Coffee Talk #138: Should Sony Have Made a Play for Bungie/Respawn?

Last weekend I hung out with two industry friends that argued (separately) that Sony should have made a big-time play for Bungie or Respawn. (This is what game geeks do over coffee or lunch. It’s like when jocks get together and discuss what GM moves they’d make for their favorite NBA team. In both cases, none of the participants are qualified to steer the ship.) Their arguments were basically the same — although Killzone and Resistance are respectable franchises, it would have been killer for Sony to have its own Call of Duty or Halo, exclusively. Nabbing the creators of those franchises would have been huge.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, graciously recapping last night’s Lost for me, round two of the NBA playoffs, or Rasheed Wallace remembering how to play basketball for one night, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Today I want to invite you into the conversation. Pretend you’re a hotshot Sony executive. Looking through the retroscope, do you think it would have been wise to lay out a ton of money for exclusive deals with Bungie or Respawn? Are Resistance and Killzone big enough bullets for the company? How crazy would it have been if Bungie or Respawn became first-party studios for Sony? If you could only sign one of those companies, which one would it be (poll below)? How would you upstage Kaz Hirai at Sony’s E3 2010 press conference?

I can’t wait for all your answers today! Let’s make it fun!!!

  1. Respawn just because there is so much hype surrounding them at the moment and I seriously see them coming up with another blockbuster franchise ala call of duty. Bungie on the other hand….

  2. They couldn't have landed Bungie. Bungie has given the impression they want to go multi plat with their distancing themselves of MS.

They could have had a chance with Respawn, but I'm pretty sure Respawn wanted to be multiplat in order to show HUGE numbers if they ever release anything.

In other words, I don't see either of these companies chaining themselves to one machine going forward.

  3. wow ray you are right, that would have been a huge get for sony…but as long as the games are out for the ps3, im fine. I have an xbox, but i just dont use it, dont know why i got it really

  4. @thundercracker

i will require a whiteboard, 12 Sierra Nevada pale ales, a roll of dixie cups, and a phonebook without the front and back cover.

  5. I agree with those above me, I don't think either developer would've 'chained' themselves to Sony right now. To answer the poll, I chose Bungie. I think they've had a bigger impact on console gaming than IW/Respawn.

  6. I think that Respawn would make more sense. They could still go multi-platform but they can make more exclusives available first to PS3 than the 360. This would've made them a big player in FPS and with their free PSN even more Epic!

  7. I was going to say Bungie at first, but then I realized we have only seen Halo out of them for a LONG time and felt like they ran out of ideas when they released ODST. I still would like to play Reach but I am already setting myself up to be let down.

I don't know much about Respawn just that people went there recently.

Overall I have been extremely happy with Sony's exclusives and besides and there are very few 360 exclusive I'd like to see come over. But the ones I would like are L4Ds, Crackdown & EDF 2017.

  8. @ All

The question is if WE were in Sony's shoes who would we pick. I going with Respawn simply because of the sheer numbers (monetary and online players) they have created world wide.

  9. If I were Sony I would have made a move for Respawn. Bungie is pretty much known for Halo which is a Microsoft exclusive so Respawn can bring something new using the experience they gained from their COD franchise.

  10. @Everyone who clicked on My Urbanspoon Restaurant

Thank you, but they took away all of the like votes y'all made because they their computer detected fraudulent behavior. It's cool though something worked because we went from #92 in Texas to #59 as of today. BTW the menu is up now. I wrote and designed it so don't make fun.

Check it out and let me know if anyone has any suggestion. Thanks.

  11. @Big Blak

Those are multiplatform numbers. If Sony wants to push consoles they need someone who delivers the highest per console numbers. Bungie would be the best candidate for their higher sell ratio and for their much bigger name recognition. No one out side the know knows what Respawn is yet and everyone already knows who makes Halo games. Name and numbers win this race and Bungie has them both.

  12. @tokz

I'll be back to playing games regularly after this week when finals end. I have my A&P 2 lecture final tonight and an Alegbra final when I feel like taking it (it is a blow off class since I already have a Math degree).

I have never been to Chicago but every time Diners Drive-Ins and Dives does something up there it makes me want to just to a road trip over there.

  13. @slicky

kool. If you ever road trip it up here let me know and i'll show you where to get an awesome italian beef sandwich or combo.

  14. @ Slicky

Dude that menu is so user friendly that I almost placed an order

  15. @Big Blak

Thanks. Its the first time I made one in color. Usually they are BW because its cheaper to print. Oddly picking out the font is what took me the longest to do. I think i printed one in every font i could find.

  16. @smartguy

When i saw her get shot and she was almost on her deathbed in the sub, I was like smartguy must be like, " why won't you die!" it made me laugh a little inside.

  17. @tokz

I was quite pissed she didn't die. The selfish *&^%^% should have taken the bomb like Sayid did!!

  18. @smartguy

I thought for sure she was going to die. Jack didn't have time to perform any type of mending of the wound. She was bleeding and Jack wanted to apply pressure but then they discovered the bomb. next time you see her, she's on the beach and looks like fine but worried about Sawyer. what's up with that???

  19. @tokz

dumbass irrational kate crying over not being able to find him. seriously….i hope ole smokey gets her this week. or Claire.

  20. @NXT

That challenge was unfair. Big men can't do monkey bars too well. The little guys had a clear advantage.

  21. @smartguy

for real her crying is getting out of control. when she's with sawyer she thinks about jack and vice versa when she's with jack. I wouldn't like to see Claire get killed off.

    @RROD

there's a joke in there somewhere.

  22. @RRODisHere The flip side is that it's easier for the big guys to down soda.

@SlickyFats Can you email me some of your chicken-fried steak? That's my Vegas dish!

  23. Hey if anyone has mw2 for ps3, its double xp week! This is to celebrate the release of the dlc map pack.

  24. @Ray

I would love it if I could actually send y'all some food. I talked with my dad about that today. He said we could make it, put it in a togo box and send it, just be sure microwave it for 30 seconds and you're good. lol

  25. @smartguy

I don't see it happening anymore. I think Claire has snapped out of whatever trance she was in. She seemed pretty concerned when Smokey said that some of them were dead.

  26. @All

Anyone else who has the family game night disc, I am having a weird issue with my disc. It is playing just fine, but when I start the game up I get disconnected from XBL like there is an update, but not update comes and then sometimes I sign back in automatically and a couple times I had to sign back in manually. Anyone else ever have an issue like this?? It is confusing me because I have tried clearing my cache and trying to delete any updates I could have gotten before and reinstalled them like a couple other sites have suggested, but none of that has worked.

  27. @Ray @BB

Yeah that is what I was thinking most people had, and I would probably prefer the downloaded versions except they cost so much more. I am just really not sure why it keeps doing what it's doing though. I guess I will keep trying to figure it out somehow.

  28. @slicky
that sucks that Urbanspoon, did that. I voted again anyways. i got your friend request. Let me know when you’re up for gaming. Your menu looks great and makes me hungry. I see that there to Italian Beef Sandwiches or Beef Combos, available. Those would be good to have. if you haven’t had it and are ever in Chicago get one.

  29. @bsukenyan

There is an update for the game and it might not be updating the disc for some reason. Try downloading the free version and start that one to see if it updates. When it does update, exit out and start the disc version to see if the update carries over.

  30. @Sandrock

I tried that way too and I still am not getting the update…I'm about to call Microsoft simply because it is really annoying. They are just such a hassle to deal with and I am gonna have to try and remember how to actually get to a person again.
