Coffee Talk #164: Five Things That (Sadly) Weren’t at E3 2010

As brilliant as E3 2010 was, there were a few things I was hoping to see that didn’t make it. In some cases, perhaps they were just rumors. In other cases, the publisher wanted to save the game for another trade show. Whether the product is too early or the development team is in disarray, I was still bummed not to see the following.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, American football (soccer) totally rocking, 10+ hours matches at Wimbledon, or whether sleeping with a Kardashian results in a championship, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As brilliant as E3 2010 was, there were a few things I was hoping to see that didn’t make it. In some cases they were just rumors. In other cases the publisher wanted to save the game for another trade show. Whether the product is too early or the development team is in disarray, I was still bummed not to see the following.

  1. Windows Phone 7 and Xbox Live: Microsoft has a ton of work to do if it wants to successfully compete with Apple iOS, Google Android, and Palm WebOS. Connectivity with Xbox Live  is one way Windows Phone 7 can stand out.
  2. The Last Guardian: This was on my most wanted list going into the show. I was severely bummed it wasn’t there.
  3. Beyond Good & Evil 2: So many writers were sure this game was going to be at the show. It wasn’t. Never trust game writers (verbal entertainers are another story).
  4. PSP2: I was pretty sure this wasn’t going to happen at this year’s show. Going head-to-head with Nintendo’s 3DS outing would have been silly. Still, I really wanted to see what changes Sony planned to make with its second at-bat in portable gaming.
  5. Final Fantasy Tactics (iPhone): Shortly before the show started, I heard that my favorite game of all time was headed for the iPhone. While Square Enix showed a teaser video of the iPhone version of FFT, I really wanted to get my hands on it. Oh well, it’s only a few months away.

Now it’s your turn! Was there anything you were expecting to “see” at E3 2010 that no-showed? Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

  1. Just the PSP2. I saw everything i wanted to see.

    @Wimbledon match

    I'm not sure how to take the news of this. Either they were too good for each other or just bad enough for each other.

    @Kardashian booty brings luck

    I wouldn't know but i wish i could find out. Wasn't Reggie w/Kim last year 2009?? I think it was more him not being with her as much that i think helped him focus the most. Like Mick told Rocky, "women weaken legs!"

  2. @Tokz

    It would be hard to focus on anything but her if she were around. Ass, paparazzi, etc. lol.

    @E3

    I was actually looking forward to seeing how Nintendo was gonna hock the vitality sensor. Not because I was anticipating its release but just to see what they came up with. I'm glad they didn't go the Sony route and tell you to buy a bunch of extra hardware so you can enjoy the full potential of their machine.

  3. @Ray

    I went to the walmart near where I'm vacationing and they only had the 16gb in stock. No dice for me.

  4. @ E3

    I don't know why but I really didn't follow E3 just what the gals and gals on RPAD.TV were commenting on.

  5. I would have loved to hear more about the Win Mobile 7, but I would just love to hear more about that in general. I did expect to hear about more than they talked about just because it is supposed to be linked to the 360.

  6. @ Tokz

    Lmao that was a major typo that I missed, but gal on gal is the troof!!!

  7. Oh, damn, Final Fantasy Tactics for iPhone would make me upgrade to an iPhone 4 just so I could have enough battery life to play the game for hours and hours on end, just like I did on my Game Boy Advance.

    On a side note; do you guys know that Gamestop is offering a $100 trade-in for your old 360 towards the purchase of the new Xbox 360 "slim"? That's $200 for a new 360 by turning in your old 20GB Pro model!

    Aside from wetting my pants from excitement, I'm kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop (so to speak) because it almost seems like one of those "too good to be true" kind of deals. If I were to get a wireless N adapter and a 120 GB HDD for my current Xbox, that would cost over $200 (retail). Instead, I can take that money, turn in my old Xbox and get a brand-new one with an integrated wireless adapter AND a 250 GB hard drive. That's a total steal!

    God, I love it when Microsoft screws you over so bad in the beginning, that when a slightly less worse deal comes along, you think it's the greatest thing ever.

  8. No showed, not really. There was plenty of stuff that I didn't hear much about though. (Actually, everything I wanted to hear more about got glossed over in the first presser and didn't really come up again.)

  9. Amazon has two awesome Square Enix PSP games on sale. They're both among my favorite games of all time.

  10. Kingdom Hearts 3 would have been a pleasant surprise. Agent is something that is supposed to be pretty good and I don't recall hearing or seeing anything about that.

    I was stoked to see some game play for True Crime. TC:NY makes it in my top five favorite games of all time.

  11. @All (especially those on the West coast)

    http://www.sunnykoda.com/L2PUSA/index.html

    I read about this on the rant section of the little-gamers.com app on my iTouch and thought this sounded really cool. Makes me wish I lived on the West coast already. Nevertheless I thought I would at least share this with everyone else here in case anyone else thought this was a cool idea or something. I thought this was an interesting

  12. (it posted before I wanted it to)

    concept, but I also love documentaries, especially those that are tech related.

  13. @ BSU

    I'm about an hour or 2 off of his route, or else I'd hit him up. However,

    @ Ray

    This thing that BSU posted could be an awesome way to promote the website. He's be a fool not to put you in it.

  14. @N8

    That's a little of what I was thinking. I didn't really know what his route would be or the specific location of some the rpad-a-holics out West, but no matter what this would be a great opportunity to try and promote the site even more.

    Get Ray and the site in the documentary and I'm sure plenty of people who would be exposed would visit the site. Not to mention help promote a documentary about the culture of gaming (a topic I would love to work with myself someday).

    If he were doing a nationwide thing I would definitely offer to put him up for a night or two, alas I am not in L.A. yet…hopefully someday soon though.

  15. @ Bsukenyan;

    We need to do something like that on the east coast. From Maine to Miami. Great idea. I agree, also, that Mr. Padilla should check this guy out. It would be great exposure.
