Coffee Talk #169: Your Favorite Game of the First Half of 2010

2010 is halfway over! Since it’s halftime, I wanted to see what your favorite game of 2010 was, thus far. It has been a very unusual year for the videogame business with so many outstanding games released in the first half of the year. Which one was your favorite?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Twilight: Eclipse taking over the world this week, Tony La Russa supporting the tea party, or Funny People, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As for me, not much has changed from Q1 2010. I’ve enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins Awakening, Heavy Rain, and Final Fantasy XIII the most. If I had to go with one, I’d pick Dragon Age, though I’m surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed FFXIII the more I’ve played it.

Now it’s your turn! Let’s have it ladies and gents. What has been your favorite game of 2010 so far?

  1. 1. God of War III

    2. Heavy Rain

    3. Red Dead Redemption

Speaking of Heavy Rain, I just finished my 2nd play through of it and I enjoyed it more the 2nd time around. I learned more of the story this time that I didn't pick up on the 1st time. And of course I did things different and got a completely different story too. Heavy Rain is brilliant, just brilliant.

  2. I can't think of a game that is actually from the first half 2010. I have really enjoyed the L4D series which I had not played until the first half of 2010, same with The Orange Box and Army of Two: The 40th Day.

Maybe in a few months I will be on to the games from the first half of 2010.

  3. @rrod

in the "underwater" scene…can you make dude die?

  4. 3 way tie for me. SMG2 (#1 if my tie doesn't count), Splinter Cell Conviction, and finally BFBC2. I feel that I definitely got my money's worth from those titles. I'm hoping to be gifted God of War for my birthday in July. If not, I'll just buy it.

  5. God of War 3 with SMG2 coming close. I've been playing it a little bit more often now, with my gf hogging up my PS3 to finish GoW3. She finished it a last week or a couple of weeks ago. it was great seeing the end of that game again. it made me realize that it was a really great series.

    @smartguy

if you don't get it for bday, let me know. maybe i can register as a vendor on Amazon and you can use Rpad's links! win win for us all.

  6. @Thundercracker

Lauren can die in that scene but Scott can't. Once you kick the door out Scott will automatically swim to safety. You can choose to save Lauren or let her die.

  7. she died the first time for me, ive heard theres an ending where you dont solve the crime..i totally might play that game again this weekend

  8. n8r and i are totally eye to eye here, RDR for me right now, GOW3 was a bit underwhelming relative to my ridiculous expectations

  9. @ Off topic

Am I the only person here that thinks Shane Carwin has a good chance of beating Brock Lesner on Saturday? Or, am I being logical?

    @ Thundercracker

I created a playlist of music strictly for RDR. It consists of some Bon Jovi, Gene Autry, Hank Williams, "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera, and "Renegade" by Styx to name a few.

Oh… and "Wild Wild West" by Kool Moe Dee.

  10. @ Ray

Me too. I think the "Rampage Jackson principle of ring rust" is gonna catch up to Brock. I'll be impressed if he pulls it out.

  11. @n8r

i think carwin has a damn good shot, but i do not expect brock to have any rust. I simply think hes a better stand up fighter

  12. @n8r

that sounds like a cool playlist. as far as Brock, i want him to lose. I'm tired of Comcast On Demand always talking about his matches with the WWE. It makes it seem like they were great when they were just meh. I never liked him in the WWE.

  13. @other topics

I didn't like funny people. it was more depressing and weird than funny.

Eclipse taking over the world again, here's a link how a midnight show with pre-teens and obssessed fans goes wrong.

I thought Tony La Russa supported the immigration law in Arizona. I didn't hear anything about the Tea Party? Is that Arizona law, a tea party initiative?

Lastly, I'm tired of reading and hearing that LeBron is coming to Chicago. We all know it's not happening.

  14. @ Thundercracker

Brock actually learned the stand up later. He was the NCAA wrestling champion for the University of Minnesota. He's got ground game for sure, but the thing is… when any of those guys get the taste of knocking someone out, it seems to become addictive. Let's face it, the crowd would rather see a KO than a tap out.

    @ tokz

I always thought he was incredibly mediocre in WWE as well. The only reason I see to push guys like that, is to create a bigger upset later for guys like Rey Mysterio. If Rey beats Brock, the crowd goes nuts and can really add to Rey's character.

    (just one example)

  15. @n8r

yeah i guess i typed that wrong, i meant that carwin has the better stand up

  16. @n8r

I forgot rey and lesnar wrestled. I think his character grew more when he beat the Big Show or JBL. i don't remember story lines because i didn't watch smackdown that often but those feud vids were better with JBL or Big Show.

  17. @Heavy Rain

I never got past the part where the chick is in her apartment after the dream. I don't know why I never picked it back up, now I haven't because I lost my saved game.

  18. I have spent the majority of this year on BF:BC2. I haven't been back on it in a while though, since I have been playing 3D Dot Game Heroes and now Singularity.

  19. Brock is just too damn big. I look for him to pummel Carwin like he did Frank Mir.

  20. didnt brock lose to frank mir?

i mean he did pummel him, but he got caught in an ankle lock, i see what you were saying

  21. I'm such a horrible gamer… even worse than Bsukenyan. I'm still stuck in 2009! The only games I've played this year are ODST, Gears of War 2, Halo 3 (Multiplayer), The Lost and Damned and now I'm working on Ballad of Gay Tony. Plus, I still have Bayonetta and Fallout 3 in my queue.

I miss my college days where I didn't do anything but play games. Screw responsibility! It's cutting in way too much into my game time.

    -M

  22. @Iceman Nothing with having great games in your backlog (more on that in tomorrow's Coffee Talk). There's so much great stuff out there and we have other responsibilities. Sadly, I did not win the lottery last night, which pushes back my dream of playing games and blogging from an island in Thailand.

  23. @ Thundercracker

Mir caught Brock in the anklelock in their first fight, but Brock pummeled him in the rematch.

    @ Smartguy

Carwin is a behemoth as well. The thing that I think gives Carwin the advantage is that Brock hasn't fought in like a year or more and had those medical issues that didn't allow him to keep his training regiment up.

The jury is however, still out… I just favor Carwin.

  24. @Iceman

I agree with rpad. You'll always have something to play during slow months. I have a lot of games that i've put off for awhile.

  25. @topic: Mass Effect 2, closely followed by both Red Dead Redemption and God of War III.

  26. You'd think I'd have a favorit, but I don't. (Doesn't help that I got a double doose of Bioware this year)

P.S. We are now under #100,000
