pulled over because he had too dark of tint on his windows

  5. @redtailman

    oh yeah?!?! i forgot about that one. everyone knows cops love to pull over people for excessively dark tints, so why put them on your car.

  6. I also have to chose Nolan North mostly for Uncharted 1 & 2, but Assassins Creeds helped

    I do believe he has had a voice in just about every video game possible. I didn't know he was in Halo ODST, Halo 3, Halo Wars, God of War, Final Fantasy 12 & 13, Dragon Age: Origins, Mafia 2, Singularity, The Resistance series, both Lost Planets, Army of Two 2, Gears 2, Transformers series, Ratchet and Clank ACIT, The Saboteur.

    He is one busy guy.

  7. I'd like to hear more of Gilbert Gotfried in games.

    I think Michael Ironside has done a great job as Sam Fischer. Other than that… See the usual suspects listed above.

  8. I liked the girl who did Cortana in the Halo series, and her role as Zoey in Left 4 Dead. Actually I liked all the voices for the L4D and L4D2 characters. And I too was a fan of Master Chief's voice throughout the series.

    I would still love to hear more Judi Dench, though. haha.

  9. Oh yeah, Slicky mentioned Liam Neeson in the Bioshock Infinite article.

    Everything is cooler with Liam Neeson.

  10. @Vick: From a purely football standpoint, if you traded away your franchise QB so you could let the guy you thought was your next franchise QB play, you cannot bench him after 2 quarters worth of football against one of the top 5 teams in the NFL for a guy who performed well in garbage time of one game, and just barely well enough to beat the Lions. It's insane. It's going to backfire. And I don't know how Kevin Kolb stays with the Eagles at this point.

  11. I really enjoy Mike Ironside ( Sam Fisher) and the dude that does Optimus Prime's voice. Basically I love to shake the walls with bass.

  12. Just had to pay $815 for front end wheel bearings on my truck. Might not be buying any games til Christmas. Ouch.

  13. @Smartguy;

    You should shop around. I have like three different mechanics I take my truck to depending on what needs to be done to it. Also, see if you can buy the wheel bearings on your own since oftentimes, the people installing the part will jack up the price of the part since they think that you think you have no other option. Also, make sure you get a written gaurantee on their work for a specific amount of time.

    I have a '97 Ford Explorer that I've had since high school. I'm pretty sure she'll last me another 10 years if I keep taking care of her. Hopefully, I’ll be able to drive her to L.A. if we ever get together for a Padilla Party. I’ve always wanted to drive across the country. I just needed an excuse to do so… and possibly stop by SlickFat’s restaurant. I have arteries that need clogging.

  14. @Iceman

    They were nice enough to remachine the rotors for free and threw in new ceramic pads.

    I have a 1500HD so the damn bearings were nearly $800 each. They come in an assembly unit. Trust me if it were as simple as it was on my old truck I'd have not worried with it. The newer trucks all have whole assembly units. The bearings, ABS, etc are all built into one hub unit. It's ridiculous. I really had no clue until today that it worked like that.

    Funny thing….if I had the non HD version of my truck the bearings would have ONLY been $240 each.

    Don't worry though….that truck is used for work purposes……so ya know. :)

  15. @Arguello I like Charles. I randomly bumped into him at the Tower Records newsstand in San Francisco and got an interview out of it. He said, "Excuse me. Do you know much about these videogame magazines? I'm trying to get into them."

  16. @Ray

    Thats pretty crazy how the world works in weird ways like that. He's always seemed like a nice guy. It must be pretty cool to be famous on that level and not have a lot of people recognize you in person.
