Coffee Talk #157: E3 Games That Excite You

E3 is next week! There are going to be oodles and oodles of fantastic games at E3 2010 — some of them you know about already and others are sure to surprise. I want to know what games you’re looking forward to learning more about at this year’s show. Shoot off one game you know about and one game you’re hoping for.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the NXT invasion, Elton John singing at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding, or your prediction for the NBA finals, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As for me, I can’t wait to see more of The Last Guardian for PlayStation 3. I loved Ico and really liked Shadow of the Colossus. I can’t wait to see what Team Ico does next! As for surprise titles…I can’t really say right now. The one I’m looking forward to the most is something that was told to me off the record. *tease*

So let me know what E3 2010 games you’re looking forward to (please)!

  1. Looking forward to hearing about inFAMOUS 2.

    Surprise me with a something as big as Uncharted 2 was. (asking a lot)

  2. @ Ray or Rpad or Rpinoy

    I'm really interested in the new Deus EX game and Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2.

  3. the new Zelda for the wii. inFamous 2. Killzone 3. oh and more screens, vids, or acutal gameplay of SW: The old republic.

    @WWE

    I thought the ending was awesome. I can't believe there were some people crying. This is a great angle they have going. Maybe they can be the new Nation of Domination. haha. I only said that because they're wearing those "N" armbands like the nation would.

  4. excitebike….had to do it

    @Ray

    can you tell us who told you this off the record? Can you tell us what platform we can expect this game on?

    Ive heard a rumor about "vice city 2"

    can you categorically deny that this game is NOT "vice city 2"? Or do you have no comment?

    And by "no comment" Im going to assume that you are aware of the existance of "vice city 2" and are confirming that it is indeed real and that it will be announced at e3…this will lead me to email dan houser and tell him that raymond padilla told me about this game and that he should just come clean about it

    in all seriousness…vice city 2 would be better than awesome, it would be a new word that ive just made up….it would be "superion"

  5. I'm not looking forward to any games really. I'm interested in new hardware actually.

    I'm waiting til after fiscal year close out before I start buying games and staying up late. July 1st will be good for me.

  6. @tokz

    Raw had some corny moments last night but that ending was incredible. That was the shake up that Raw needed. It reminded me of the Outsiders/NWO take over of WCW. They could do great things with this. I'm really looking forward the new season of NXT tonight. I like NXT more than I like Smackdown and was starting to like it more than Raw. This season's "rookies" seem to have more potential than last season's "rookies", except for Kaval(Senshi/Low-Ki). He has the personality of a door knob.

    @Raymond Padilla

    I don't keep up with ROH but is there ANYBODY in ROH that has personality?

    @Topic

    I'm still hoping to see Twisted Metal. I also really want to see Starhawk(Warhawk 2), The Last Gaurdian, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, Dead Space 2, Resistance 3, and LBP 2.

  7. I need your help everyone. I'm trying to decide between Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption. I've played RDR but i'm not really impressed with it and i liked the first SMG. Which game should i get???

  8. @RROD

    I saw the beginning of it and wasn't impressed then Rampage and that other guy keeping their A-team characters during the mission of looking for Jerry's crown was lame. What happened to Bret? Is his reign as Raw GM over already??? I only watch the beginning of Raw and end now. I'm glad my gf was done playing GOW3 so i could watch the ending. I had to go to WWE.com to watch how it started.

  9. Hey dude I would go with Sub Machine Gun 2, seeing as how you really didn't like RDR.

  10. @tokz

    At your comment #8 I think you answered your own question.

    You didn't miss much. This guest host stuff is getting lamer by the week. The fan choice thing was good but there was just too much of the lame A-Team gimmick. The even got Dusty Rhodes and I.R.S. involved in that nonsense.

  11. SMG2. So fun. Nintendo did a great job…now if it could just be upscaled to at least 720p…

  12. @Big Blak

    sub machine gun 2! ha!

    @RROD

    well i really only played it for a couple of hours and people are insisting i should play the mini games like poker and hunting. they make the game more fun. I really don't like the multiplayer aspect of this game. so if people such as n8r and other rdr lovers have more reasons on why i should give this game one more try i will be willing to do it. I just got an amazon gc so i'm buying a game regardless.

  13. Half Life 2 Episode 3…heard rumors about that one, and am interested in it even though my experiences with Half Life thus far have not been satisfactory. Portal 2 and more DLC for both L4D games would be interesting news as well, but that will probably not be at E3.

  14. @Iceman

    What?!? Seriously?!? Vice City was the last GTA that I liked. I'd be super excited about that.

  15. @bsukenyan

    It looks bleak for Episode 3 currently.

    "Gabe said the surprise isn't Episode 3"

    I have never liked Half-Life games. I bought one (I think it was Halflife 2, started in a train station) for PC one time and I kept getting stuck during a chase type scene while in a buggy in a sewer pipe. At the same spot each time the game locked up. I tried a reinstall, tried customer service. Nothing worked and will never play one again.

    Portal 2 sounds good though.

  16. Thank you very much everyone for your help. I just bought SMG2 along with other miscellaneous (sp?) things, let me know if you see my random orders come through RPAD.

  17. @ Slicky;

    I never said anything about liking GTA Vice City being the last GTA game I liked.

    Well, I liked it because the game was based in an 80's version of Miami and I recognized a lot of the landmarks, but I also liked GTA IV. Personally, I feel that all GTA games have at least one glaring flaw that I have to overlook in order for me to think of them as near-perfect games.

    -M

  18. @Iceman

    Oh no I meant I liked it and haven't liked one since.

    The "what seriously" part was just about the rumor of a new one.

  19. @Slicky

    I am not too much of a fan of the Half Life series either, I wish I could understand what is so appealing about the series though. I do love Valve's work though and have played it extensively. I like their other work, I just don't get excited over Half Life. It looks cool, cool idea and everything…but it doesn't do it for me.

    I think you got farther than I am at in Half Life 2 though, I might play through the episodes that are on The Orange Box someday, but every time I think of doing that, Team Fortress 2 calls my name and convinces me to play that instead.

    *Rant about The Orange Box real quick*

    I don't like how it has five games on there but it only shows up as one item on my 360 dashboard. I am almost done with all of the TF2 achievements, and instead of having a completed game to add to the list all I will have is a few achievements out 99 on TOB instead. I understand why it is displayed like that, but I would also like to have TF2 show up under my completed games list, whenever that happens, as well.

  20. @ Bsukenyan;

    I guess it's like Hasbro Family Game Night in the way it handles the achievements. They are all lumped together even if you've only bought one game (like Scrabble).

    And to answer your question, Half Life gets it's charm from 1998. It was evolutionary when it came out. You could argue that some of its popularity today is still riding on that game released back in 1998 when other games that have come out since then have surpassed it. I enjoyed Half Life (and Opposing Force and Blue Shift) back in the day and was looking forward to Half Life 2. Episode One was a bit of a disappointment, but Episode Two started to pick things up a bit. What really pisses me off is the major cliffhanger ending at the end of Episode Two and the excruciatingly long time it is taking to come out with Episode Three. Portal is my favorite game in the Orange Box. It's a shame you don't have TF2 for the PC, because I'd love to join you for a few matches.

  21. I HATE HULU!!!! I let it buffer for right at a minute to fill the 5 bars and then I get to watch it for 1 and a half minutes before I have to pause it and buffer again.

  22. @Iceman

    I think Valve relied too much on that nostalgia for the second one. Honestly it seemed that 3/4 of the game was nothing but NPCs saying "Wow, Gordon Freeman!". "WHOA, IT'S GORDON FREEMAN!!"

    They should have did a better job bringing younger gamers or ppl who just missed out on the original into the fold to see why everyone was so in awe of the free man.

  23. @Iceman

    Yeah Hasbro Family Game Night is a good comparison, I also feel the same way about that game now that I think about it. It's not really a necessity, I only want it for the vanity of being able to show off that I fully completed another game (of course that's really all the gamerscore and achievement/trophy systems are for, so I don't feel too bad for wanting the games to appear separately).

    With Half Life I do remember friends of mine going crazy about the game when I was younger (but still a couple of years after it came out) and it never really impressed me much then as well. However, I really did not get to see a whole lot of the story unfold at that time. I know the series has a lot of die hard fans, but like smartguy said, a lot of what I played for the first portion was simply people marveling at the fact that I was Gordon Freeman. I think due to the large amounts of time between game releases it would have been nice for Valve to do something more to grab newer players who never played the first game.

    Do you play TF2 through steam? I might have to look in to that sometime to see how it plays on a computer instead of my 360. Although TOB on 360 is a great deal…lol.

  24. @Smartguy

    I've never played the first one and 2 didn't do it for me. It has no meat to it and is a simple go here, go here, go here shooter. You didn't really do anything in it that made a difference within the context of the story. Black Messa has me interested since it is a remake of the first one and I kind of want to know why this series has a fanbase because what I've played wasn't anything spectacular.

  25. @bsukenyan

    I tried it during a free weekend and you pretty much HAVE to play with mouse and keyboard. The left analog stick was the only thing that worked on my 360 controller. My PC handles all their games with ease, but that could be different for you. (My PC= Phenom II and a GTX285)

  26. @Sandrock

    Man I wish I could just hook up my 360 controller. It has been a while since I have used a mouse and keyboard for a video game. I hate using a mouse with my laptop and I don't yet have a desktop (but I want to build one in the near future). I don't know how my laptop would handle the games though, and that would be my biggest concern.

    Although it is pretty impractical and I really don't know the logistics of how game servers work, but in a gaming utopia it would be great to be able to play with people on different systems. i.e. me playing TF2 with iceman with him on his PC and me on my 360. Not gonna happen, but I can dream.

  27. e3 game i just read about…street fighter vs tekken…

    would that be 2d or 3d?

  28. @thundercracker

    where did you see that? I think that game would encompass both 2d and 3d.

  29. @ Thundercracker and tokz

    I can imagine the sequel now:

    SF vs Tekken vs MK vs Soul Caliber vs DC Universe vs Marvel vs Tatsunoko vs SNK vs Karate Champ.

  30. @n8r

    Karate Champ! Ha. I just found that game again on my iphone. I can't believe how many quarters i used to pump into this machine.

  31. @thundercracker

    thanks for the link. I think it would be better to make it a namco vs capcom thing. it could be more epic than it sounds already. I can't wait to play as Pac-man!!!!

  32. lol@pac man

    @stephen strasburg

    dude is the truth, i cant wait to see him pitch against a real major league team….

    lol n8r im kidding, im an orioles fan

  33. @n8r

    as bad as the pirates losing to a CC is. the cubs are being pwned by them right now, at least you have that bright spot.

  34. @ tokz

    1) We lost to Manatee last year. We actually won this year.

    2) We always seem to match up well against the Cubbies.

    3) I think the Cubs are slacking a bit this year. They could do better, but seem to be phoning it in.

  35. @ tokz

    Another factor to weigh in is that our owner (the devil himself, Bob Nutting) is actually under investigation by the league this year for making much more money than he should for having such a terrible team.

    You're gonna see some differences in our performance because of that.

  36. the pirates actually have a wealth of young talent…wait till that pedro alvarez kid comes up to go along with mccutchen

  37. Yep… Marlins too.

    It's unsportsmanlike BS and further tarnishes the reputation of pro baseball. These bastard owners need to be stopped.

  38. @ Thundercracker

    That's because Nutting was planning on trading them as soon as they showed their potential.

    They can make good picks, it's just that the math tells them they'll make more money by trading them rather than keeping them and winning games.

  39. @thundercracker

    I'm not saying that the Pirates don't have talent. The cubs have benefitted from some former Pirate players. It's just that the owners don't want to pay them once their rookie deals are up. This isn't something recent either this goes back all the way to Bonds back in 1993 or 1994. It's sad.
