This Weeks’ Videogame Releases

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is out, exclusively for Wii. Are you one of those people that said Shigeru Miyamoto is “out of touch” and that the gaming business has passed him by? If so, explain why this game is so great. In other exclusive news, ModNation Racers is hitting both Sony platforms. Lastly, UFC Undisputed 2010 and Blur are hitting multiple platforms.

Any of you guys and dolls picking up any of this week’s new games?

  1. I can't wait to get SMG 2…but it won't be anytime soon. I'll be getting B: AA GOTY soon. I have to priortize that game first.

  2. Probably gonna get Mod Nation Racer. Gonna rent it first to see how different it is from the Beta I tried. I also got the demo for it but my console crapped out before I got to try it, so renting it tomorrow will be easier than downloading it again.

I quit being a big fan of Mario games after the SNES went to the wayside. I still think the SNES had some of the greatest games Nintendo has released.

    Don't know anything about Blur.

UFC '09 didn't interest me enough to try out 2010 version. (already went down this road with Iron Man 2 and it was horrid)

  3. Got a text yesterday from Gamestop that said my copy of UFC 2010 will be ready for pick up on 5/25. I wonder what that meant…?

  4. @Big Blak

hahaha. You forgot you reserved it. at the age of 24 and forgetting things already.

  5. @ Willy Nelson

Lmao that was a joke. I don't think I'm losing it yet…….where am I…..I'm scared.

  6. @ All

I watched this show over the weekend called Fear Itself, it was pretty suspenseful/creepy. Has any one else seen this show before?

    How bout them Blackhawks?

How bout them Celtics? I think they will close it out tonight but not by 30 points.

Mike Brown is one of the most successful coaches in the NBA right now, I think his total win/loss is 314-177, well above the average. I honestly think that he was the problem but the coach has to be the scapegoat. He might get a ring before Lebron (I can hope can't I?).

  7. God, i want a Wii so bad just to play my mario games I missed. Including the galaxy series. But unfortunately, i still got to grab Red Dead and Alan Wake, and I'm too busy catching up to the lost series finale. ugh. what a way to start the summer.

  8. @ All

I'm pumped, I don't have to work today and I will have UFC 2010 in about a hour! The only drag is its almost 90 degrees and its soooooo humid. Oh well, I can't wait to create the ultimate fighter. I think my first is going to be a Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu fighter. If you know anything about MMA you know that combo is deadly if perfected.

  9. @ My recent gaming hustle

So I saw someone playing Red Dead Redemption on JTV… and I have to have it. I'm getting the shakes (and I know you all know what I'm talking about).

So, I went to Gamestop yesterday and everything I had that I felt may be worth trading in… wasn't enough. So, I'm trying to convince my mom to get it for me through Amazon (using Ray's links of course), but it will take a few days she said. Regardless, I know the shakes will stop once it's in the mail.

  10. @ Big Blak

I prefer kickboxers to Muay Thai, but from what I hear the training isn't as distinct as it was in 2009. You can mix and match styles more so you can have all the grapple perks on Muay Thai and all the toe to toe perks of a kickboxer.

    @ Smartguy

Completely different artforms. Yes, you can generalize them both as fighters, but the rules are totally different. It's like comparing a rock drummer to a jazz drummer. Sure you can call them both drummers or (even broader) musicians… but the rules are totally different.

We would have seen what happened when Mayorga faced Din Thomas… but leave it to Don King to screw that up.

  11. @N8R

Pacquiao would kill Machida (sp?). Rules are rules yes….but for some reason most ppl have a mental block thinking that boxers just stand still and don't know how to move quickly. From all the MMA ppvs I have seen, a majority of the guys just throw punches.

  12. Also…why the argument or bring up the rules? MMA has different fighting forms. They don't just match up judo with judo and etc. The point is valid.

  13. @ N8R & SG

I was going to say the same, but there are a lot of boxers who would bang on mma fighters and vise versa.

  14. @ Smartguy

I'm just not one to throw the book out on either one of them because I feel there is better out there. I'm not a snob like that. i.e "I only want the best and have little to know interest in the rest" or "This sucks because I've seen better"… is a pretty snobby attitude in my opinion. I personally don't want to go down as that type of dude.

I try to see the positive merits of anything I look at and judge it or them as an individual based on that. Granted, there are situations where the negatives outweigh the positives.

I assumed you were going by a standard in comparing 2 things that really ought not be compared. In which case, the difference in rules slay any preformed standard.

Saying "this boxer would beat this MMA fighter" is as mythical to me as saying "Darth Vader would pwn Superman".

  15. @ Smartguy

Also, saying a welterweight boxer against light-heavy weight MMA fighter shows jadedness. I think Pacquiao vs Anderson Silva would be more interesting of a mythical scenario.

  16. @n8r

machida was the first that came to mind. Silva would get pwned by Manny or Money

  17. @ Smartguy

I don't know, once Silva scored the takedown it's a different scenario.

I suppose if you confined Silva to boxing RULES (wink, wink), it's a different outcome.

I get the feeling that Dana White would be all for cross-promotion. But I doubt a boxing promoter in their right mind would go for it.

  18. @N8R

I don't think he could score a takedown. Bear in mind, Manny knocks professional boxers out whilst wearing padded gloves. He could conceivably one shot Silva. Vice versatile of course but the odds are with Manny imo.

I think White may be a roadblock as well. If a boxer destroys his premier talent, his ppv takes a sales hit in the future.

  19. @ Smartguy

This is probably worthy of a poll.

MMA gloves are padded too and people get one shotted all the time. The padding was never in either case to make punches softer, it's so you don't break your hand and the dudes face. The same force and momentum is going to collide with your face when struck, but for the object moving with it (the fist), it makes a big difference. I know you understand the physics there.

MMA fighters are more adaptable then boxers. They have a different approach. They study the opponents strengths and flaws and adapt their styles accordingly. If they know they're going against a puncher, they will bide their time by dancing around until they can score the takedown and attempt the armbar or kimura (if they know their ground game is weak).

One thing boxers never need to worry about is whether or not their opponent is behind them. In MMA or anything else where grappling is involved, that's a big deal. There's HUGE advantages from being behind your opponent that the rules of boxing voided out.

  20. @N8R

    boxing gloves have more padding.

Boxers adapt as well. Boxers keep their opponent in front.

  21. @ Smartguy

Boxing gloves have more padding (obvious statement as if I hadn't noticed) because they throw more punches and don't need to grasp. But still, the purpose is to protect the person punching more than the person being hit.

Of course boxers adapt, but they have no reason to learn how to sprawl over a person grabbing at your legs. And, they keep the opponent in front for offensive reasons instead of defensive reasons. Therefore, it is always in both boxers best interest to stay face to face… this is not the case in MMA where a rear naked choke will score the win.

  22. @N8R

ummm, it would be bad defense to let the guy get behind you. They adapt and study. I still do not believe a grappler will be able to execute a takedown except with a minimal chance of success. Boxers are very quick on their feet and even quicker with their punches.

  23. @ Smartguy

Watch a few GSP fights and get back to me.

If you can see this where you are, you could only imagine waht would happen if a boxer tried to clinch:

  24. @n8r

YouTube some Manny, Money, Trinidad, or even Klitschko and be honest if you think GSP could hold his own.

I've seen GSP on a few ppvs, impressive but I don't think he could take out any of the above mentioned.

For some reason I keep thinking of the wind up punch that Apollo did.

  25. @ Smartguy

I've seen all of those boxers. I'd like to state again that the rules and therefore training regiments are quite different.

I only brought up GSP because his takedowns are outstanding. The dude darts in with a blink of an eye and sweeps your legs over your head before you can realize what he did.

    Same site different article:

    http://www.nowboxing.com/2010/03/ufc-fighters-tha

The first guy he mentions is Anderson Silva for the same reason I mentioned Silva first.

  26. @n8r

he isn't fast enough. Let's not forget that an mma fighter would have to be equally as wary of the boxer's superior speed and punching power. They use their legs as much as their fists. Amazing athletes.

I do think that GSP is the best talent they have besides Lesnar.

  27. They're different sports. If you took the top five guys from the same weight class in each sport and had them fight 100 times, I'd bet that the MMA fighter wins in an MMA fight and the boxer wins in a boxing match at least 90% of the time.

  28. @Ray

boxer will win 90% of all types I think. Chuck Liddell made a career of straight up fist fighting. Tank Abbott before him. Chuck wouldn't do the ground thing.

  29. @smartguy You're wrong about Chuck. Comparing him to Tank Abbott is just preposterous. It's true that he got famous for striking and UFC has emphasized that aspect of the sport too much. However, Chuck was a great wrestler too and his takedown defense was extraordinary. The latter was what made him so tough to be in his prime. He was hard to take down. If you did take him down, he was great at getting back to his feet.

  30. Not picking any of these titles out, I might be the only one who isn't that interested in Alan Wake at the moment and has a 360 lol, but I am waiting on Left 4 Dead 2 to get here in the mail. I ordered it (through amazon) a couple days ago and hope it will get here sometime this week. Not that I really have any time to play it, but if I catch up on my homework I might play this weekend.

  31. @Ray

Chuck didn't like wrestling on the mat. He would stand up and let the other guy stand up so he could pummel them again. Just pointing out with those two (Tank and Chuck) that a ground game wasn't necessary to win in MMA. The ground game argument comes in whenever you mention someone who isn't in MMA competing in MMA. It wasn't a direct comparison of the two necessarily…just to illustrate that strikers who have no use for the ground game are just as successful in MMA.

If Herschel Walker can come in and win in his first go round convincingly, anything is possible. In contrast Canseco got totally worked over in his boxing debut…if you want to call it that.

I did like LIddell's approach though…wide stance and Captain Kirk hits.
